  1. I am taking a break from looking for two items in my junkie, messy basement... I went through EVERY single box, garbage bag, nook and cranny - no luck. HA! It has to be in my hubby's junk - located in the garage - absolutely no hope there... I am so ADD - usually I get distracted and never make it through cleaning and organizing - I tried getting help from a friend once and boy was that a joke. She couldn't understand why I didn't just haul in a dumpster. I digress, today, I got lucky and sort of straightened out SOME stuff. I even threw out some! Believe me it was dead - nothing that would bring a tear to my eyes. Junk doesn't exactly calm me down - I get pretty darned excited! I even get excited about the old junk around here I mean to do something with one of these days.... sort of like the big box of old coffee pots I want to use for scare crow heads one of these days... Yeah, it was like Christmas. Hey, I found some stuff I meant to give for this Christmas... LOL Unfortunately, I have never mastered STORING, ORGANIZING AND SORTING my junk... My kids & grandkids are either going have a field day or haul in a dumpster when I die... I should leave little notes in it... LOL Maybe put little cool presents in the stuff... Nah they wouldn't know the difference... LOL Maybe when I die I need to include Junk Revolution in my will... anything the kids don't want could be fair game??? Oh dear I'm not that old and in reasonably good health... How morbid. We used to have a 50 X 100 ft pole barn back when we lived on the 5 acre utopia... We moved most of it in here... ARGH! Anyway, my question is: HOW DO YOU STORE, ORGANIZE, HIDE AND SORT JUNK??? Any helpful hints? Maybe this should be sort of like AA... Call a friend when it gets overwhelming? Hey it is always overwhelming to take care of junk - it's maybe why I'm here.... probably need therapy... Yikes, I'll probably end up like my Great Aunt Goldie... She just had little paths through her house. There was junk stacked every where else. Oh well, I have 30 more years to get like that I guess. I have projects to last at least 30 more years anyway... Never run out of things to do, eh?

Hello Copperhead: For me it's re-arranging my junk area which happens to be in small area of the garage (for summer work). I did let loose of some items. I put like items in my newly acquired homemade cabinet and in drawers under my work area. Lots of things hanging on the walls. I also have a small work area in my family room where I work in the winter months (usually only small items). There are times I run out of room (many, many, times). Then it's time to purge. I have good intentions when it comes to organizing-it looks good for awhile and then seems to go back to the messy side. Oh well can't have everything.

My daughter too has said she would just throw away all my so called "junk". She's an only child so no one to swade my way. Oh well by then I won't know it (or will I??).

Hope this helps. Remember--we're all alot alike here.

  3. Hi, I've got the opposite problem, I'm over organized. I swear if I ever need a second career it would be as a professional organizer.

I suggest taking small bites. Pick one area, a small area, and just do that one area. Have a pile for Donate, Sell, Keep, and Trash.
Make sure you have at least a few things end up in the Donate and Trash piles.

Then move on to another area.

When you've got all your keep stuff together, and all the "away" stuff is gone. then work on organizing the keep things in a way that works for you.

Remember go at it as you would eat an elephant...one bite at a time.

    Good luck

i guess i'm somewhere between anally organized to very attention deficit!!
i am great at getting my stuff together but then....i forget where the heck i put it! lol
golden illustrated example: bought husband a 10th anniversary card a few months prior because i just fell in love with it. thought a few weeks about exactly what i wanted to write in it, you know "special 10th anniversary, only comes once"
yeah....the day came, he handed me a card and all i could do is hand him some lame excuse of how i put it somewhere but forget where that is! you really would like it, too! :)
2 months have passed and i still cannot find it!!!!!

  6. OMG!!! That's ME...Well I'm glad I'm not alone...lol Or my daughter says "I told you this or that" and I know darn well she didn't, and think well is it a plot to make me think i'm nuts...She wouldn't be to far off...

  7. Wow - Margo - that is JUST what my son said to me - one bite at a time to eat that elephant! LOL! I am just retired and TRYING to get a handle on this cluttered (with GOOD junk I might add!!) house - but any antique dealer can tell you that it's harder than you think because you keep finding MORE good junk to add to your stash!

Leveta - read an old post of yours today - I lived for a few years in Manheim, PA - right across from Roots farmstand and auction - boy, the things I let pass me by at that auction! (before my antique dealer days)... Do you know if Groff's Farm Restaurant is still there in E'town?? Gosh, that food was fabulous! I still dream about Chicken Stoltsfus :-)

hope to contribute more soon and will round up some pics on projects - this area is too fun!

  8. Wanda didn't you just love Roots. I don't know if Groffs is there still or not. If I can think of it I will as my aunt next time she calls...

  9. Leveta - yes, Roots was so much fun! I do remember going back there maybe 10 yrs ago now, and it just wasn't as great as I remembered - I guess those first times just stay with you. But, now I live in NH (Matthew Mead country! Met him a couple of months ago at a local library talk!).. but still think about those wonderful antiquing areas around Reading and Adamstown and Renningers. "Thanks for the memories".. :-)

  11. Organization...a subject near & dear to my heart. When we moved to the farm several years ago, I gained a farmhouse twice the size of my prior home with outbuildings to boot. I also gained the ability to try to organize over 30 years of collecting. I sold stuff, recommitted stuff to new areas of the farm, and bought a lot of Rubbermade containers.

What works for me --- since I collect by season or holiday (and also tend to sell that way) is to have Rubbermades labeled as such in my basement. I have Rubbermades ready & eager to take my stash for resale (I price before it goes in those tubs) and Rubbermades for home. I also have two card tables in the middle of my basement for sorting, etc. I have a laundry room on first floor where everything goes until it makes it to the designated tubs. I also have a stall in my barn for larger items.

However...that is my current style. Now my wish: I have an entire room over our summer kitchen that we have not yet opened up. It is unheated with a window on one end...probably almost 800 square feel. I would like to put in a floor, shelving...and have OPEN STORAGE for my stuff with clear tubs so I can see everything. I could then take in a basket and "shop" my own room. Hmmm --sounds like a resolution for 2010....

  12. I, too, am reorganizing and re-storing my stash. For me, I find that the clear totes are the most useful for me. I put like items in the same tote if they'll fit and use a PTouch labeler to label them. Totes go on Rubbermaid shelves in my craft room. (I should probably buy stock in Rubbermaid or Sterilite!) If I can't see it I forget it. So, if I can at least see that there are a lot of rusty items in one tote and the label only lists a few rusty items, I'll still look in that tote for a particular rusty item assuming that I put the item I'm looking for in there.

I will also pull down a tote now and then because of what I can see and then rummage through it looking for inspiration. I just might get an idea of what to make just by looking at a bunch of junk stored in the same tote.

Now don't get me WRONG here - I am not as organized as I'd like to be, but I'm working on it. Always a work in progress, eh? When I'm working on a project, I like to have lots of junk spread out to choose from so I'm quite messy when I'm working. Can't help that and don't want to change that too much because I don't want to limit myself to too little junky inspiration. Does that make sense?

So, I'm reorganizing one section at a time in my craft room. Gotta get at it now...

i stand by the 3 or 4 bags and timer method if you're hard to get started, lacking time or just overwhelmed with stuff to get organized.

if you designate one area (drawer, closet, even 10 inches of counter space) set a timer for say 10 min...quickly go thru all the stuff and put it in one of the bags TRASH/KEEP/DONATE/SELL, then your things are much easier to put back away.

the biggest thing is to immediately put the bag in the trash can, take out to car to donate or pre-marked in a tub to sell at yard sale or something then you'll be less likely to bring it back in!!!

i can usually knock off several areas as i watch a movie, on the phone/computer, etc....cuz i multi-task and it makes me want to get done even quicker!! :)

  14. So....yesterday, I'm sorting and organizing in my basement---NOT my strong point and I keep thinking. "One bite at a time" "One bite at a time" slowly eating my elephant. My little gals played so nice upstairs, I kept checking on them (3 and 4 years). And kept ignoring the mess they were making. At one point I came upstairs after enjoying a few more bites of my elephant and realized ANOTHER ELEPHANT had sneaked in the back door and POOPED all over my upstairs!!! The little gals had gotten out every toy, little game, and puzzle. I don't think I got ahead.

My craft room is usually organized and in labeled bins on shelves but yesterday I was in a hurry to get projects done for vendors night at our store and when my DH saw the room he said it looked like a "Junk Bomb" went off (and he was right).

My shop is another story altogether-DH and I have a split shop and we are in the process of switching sides because I take up a lot more room than him and he had the larger side. Also painting and putting in work benches and all that good jazz in the process so it's a disaster right now.

  18. Can you post some pic's after you get it done??

    Posted 4 years ago #
  19. I will get my craft room organized right down to the nitty gritty. It will stay that way until I work on a project, then boom it will look like a tornado hit. I am such a messy worker. I really need to work on slowing down and taking care not to trash my office/craft room when I create.

I also use the tubs and label each. I TRY to make myself put away thrift store finds shortly after I get them home instead of just dumping them in my office. I have found just putting new junk away as soon as I bring it home helps me.

I will never be known as the most organized, My basement is my work area and I use every inch...well except for the laundry area, thats my hubby's! I have a million nails in the overhead rafters and hang tons of stuff. Also the really heavyduty shelves crammed full of my "stuff". Every now and then I will set the timer for 20 minutes and rush thru organizing and putting things away, I seem to get alot accomplished that way...
