  1. Has anyone heard of a spray that is made from silver nitrate(I think that's what it's called). It gives glass the look of mercury glass.

Leveta, try Krylon Looking Glass...use a few coats and it may replicate an antiqued mercury glass effect.
seems using just silver paint, leaves a flat appearance not the kind that the Krylon's gives.
as for silver nitrate...i'm sorry but i can't help.

  4. I didn't know this answer but glad that Brez & Gigi did. I found (by accident) that if you wash the old colored glass christmas balls. The color comes off and leaves you with a great mercury glass looking finish to the balls. Lucky accident!

I think Silver Nitrate is what they use to "silver" mirrors.

Let us know what you find out.

  5. Thanks you all. I didn't know kylon made such stuff. I just saw in CR where they took glass pumpkins and sprayed them with the SN and gave it a faux mer. look.

  7. Gigi I have to admit I come here first. I know if you all have done it then it's tried and tested. I'm a DUH head. I don't think most of the time of going to sites. On the samples from lowes and HD can you get them mixed? I think last yr I ask a guy in paint department about it and he said no. And the samples were like 5.00. How would you know if that's the color you want or like?

benjamin moore usually has their colors in true shades by each color group posted on their site.
i don't know about ordering the color thru there or if i even would....but great to look up ideas/colors/techniques on to make choices by.
i don't think lowes/hd do mix colors together like that, especially samples but they have a huge palette to choose from, the lighting in their stores makes it hard to get a real true feel for it tho (or at least for me....i'm like mrs magoo, tho...lol)
maybe try the "krylon looking glass" it's not terribly expensive and you may like it alot?! i'm just throwing other ideas out for you. that's why the ranger inks came to mind because you can mix those to your likings, at least all i've seen of them....but the glass application...i don't know anything about how it would take compared to tile, etc...due to the porosity of the material. ?????

well...i'm hoping the end result isn't too mirror-effect for you. it gives more of a shined silver/mirror look than a flat silvery appearance....maybe try on throw away objects first???

wondering what the result would be when sprayed over a few other color coats...of say purples, greens, etc???

hope i'm not leading you astray, leveta.....maybe look up the krylon website under looking glass and see if that's what you may need/want

leveta, really take a look at the site brezlin posted above....i just ran across it and was about to post when double checking what one she listed...same one!! it gives play by play and adds silver leaf adhesive and sheets as a step to making faux mercury....another site gave antiqued gold leaf as another alternative to silver leaf. they show painting inside and out, too!!! sounds like work but pretty impressive stuff!!
