    bubble tape
    duct tape (so many uses)
extra set of car keys (too many times have I needed these!)

    I would want to add:

    Rope
    Camera
Water and small snacks (don't want to have to stop to eat)
GPS (hopefully Santa will bring me one)
Extra clothes (just in case you find an old barn, attic or basement to look through)

  5. ooh very good addtions! how could I forget my clothes (hasn't happened since college!) and hand sanitizer! storage tubs is a great idea!

  6. Usually it's all just a big bag of toys, extra clothes, snacks, etc. for my kids. All those other things I just wing. But I agree, it would be handy to actually have tools, blankets, etc.

I went to a flea market and I noticed a lot of the buyers were wearing those white cotton gloves.. I think they did not want to touch everything that everyone else has touched.. not a bad idea.. and the gloves are not very expensive and can be washed after each trip and always keep some in your glove box.. never know when a good find will come along.. with the flu going around like it is.. makes sense to take care of yourself..

I love the car keys idea. After looking an hour to find my cell phone, I recommend leaving it IN the car. Drop cloth/plastic are good to have to protect the other stuff in your car.
A tape measure could come in handy. You can call home and have one measure that potential spot.

For me, it's duct tape, ink pen, paper towels, small shovel, bucket, sunglasses, handy double bit screwdriver, magnet, and rope, but come to think of it, that's not my junking stuff, that's just my never leave home without. This stuff never leaves the jeep, I have however at times, left the spare tire home, but never the survival kit!

some old guy always comes to our garage sales with magnet in tow...to check silver...i'm assuming who ever posted that does the same??

    Posted 11 months ago #
  13. I've seen that but never really gave it a lot of thought. If the magnet sticks--it is or isn't silver? (color me dumb!)

    Posted 11 months ago #
  14. LOL....I basically know that it is for checking metal, but like Jill, I want to know what it tells you. I've heard something before, but as seeing how I'm an old junktastic....I forgot.......

    Posted 11 months ago #
  15. Well, somebody cleaned that up....I didn't say junktastic....can't get by with anything on here......LOL LOL LOL

When scrape metal was selling high, we'd scrape metals when hubby was laid off, got more money if the metals were separated into different piles, I also use the magnet when I'm wanting to know if the treasure is truly brass.

This is for the question on magnets:

Magnets attract only 4 metals: iron, cobalt, nickel and steel (which consists mainly of iron). That means, you've got one of these if your magnet sticks.

    blankets
    bungees
    Flashlight
    REFLEXES OF A CAT
    RETRIEVAL SPEED OF A LABRADOR

    For me it's:
Thick gloves with leather on palm side, multi tip screw driver, hammer, handsanitizer, small and medium size stick for dumpster diving, water! small boxes for putting things in, sign in rear windshied that says, " I stop for all curbside trash ", coins in case I have to stop at a meder, power invertor that allows you to plug small household appliances into it.You plug it into your cigarette lighter, work boot type shoes, map, old blankets, garbage and grocery bags, bungee cords, tape measure, flash light for night.

i did come up with something while i was in the hospital. how many people with high profile high demanding and hi-stress jobs would get so much relaxtion if introduced to the junking would. i know it calms me down when things get rough. did anyone see the lampshade covers in the country home made out of old sweaters i just got all cozy looking at them.

but then the way the weather any sweater looks cozy and they sure dont want to cut it up right now they want to wear it no matter how old or makbe ugly......just a note and thought i would share

  23. I'm OCD, so THE most important thing in my "kit" is hand sanitizer and wipes! My dear MIL can't believe that as much as I fear germs - I love to rummage through someone else's junk! I can't really explain, but you gals might understand - I just love the FEEL of some of this junk we collect. I mean, sometimes it really has a calming affect on me. Anyone else get that?

Sue--yes I do get it. This is about the only place I can talk junk and not get the raised eyebrow! Especially the ladies at work--as I've said before they "don't get me". I love it here. I can talk, talk, talk and be understood. I do have 1 friend who thinks like us so that helps too. It is definetly calming going through the aisles at the flea market and combing over other people junk and feel good about it. Sorry for rambing-been cooped up too long in this house with an injured JH.

  25. So glad I found you all! Sue, I'm truly OCD also. I don't so much fear germs, but I have other issues. But I can totally relate that old stuff just calms me down. It's been around, it's steady and has proven itself. I get emotionally attatched to old things, especially houses. I see them for not only the objects that they are, but as the creation of a person and a way of life that is gone. I remember when I was in the fifth grade I cried when my mother painted the old woodwork that was in her bedroom. She only did it because most of the other woodwork in that room was already painted and she wanted it to match, but I was so upset!

Oh, and as far as my junk kit, I never think that far ahead. All I need is a cleared out cargo hold and some money in my pocket!

  29. I did not read this topic the first time it went around - love the county map idea. Saw someone posted GPS, too. I went and bought a GPS just to go to Bonanza (but have used it tons since). I knew that I would be pulling a trailer and did want to rely on my google maps print out! I wanted that nice GPS voice to guide me right to my destination.

I dont know if anyone mentioned it above but I also nolonger go anywhere without my flea market cart. My junking friends and I used to laugh a people who used those, but I finally broke down and bought one a few years back and love it. I plan to make a little sign promoting my business to hang on it - hopefully I will get it done by the first FM in the spring.

And, welcome Nindoll and Stephanie! This is a fun place to be!!!

  31. We bought close to 200 old windows that had been stored for years in a barn. We took a hoe (in case of snakes) and bee spray. Never did see any living creatures, but as we carried out the windows, we saw lots of mice nests and snake skins.
