  1. I usually don't buy too many furniture pieces, but when I walked into the thrift store last week and saw this cabinet I couldn't pass it up. Now, this is the store that usually has higher prices. I almost didn't even bother looking. It drew me in and I had to go take a look. The tag said $25 "as is." Hmmmm....Okay, so it is missing the two doors. The toile "curtain" is nice, though. Also gone is the "floor" in the upper left side and a knob on the bottom drawer. I decided it was still worth $25, paid for it and called my husband to come help me haul it home.

Here is my plan: Cut a board for the floor. Cover the board with some old sheet music instead of worrying about matching the stain. Remove both knobs from the top drawer and use on in the bottom drawer. Use some old lace threaded through the wholes as a "pull" for the top drawer. Take it to my booth and make a profit!

What do you think? Did I pay a fair price? I know some would paint it, but I really do like the beauty of the wood. It is in good shape with no scuffs or scratches. Is it okay to just leave the upper left side open? I think it will make a nice display area.

Sorry this post is so long. I really should have made two posts. Oh, well. The next piece (pics are probably switched around) is just an old wooden shelf. I paid $5 for it at a local junk store. You can see that most of the paint is worn off. Am I crazy to like it that way? I really think I am going to leave it "as is" for now. I'll put it in my booth with a fall display. If it doesn't sell I may bring it back home and paint it a pretty robin's egg blue.

I would love to hear your ideas on these two pieces! Thanks!

I like the piece very much, the wood has a warm tone. I would like to see it without the curtain. could it be used as a wardrobe or does it has shelving?

  3. Tricia, there is a bar inside for hanging clothes.

I really think you did well. I like your ideas for the wardrobe-- replacing the shelf and lining it with old piano music. I think you could probably make more $ if you did paint it, but if the wood is in as good a condition as it looks to be in the picture, why bother? I do think different drawer pulls would add to its value. Oh, I love the black toile curtain.

The shelf is a great deal for five dollars! I love the graduated size of each shelf and the enclosed bottom shelf. Again, I think you could make a better profit if you.......drum roll.....paint it.

All in all, money well spent!!!!

  5. Vanessa, I think you got a good deal on both pieces. I like them both. Since the wood is in good shape on the wardrobe, I'd leave it like it is. I might paint the shelf.

Vanessa, I think you did great.. and what a great hubby to come and help you haul it home... What I think is so great about Junkers, is that they see what things were and how they can again be something of beauty... what an awesome find.. and the wood is just so nice.. and warm , even if you painted it .. it would look great.. not sure if I would paint it.. but what the heck..you bought it for you and you fix it the way you want it.. unless you plan on selling it then I would not paint it.. yeppers you did good and have a good eye to see what can be done with something that has good bones..

  8. What a score!
I would do the improvements you sugested and try to sell without painting first. Some people love wood and a more rustic feel. Then if the pieces didn't sell, I'd paint. But don't forget to factor in the cost of paint and your time. Good luck!

Love them both!! I am more on the primitive side so I would not paint the shelf, but again that's just me. The chiffarobe was well worth the $25.00 you paid. Great deals on both!!!

Wow! You did great! If it were me, I would paint the wardrobe a creamy white and put glass drawer pulls on and your idea for the sheet music on the shelf. The Shelf on the other hand will appeal to primitive lovers in a HUGE way! I wouldn't touch that! Good luck!

Beautiful "bones" and a creative way to make it even better! I agree with somebody else- don't paint it unless it doesn't sell right away - then do it.

  12. I can't believe that the wardrobe was at A.R. for that price! Wow...what a bargain! I wouldn't paint it just yet and put in the booth with the natural wood color. Let the new owner paint it! Some folks do like the natural wood color and you know some of the shoppers just "don't get it" around here either. I love the odd size shelf too. You did very good! BTW your booth is so cute right now! I purchased a couple of items on Saturday from you. Jan

  13. Jan, I knew you would be surprised by that price. I sure was! That is why I keep going to that store. Some days I do find some deals. I'm heading in to work on my booth right after supper. I'll have to see if I can figure out what you bought!

Both are beautiful..I think I would have bought them also!
I like the natural wood color. You can always see how it works "natural" and then paint it later.
