I must be a stick in the mud. Non-techno to say the least. The facebook and myspace thing weirds me out.
Ann--my feelings are similar to the ones you shared of "thinking you knew folks and then reading things that perhaps aren't meant for you to eyes." It IS kind of "Brave New World-ian"-- with a dash of Orwell-ian "1984".
It is like an on-line diary...only mine had a lock and key that I guarded with my life!
Being that I love depth of the soul, I can only attribute my aversion to this baring of beauty, sorrow, passion, etc to the fact that it is not a secret-- but made plain for oodles of on-liners.
Told you I was a killjoy!

Greta I know! I still can't "post on my wall" what would I say that I want the whole world to see?! My blog is different--cohesive--my nephews/nieces/random people you could be "friends" with don't care and would never read it. But facebook, they would see eveything. Weird.

Hey girls. Im on there too. Im under Lisa Peters or my email address is mpdpopo3@yahoo.com. Feel free to add me too!! :)

Greta, I know exactly what you mean about the Facebook/MySpace thing. I think a lot of folks forget about the fact that their not just chatting with close friends, it's out there for the world to see. I read about a couple of businesses that want to know what's on your Facebook/Myspace pages before they hire you. I think that's totally wrong but it's becoming important to some places to avoid future embarassment.

Linda,
Colleges are also taking an interest in students' Facebook/Myspace entries. Academic competition for scholarships is tough, and so colleges are resorting to factoring into their decision-process the merit of an applicant's character as demonstrated by the student's internet blog activity. Could be a great plus or very detrimental.

I'm on facebook too. Christy Herrell Sudderth--I'd love to have some of my junking buddies as friends. It is a new world and I don't always like it but there is some good in it too. You learn so much more about people (some I would just as soon not know). I commented to one friend that I felt like a peeping tom when I read some of her posts! Course, you can always hide posts from people if you want to.

Anne of Greenoak: I enjoy reading your Green Oak Shop Talk. Even though I don't have a business like yours, its quite an insight into the business world today. A local antique store is closing up shop. Sales were slow, so they came up with the idea to set up a room and sell wine or margaritas, but the city council denied their liquor liscence, too many in the small town already. They said, rather bitterly in the newspaper article that people loved bringing their friends and relatives and spending hours browsing and then leave buying little or nothing. They have booths in two large urban cities, sell on E bay, but its tough out there. Face book? it will be interesting to see how that works for you.

im on facebook mainly for fun..so far...
.glad you like the blog...i love blogging....unfortunatley our store has to supply our only incomes and our 2 house payments.dh andi have an expensive cottage...and our sons income and house..he has 4 kids......so its pretty serious all the time..and a lot of pressure..... its doing ok....even tho kind of scary in this economy...we definitely had to give up on being the good old antique store we used to be... now we are a vintage indy kind of lifestyle store... with a great customer base...
its always interesting... thats why i like it i guess...

I see both sides of the topic here. I'm on facebook, but am very conscious of what I write and make sure not to bare my soul. I chastized my sister the other day for putting on there that she was at a race instead of at a cousins wedding. Did she not understand that they would see that and be hurt?
But then the plus side of facebook is that we aren't a letter writing society anymore, I miss keeping up with old friends and family that live far away... (but claim I am too lazy or don't have the time to write a letter) so when they update their status to "I'm having a nervous breakdown" I know they are feeling the same way I do, or then I know to reach out and give them a little note to say I'm thinking of them.
It's kinda like a little support group. I feel it's the same thing as blogging. But then again, I'm selective with who I'm friends with. Just because we went to the same school doesn't make us friends... some people befriend anyone and everyone... that's not for me.Posted 3 years ago # -
