Visited my favorite consignment store today and had my suspicions confirmed. The prices of the items at this store have taken a drastic leap over the summer.

What originally drew me to this store? Slightly higher than yard sale pricing on most items...sans ultra antiquities. Now, the prices are climbing higher for "lesser" items. Our antique mall items are priced more reasonably.

I will stop lamenting. I did buy a few reasonable items. Also found some this past weekend... at a local flea market.

Found: Primitive angel picture/ cottage-style floral portrait---I painted frame white/ chandelier I painted black (looking for 25 watt faux wax bulbs), oak shelf with silver racks/ vintage biscuit canisters with wooden tops/French soap dispenser and tumbler/three tin and glass door knob hangers/ pair of green embroidered pillow cases/ green embroidered dresser set/beautiful crystal bowl with silverplate rim/ plastic Indian corn, gourds, and pumpkins/white mail organizer with drawer/primitive bumble bee rag doll with dress and tulle wings.

Finding items that you think (no way to be sure in this business) will sell has become very gratifying. I think I've been bit by the "thrill of the hunt" bug.

I resisted buying half a dozen items that were wonderful but left me very little room for any profit margin. Rats!

Learning the ins and outs of the resale business is somewhat challenging. It is also interesting and even enjoyable...as long as I stay in the black! ; )

  4. Greta-

I have noticed the same thing at our thrift store. Terrible jump in prices. Now, it's like they know it could be worth something so they mark it up and I can't buy it because I won't make a profit.

I am really discouraged by it... it's getting harder and harder to turn a profit on some things nowadays....

Prices seem to be jumping by leaps and bounds where I live as well. I had 2 booths and closed one already due to slow sales and restocking costs and will probably close the other soon.

  6. I found these treasures today in a mall in town and all for $ 24.00 which wasn't too bad. I got a child's ice cream chair, kitchen scales, ceramic frog, bag buttons, bakelite dress buckles, porcelain door knobs, enamel candleholder, child's baby shoe and 2 staple guns with staples which was the bargain of the day since it was 50 cents! We have one thrift store that really runs their prices up so I rarely go in there...the other one has good bargains. The mall I hit today has a couple of vendors with really great prices. The only thing I am keeping is the staple gun stuff...the rest will be on Etsy. Jan

  9. Thanks! The $ 24.00 was the total for everything pictured....the chair was grossly underpriced so I snagged it quickly! I hit this one particular mall a couple of times each month and the vendors are always bringing in new items to their booths with super reasonable prices. I got both staple guns and box of staples for 50 cents which was a big bargain...I can't ever seem to find our staple gun when I need it...now I have 2 others to also misplace! Jan

  10. Oh - I love love that scale!!!!!!!!!!!! Both you and Greta seem to have found ALL of the good stuff!!! My thrift stores around here are competing with Macys or Neiman Marcus I think....

  11. Just come on over my way and we'll junk...that is if you can stand the heat and humidity! We have one overpriced thrift store where the manager stays in the back looking the stuff up in outdated reference books....my theory is the stuff was all donated so just price it and move it! The other thrift store is really reasonable! Jan

  12. This was sold on etsy...it's a primitive rusty wire pumpkin...and it sold already. Great idea for making NOW!

I am working on fall items for my booth. The two wreaths I made I pieced together from floral items I had. The other items came from a flea market.

It seems that many of us are encountering consignment store price inflation. What confounds me is that my consignment store advertises by asking the public: "Why go through the hassle of a yard sale? Let us do the work for you."

Not only are the prices no longer able to compete with yard sales, but in an economic recession, how do they expect to keep customers when their prices are now comparable with retail and specialty shops?

I have never attended an auction...outside of livestock auctions...but hear it is the cheapest means of finding items...outside of yard sales.

  20. So my husband and I once again went to the steam and gas show flea market. You should have seen us leaving:
We took the vintage 3 wheel bike, loaded a antique box at the back, {full of treasures like other little boxes, wood handled graters} then set a huge railroad box on that, full of iron grates, galvanized tall bucket, full of fire pails, and minnow bucket, then a huge floor grate with wood trim slide into that, snow shoes were stashed in the back tall ways, along with some old rubber boots, then over the seat was a shabby stool, with a huge bag of assorted feed bags strapped to that, then an old wooden bird cage on top of that. Buggy cords secured and away we went looking like a peddlers wagon! My husband is so good, he pushed it out to the van. I smiled all the way as others looked on with envy!....Or was it looks of,"Who are those hillbillies?"
I bought 15 feed bags from Friend Kirby and 24 feedbag from another vendor.....guess I am stocked!

  24. I was naughty and went out to a flea market type sale at someone's house. They go remove the remnants of other people's garage sales and usually have some great junk priced really cheap! I nearly fell over when I found the antique Royal Typewriter with all of its glass keys still intact. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the bright pink tag that read $2.00. Are you KIDDING ME? I put on my best poker face, nonchalantly picked the heavy sucker up, and placed in my "pile" area without skipping a beat. I said I hoped that it worked, been wanting one, etc - when inside I was SCREAMING!

Also found a wooden letter J, a brass # 7 each for .50, lots of .25 items, an aqua insulator for $1, a vintage wooden drawer with lots of crackly pain (they had no idea how in THAT was) filled with jars and boxes of nails, screws, vintage glass knobs, brass handled door set from about 1950 still in the box - the whole drawer for .50. I found a cool flashlight/screwdriver in a leather pouch also for $1 - very vintage and never used. My new best friend I'm sure! Oh, BTW, the vintage square wood folding table was a steal at $1.

  28. $2.00 for the typewriter!!!!???
    You RAT!
I love the J the 7 and the spool...very good treasures!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  29. Yes, gals, it WAS fun and a pretty nice haul if I do say so myself.

Christine - I'm not quite sure what I'll do. I've seen (and someone on here told me about this) putting a sheet of old or yellowed paper in it with a neat message typed out. I like that idea, but don't know where I'd put it. I thought about parting it out - the keys would probably fetch upwards of $50 on Ebay.

Lisa - Can you BELIEVE IT? $2.00????? They had NO idea what they had.

I AM open to suggestions on the typewriter - I have another one at a consignment shop right now, not nearly as old as this one though....

Greta, your wreaths are gorgeous. And Sue that is the coolest pile of junque and awesome prices. I love sales like that where people are just trying to get rid of stuff and price it accordingly. Good job keeping your composure over the $2.00 price tag.:)

Sue-- That kind of booty in broad daylight! INVITED inside a home instead of stalking its cast-offs from the curb?? Those kind of goodies for almost ...well..nothing? With those incredible finds you are upgrading from MIDNIGHT to MID-DAY MARAUDER! Very impressive!

    Lorene--I love the bracelet!

Hope these pictures load. I found this mobile light base (the bulb gives off heat and moves the shade...cast pictures on nursery walls) sans the shade. I was at a yard sale and someone--who is obviously not a member of this website--had "trashed" it because it was broken. (Nothing is ever really broken, is it??)

I politely lifted it out of the trash, asked about its status, and offered to pay for it. The wonderful lady gave it to me!

I bought the rooster fabric and fringe today and it became this evening's project.

  35. Lorene - have you removed keys before? I've only done it once and the keys popped right off. I understand that these have to be cut from the really old models - do you know if that is right? I'll have to surf the web for that perhaps.

Greta - that lamp looks wonderful! I'm like you - is there really anything beyond OUR repair or imagination? I guess that's one reason we see something different when we see junk.

  36. Oh, BTW, while at the home flea market the other day, I found these wonderfully aged pool balls. My arms were full and I forgot to go back to that table and grab the box so I left the sale without them. Later that evening (Sun) I sadly recalled that I hadn't gone back to pick the box up to purchase.

So....yesterday I got the nerve to drive back to the sale to see if the tables were still out. As I was pulling into the very long driveway, the homeowner was pulling out. I kindly mentioned the box of pool table items that I had forgotten to pick up the day before. He helped me pull the tarps back from a couple of tables and we found them. I handed him a dollar for the .75 box. He wanted to give me change back!? I said, no, please keep the change and let him know how grateful I was to be able to come back and make the purchase.

My idea was to put the balls into some of my crib springs...as you can see...and dress them up a bit with number embellishments that coincide with the number on the ball. Ideally I would rather put them atop a regular mattress spring, but this is all I've got for now. Any ideas for embellishing these guys?

    Thanks!
    Sue

Sue I bet some pool enthusiest(sp) will love those....

  39. Sue - I think they would also be cute applied to some boxy piece of furniture (cube style table)as legs to give it new dimensions. Also I saw a picture in a magazine where they were placed around a potted plant. Another cool look! They have so many possibilities! I had 3 sets and sold 2 but can't locate the 3rd one....lol ! I am sure it will show up later. Enjoy and thanks for posting the pics!

Sue--Love the pool balls on the bed springs! I also love Jan's idea for the cue-style legs with ball feet. Wouldn't cue chalk be funky placed somewhere, too?

Another incredible story of one woman's determination and ingenuity and how sweet people can be. You sound like such a fun and funny person! My type of gal.

Jan and Leveta and Sue-- Thanks for the compliments!!! I really like covering lamp shades with fabric and this project was so easy!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  42. Sue - some of the typewriters I've used the keys just pop right off and some you have to use the rotozip to cut them off. Well worth the time and effort (and bloody knuckles) to get them off. They sure don't make things like they used to.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  43. Greta what did you use to afix the fab. with???

    Posted 3 years ago #
  44. Sue, I love billiard balls too--that was a steal!! If you put them on those springs I think I would snip off the extra wire at the top so it doesn't spiral around the ball. People use these in assemblages--heads, feet, etc.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  45. Jill - thanks, I was thinking precisely that - removing the extra ring around the top. I was working on that yesterday - frugal me - trying to unwrap the wire instead of snipping it. I'll go all out and cut the dang thing today! And, YES, I thought $1 was not to shabby either!

Oh, what great finds! I love the rooster lamp, icecream chair, and billiard balls! So many goodies...I'm wanting to go shopping now!

I know I'm thinking two seasons ahead...have you thought about using the "J" for Christmas? It would be wonderful as part of a "Joy" decoration...

And just an off thought on the balls ... maybe a shadow box or small rack next the the front door using the balls as the house number.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  52. Thanks for the ideas, Josie! I'm planning to use the J for Joy or Junk, not sure which yet.

Great idea for the billiards balls! I'll have to see what I can come up with...

Greta, that is a wonderful transformation of the lamp. Love the roosters and the little finials look like eggs, so nice.

Sue,The billiard ball/bed spring combo is a winner. I happen to have a full set of 1960's billiard balls, nicely yellowed and a crackly finish. However they belong to the 1960's pool table in our game room and for some reason I get the feeling DH would take a stand against my using them for a "project" LOL

you know speaking of pool balls, have any of you ever watch the Frazier show where his coffee table looks like it has Bowling balls for legs.. often wondered if you could take four bowling balls or even eight and glue them together useing two for each leg and then add a table top.. I bet it would look neat.. oh well time to get to work.. and stop my junk thinking and get in the car mode.. LOL

Bought this former brass chandelier at our local Route 60 yard sale. I originally painted it black but then decided on this green shade. I made the berry garland, affixed some prisms and am taking it to my booth this afternoon.

Am I the only one who prices items kinda high--thinking in the back of my mind if they don't sell...I will use them at my house??????

Not very business-minded philosophy...but I put a lot of love into that chandelier! hee hee

    Robelyn,

I love your take on the value of glue guns. I have three. One is black... I call him Colt 45! The other two are white...my twin shooters! Let me know when you learn to finger-twirl yours (without burning yourself!); )

Guess they had been stashed away for quite some time so now they will head to Etsy in the next couple of weeks. Nothing is staying...all needs new homes! I have all my tubs labeled and stack in the front wall of the garage and a large shelf with a chain above them to hold my packing supplies. Since closing the booth I plan to stay organized now! We managed to sell 4 of them yesterday so they don't have to move here to reside with all the other mess. It just feels so good to be out of the booth and working from home now...no regrets! I have even joined a fitness place and work out 5 to 6 days a week now. Life is good ! I am planning on visiting Maggie & Margo this fall and spend the day junking with them. Maggie lives about 1 hour from me and Margo is about 2 hours at the most from here. Have fun with your organizing tomorrow! Jan

Actually after I threw my hissie fit this morning I sailed right along with sorting. He didn't throw one thing away and I am still sorting through it. Stopped at WM on the way home from lunch and purchased 4 more 18 gal. tubs to store stuff. hee hee! I think mine needs to head to the woods and kill something...we just had a doe across the street with her little spotted twin fawns (yes we live in the middle of town) but they are safe...no discharge of firearms in the city limits! Hurry hunting season for him! Actually he is taking me to Canton, TX the end of Oct. for my birthday this year...fun! Guess I can put my tomohawk up for the time being....! Jan

Greta, I just bought a chandy at a garage sale yesterday-$5!! Question--do you still have it wired? are you thinking someone will wire it into their house? Is that what you'll do if you keep it?
I love them but really not many places to put them for most people if wired. Is anyone redoing them so they are just a decorative piece and if so how are you showing to display it? Sorry for all the questions gals but please chime in!

Jill-- Great buy...five dollars! Would love to see before and after pictures!

Yes, my chandelier came with wiring. The wiring seemed relatively new...definitely not old or threatening. I really LOVED the way it looked on my front porch for the picture we took.

If it does not sell (asking 40.00) I will buy new chain that makes it long enough to hang where it was in the picture, paint the chain to match the green color, and use it --without wiring it--on the porch. I can take out the bulbs and use candles.

Wiring it is a possibility. Yes, I expect someone to use it in this manner. We have changed-out lots of lights. I just don't want to make a hole in my porch ceiling where no hole exists.

Also, I could buy a swag lighting kit, drape it and use the plug on the front porch. That's an option, too.

I really love light fixtures. I have a really nice mini-chandy that I purchased this summer at a yard sale for ten dollars. I want to paint it black and hang it in my bedroom. It is wired as a swag light so no extra holes in my ceiling.

The resizing feature makes this banner appear distorted and a tad bit short and chubby I finished the banner last night. Bought the fabric at a wonderful fabric store in Polmeroy, Ohio while on a shopping outing with a friend. Used glitter glue on it. I think I overdid it a bit with the glitter! I hung it in my booth this afternoon.

Leveta, I have been on an absolute working jag lately. I am going to frame my postcards and then...take a break for perhaps a week. My booth is spilling-over with items. I did my weekly rearranging and my autumn theme is coming along nicely. Time for a break.

  75. I hit an estate sale with a friend about 1 1/2 hours after it opened (can't stand the push/shove event) and found some neat treasures. Wonderful double vintage frame, embroidered pillowcases, blue wicker sewing box, 3 vintage hat stretchers, pair of ornate plaster frames and a glass jewelry casket. All of this is heading to my Etsy store...nothing stays here! I thought of using the hat stretchers for frames but really don't need them. Also picked up some small vintage sterling charms and an old hair comb. Tomorrow is 1/2 price at 1:00 and the storage building is still full of neat treasures but my garage can't stand anything else. Lots of wooden legs from old tables, ornate pieces of frames, bags of old metal do-dad embellishments, porcelain light fixture bases and lots more. Jan

Linda--You are a hoot! I will try your technique for working jags the next time I have one!!

Jan--Love estate sales...but, like you, not the opening hours! I actually like the last day...great deals! That blue sewing box is gorgeous.

I also love the two small ornate frames and that ornate jewelry casket.

    You did great!

I was out and about today...hit yard sales. Found some goodies for great prices!!!!!

DEAL OF THE DAY: baker's rack for ten dollars!! It's already in my booth. ha ha

What great treasures. Love the blue sewing box-I've seen these before but yours is in great shape. JH went to an ES today while I was with the daughter wedding shopping. He picked up a sauerkraut cutter, drying rack (that hangs on the wall) and 2 great hat stretchers--all for $5.00!!!. Think I may put a piece of glass on the sauerkraut cutter to make a table or add handles to the sides to make a tray. Not sure what to do with the rest. Let us know what you do with your treasures!! LuAnn

  79. I had a friend tell me the hat stretchers would make great frames. They are heavy and I think way cool ! Those little ornate frames are really a shabby mustard yellow and rather heavy...like plaster. The vintage jewelry casket box is my favorite find of the day. I could have bought a ton of cool stuff in the old storage building but I kept thinking about all the mess in the garage that is in tubs. The mosquitos ran me in from the garage...down here they have teeth! All of today's finds will be on Etsy next week! I am so out of room around here and I still want to go to Canton in Oct. so stuff needs to roll on!
Greta - You should do well selling the baker's rack. I sold both of mine last week that I had used for display.
LuAnn - post a pic of the kraut cutter when you finish it...I had never thought of using one for a table...cool idea! The wall drying rack is a great find too! Let me know what you do with your hat stretchers...Ebay & Etsy both have them priced from $ 45 to $ 75

Jan: I'll post pics of the kraut cutter as soon as I find a place to cut me a piece of glass to fit. As for the hat stretcher--OMG didn't think they could fetch such a price but they are way cool and don't think I want to part with them at the moment. I have alot of projects in the works right now and need to find timeto finish altough with this yucky weather here right now may find an hour or two. Will post finished projects soon. Well off to wedding shopping. Talk soon everyone. LuAnn

    Posted 3 years ago #
  81. I also love the idea of a tray with the kraut cutter! I still think the hat stretchers would be cool for frames or even as some sort of tray and find some neat metal handles for the ends. Just a thought! I hope someone will think of that when I put them in my Etsy store next week! I am looking forward to seeing your pics! Have fun wedding shopping! Jan

  82. I found these at the Restore. The lady at the Restore told me they probably once belonged to sconces but I don't think so. They just look like cloches to me. The ones with the acorn design I found on Etsy for 14 dollars just for one. The other two that match are my favorites. They have very dainty flowers carved into them. I paid fifty cents apiece for all six of them. I really don't have plans for them. I just wanted them. hehe...

  83. I think those had rubber gasket type adaptors at one time on the end to help hold them in sconces. (Home Interior made them along with other companies) I have bought them in the past and discarded the rubber gasket thing and used them as cloches myself. I kept a basket full of them when I had my booth and sold them. Great find! Jan

  85. Yep...that's them! I always discard them and tie some fluffy seam binding on the tip and use them as a cloche. They are great for small displays too and the etching just enhances them. I just donated about 12 or so to the thrift store when I closed my booth last Tuesday. I am sure they will find their way back to the mall since all the vendors shop there! Jan

Diane--Great cloches!! The junkers on here have demonstrated so much talent for making them beautiful...I have only seen cloches displayed in one particular antiques store I used to frequently visit. Her were delicate and intricate, too.

Here is one of my latest treasures. I have been admiring this picture for some time. A lady in our mall carries quite a lot of vintage pictures of children. To my absolute consternation, my husband and offspring are teasing me about my purchase. They don't like the child's breeches, collared shirt, or the rabbit's lengthy eyelashes.

So, I ignored their snickers and guffaws and hung it anyway. Put a picture light over it and...wha la. It isn't exactly Louvre quality, but in all honesty, I never have been to crazy about the "Mona Lisa" or the "Whistler's Mother".

  98. Greta, it's a beautiful picture. Maybe you could change it out one day and see if your family even notices--like with a the dogs playing poker print. (Just kidding!)
When you resize the picture there may be an option like constrain proportions or something like that that you can choose to keep the picture from distorting.

I thought of buying more cards last night, but wanted to post the cat first to see if anyone especially liked it. I'm glad to receive such positive comments.

I am also thinking of buying a black cat pinata at Wal Mart and adding personal touches to it. It is big/back arched...totally vintage looking. Only $10.00!!! **** I would welcome any ideas you have.*** It has eyes but lacks a nose and mouth.

    Robelyn,

I would love for you to use the idea!!! I ended up taking its paper eyes off last night. I spray painted it with a gloss black...to make it look less "pinata". Tonight, I am going to collect some materials I need, and give it a classic face...with wire whiskers! I will take a pic after it is finished.

I bet you can come up with great creative ideas. I have an orange collar I may use on it. Glitzy. I may buy another cat one depending if this one sells. Having fun with it! Hope you do, too.

Huggy, You are so ahead of me! I keep thinking I need to look for Christmas items...I did find some this summer...but autumn has grabbed most of my attention. Great finds! It is very interesting to see what you win ...for wonderful prices...at auctions!

Blossom Lane, I picked up the planters and the birdbath last night and oh yea... 'THE FROG' he is huge.. and he is just so cute.. I am going to take him to Lev's shop and I do not think she will have any trouble selling him.. and making a nice profit. the birdbath is nice also.. the planters need a little TLC but they will work.. I am trying to figure out how to make a hat for the NUTCRACKER that I won.. he is 30" tall and in very good shape. but missing his hat. all the ornies are in great shape and bright colors.. and the wreath is too.. so I just may add a new bow and some off the ornies to it.. and take it to Lev's too.. I won this shelf that the top comes up and you can add a book to it.. so I am taking that to Lev too, as I think it would be neat for her to place an address book on it and maybe her customers can sign in and she could have a use the names and address to have a raffel and put all the names in the hat and draw someone out to win.. also gives her a good customer information base.. she can keep track of what they buy and what they are interested in.. the rest of the shelf has three other shelfs and she can place some of her items on the shelf.. for display ..I went to a Krogers yesterday to pick up some fruit and they have these huge pumpkins sitting outside and they are asking $59.00 for each one.. funnly thing about them .. they are flat on one side.. LOL I would not spend $59.00 for one.. but who knows who would.. people fool ya..
And by the way.. we have chili at my house all the time.. Big Chile country here... you know with the Cincinnati style chile and the chile coneys.. and three ways.. LOL

  131. OMG! For $59 us crafty people could entertain ourselves for months!

I just got back from Sally's. I scored a creamed color microfiber pillow. When I opened the zipper it said Pottery Barn w/ a down filler. $3.99. Then I found 8 square vintage doilies w/ lovely flowers. Could sew together to make shabby chic/romantic pillow covers. $4.99. Best of all, I found a red/white checked with bows vintage tablecloth in excellent condition. But it had no tags. There is a huge sign above the register that says they will not sell anything w/out a tag and don't even ask. I let the girl figure out that there was not tag and tried to look surpised. Then she said "how about $1.99?". SCORE! I must have about 30 vintage tableclothes. I don't know why I love them but I do. Gravy stains and all. (hint...hot water, two scoops of OxiClean, let soak overnight and hang in the sun. Stains gone!). I once picked up a beautiful vintage 50's tablecloth at a tag sale. I was walking around wondering who could smell that bad. Then I realized it was me. That tablecloth was in the garage and had critter pee on it. Still paid .50 and soaked it and it's as good as new!

Lev, Sorry to hear about your GS.. My son use to get that and we would rush him to hospital and it was a spatic Colon... or something like that... he finally out grew it.. Now my grandson has the same thing.. or something like it.. scares you to death.. when kids get in so much pain... I was thinking about you earlier today Lev.. have you ever tried to dry Cat tails? I can remember picking some one year and spraying them good with HairSpray and they lasted for several years.. until dog we had at the time got ahold of them.. but they looked really nice and could use in flower arrangements.. we have so many up in this area.. need to get me some more and try it again.. Well my guys are all working on son's truck and watching football, so I made four pizza for them to eat ... made the dough and sauce yesterday and put all together today.. will pop in oven when they give me the word.. The least I can do.. they are saving my son over $250.00 dollars or more.. putting on a new fuel pump.. And it has rained all day so far here.. just stopped a short time ago. They have a large tarp up so as to cover the Truck so no water will get into the fuel tank.. They had to take the bed of the truck off to get to what ever they are doing.. since they do not have a lift in my back yard..LOL Now getting ready to make some more salsa...Friend of mine went to farmers market and picked me up some more tomatoes.. they sure are nice ones.. wish I could have had some of my own.. oh well I got half bushel for $12.00 comes out to about 25 cents a pound.. and you sure can't beat that. so off to the stove with me.. catch you all later..
