I scored pretty well today.. went to the Habitat for Humanity Re-Sale Store.. (great stuff)

So I was just sneeking around while my Mom was buying a screen door for her patio glass door (since hers blew far away in a hurricane)

I saw an old feeder truck (tractor trailer, sorry about the UPS lingo) went in to find tons of CHEAP stuff.

So, I got a great frame .25, an iron chair soo cute 1.00 (gave it to my Mom after all she will be 50 this year lol) 3 old porch lights 2.00, and a chandelier 1.00.. not to mention yesterday I bought a bookcase for 5.00.. off our local yard sale site (its UGLY right now! so pardon it lol)

I'm still not totally sure what I am going to do with everything.. the porch lights are going to be candle holders, I might actully use the chandelier as one.. lol

Here is a picture of everything.. if you have ideas.. serve them up!

Oh, if your out there robojunker/Margo I LOVE YOUR WEBSITE!

OMGoodness! You are so lucky. It is -6 degrees here and that is too cold for me to venture outside unless I absolutely have to! Does it count if I go through some of the boxes of stuff I bought during the summer and have yet to organize?

Wow--you really made a haul today. Looks like some great stuff. Ginghamgirl--I can't imagine -6 weather. It was around 60 here today and we thought it was a little cool! Guess we'd better be more thankful.

  5. Such cool finds - really love the porch lights! I also had a great day of finds --- I am out hunting up spring gardening items to resell. We went to an estate sale and an antique store...found old metal garden tools in greens & reds for 25 cents each! But, my favorite find was a large metal hand cart on wheels - rusty blue with a yellow interior for $15(it is almost 4' x 4'-- guess maybe from a car shop originally to hold tools). It will anchor my antiques booth for my spring display. I had to literally dig it out of the snow & ice --- the first time in a long time that my husband wondered if I had gone off the edge. Actually had a car of people watch me unbury this treasure outside the shop --- then look in amazement at what I had actually unearthed. Such fun to hunt & gather!!

My find today wasn't as exciting as the ones you found. I moved my furniture and found lots of dust bunnies...or in my case dust dinosaurs. (I have a family of pets and hardwood floors...so the bunnies can just slide across my floors) I would ask if there are any ideas for the dust bunnies out there....but my husband doesn't need any more reasons to think I am crazy. lol

I do hope my link to a photo works. My best find on my treasure hunt in the city (Memphis) yesterday was my "Om Frog." I plan to spray him black and put him in the flower bed. Your opinions on painting.....
I probably paid too much for it but I bought it from another junker in an antique mall. Paying it forward!

  11. JC you did really good! Cool stuff. Very nice $5 bookcase!

Kari, that metal cart sounds like it was quite a find! And I love the story of how you got it.

Margo, that looked like a really fun day in Arcadia! I loved the old tie rack, the big jar of buttons, and the pic of your hubby in front of the old coffin hehe, all the other stuff too.

Love that Om Frog Lila! He looks like something right out of the psychedelic 1960's.

OOh! Love everybody's stuff! Got this old store counter/desk/table at a gunshop that my husband frequents. Saw it setting out in the alley so I followed my husband into the store. The minute he saw me he said, "I KNOW why you came in here!" LOL Sure enough, store owner told me that I could have it and he even helped us load it into our truck! (Can't beat that for a deal! LOL)

With a little fixing up (it needs a side panel) and some paint, it's gonna be my craft/painting/making messes table in the computer room.

  15. I got some fun things today - in spite of dipping temps and more snow. We visited a nearby town that was having a community rummage sale - indoors! I found plates for mosaics, a bowling ball for a gazing ball project, a vintage green tin filing box - complete with key for the lock, a black metal shelf with towel bar, and more! I needed this fix - guess I really am a 'junkie'! :)

  17. Um, well, yes, I DID get something good yesterday, but I'll have to wait until tomorrow to bring it all in and take photos. YES, I HIDE my junk from my DH. I guess you know that you are a really Junk Junkie when you try to hide it from your loved ones! And when I'm just about out of storage space, this haul is going to be hard to hide it all. I might have to resort to moving his truck (in storage in the garage with battery charger cables hooked up to it) and stashing stuff in the attic over the garage!

Honestly, I went to one flea market yesterday and then one barn sale. I thought that the flea market was a real haul until I got to the barn sale. The old fella said it was the last day of his sale because he was closing his doors and selling the barn (he sold every weekend during the warm months for years and years) and that he would make me a good deal. I spent $20 bucks at each place and my Jeep Cherokee is filled to the gills!

I cannot wait until I get my goods out of the Jeep and survey what I really bought. Just a hint - 3 old thick turned table legs for 50 cents each! I can see Angels, of course! Anyway, I'll try to get pics when I take everything out tomorrow and post them here.

  18. Wow you lucky duck ...I tried to find 3 old door knobs yesterday and the only place I knew that would have them wanted 3-5.00 for them. So I went to another place and found a whole set(2 knobs and the middle piece) for 3.50...It's just hard to fine good stuff around here. They don't have any kind of salavage yards here...CONGRATS on you finds...

    Posted 4 years ago #
  19. Thanks, Leveta! I don't always make out like this yesterday. I like to hit the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in our area. I found a few brass door knobs last week for .50-1.00 each, but then found another box of "the good knobs" glass and nicer brass and they were $5 each! Not in my budget - I like the cheap stuff.

  21. Found a bag of 8 vintage knobs (glass, porcelain, brass, pewter, and 3 great grungy rusty ones) all for $ 4.95 for the whole bag last week. Stopped at feed store and purchased a small roll of chicken wire and some neat clay pots @ Walmart ($ 1.00/ea) and hubby got busy making wire cloches. They turned out so neat and I also discovered a new spray paint by Krylon called Champagne Nouveau that looks wonderful with the brass knob cloche. The silver finish on that cloche needed help and the paint did the trick. All of them are in my booth for $ 8.95 each and keeping my fingers crossed they will find new homes. Jan

  24. Just got back home from an overnight trip so I will go to the booth tomorrow and take some pictures of them. The one with the champagne finish on the wire went to my friend for her birthday present. She fell in love with the color of the wire too! It really made a difference with the brass knob. I am on the hunt for more knobs that average out at that price now! Check back tomorrow and I will post the pictures.

  30. Hi everyone,
Just joined this group and so glad to have found some kindred spirits here. My junking is in small doses these days thanks to cold weather putting a damper on curb alerts and dumpster diving. But there's still the thrift stores where I made a couple nice snags the other day. A great little jewelry box, mint condition, and a lime green Scotch tape dispenser. I needed both. Paid less than two bucks for them both together. And yes, I snuck them into the house.

  34. Thanks luv and Brez,
Not big scores, but I'll take the little finds along with the WOW finds. If you like green, you'd love my dining room. Not sure yet if I do. When we moved in to our "new" home (actually not new, blt. in the early 19s), we were amused to find that the previous owners had painted the room chartreuse or dayglo green, whatever. Figured we'd be painting it first thing. But we're finding now that it's kind of growing on us. Like some jungle plant of the same hue. The house is a bungalow, and I think the last owner was trying to copy the bungalow color palette I've seen in decor. books. She almost got it. But the dining room, in it's own charming/alarming way, is just a bit off. I'm thinking maybe I could take the edge off of it with a diluted stain wash--might soften the color a tad. I would have loved it if it had been painted the same as the tape dispenser. Ah, well...

    ~radioflyer

    Posted 4 years ago #
  35. Hmm...still haven't quite gotten the attach photo in the right size thing yet. Maybe this time? This is the lime green dining room. And in order to keep with the topic here, I got some of my recycled picture frames in the shot. Along with my recycled photos of my relatives (none of whom are recycled, that would be creepy). You may need sunglasses to view this picture. See what I mean about that color?

Radioflyer, Did you know that you could take your tape dispenser to the paint store and they can mix up the color for you. I think they just need a 1 inch square to hold up to the machine to do a match. Diana

  37. Radioflyer I just LOVE older homes. They have so much more charm then the newer homes. My first home was built around 1890's. But needed so much work cause it wasn't kept up.

  40. Diana, Leveta, and Kari,
Thanks for your comments. Yes, I've thought of taking a color I like to the paint store--that green dispenser would be just the thing. However, hubby is not ready to paint yet. He knows when the time is right--I guess he feels it in his bones or something. Spring probably, when we can open windows.

I love old photos. I seem to be the repository for my entire extended family. Everyone sends them to me, which is wonderful. I even bring home old photos of strangers if I like the looks of them. I try not to get them mixed in with my real family--that could cause problems down the road for anyone doing genealogy.

I know what you mean, Kari. It grows on you. And if I'm stuck with it for a while--I might as well play it up with the b/w.

Leveta, my prev. house was an 1870s--it too was ramshackle.

  41. My current home was built in 1857...we found it vacant in 2006 on a Saturday-Easter weekend drive. That Monday we owned it. Took us a year of weekend work (we lived about 3 hours away at the time) and the help of a wonderful carpenter, electrician, plumber, brick mason to pull it back into shape (and we did it on a very LOW budget - contracted out only what we knew was beyond our abilities). Many called it "scarey" and mentioned the word "bulldozer" a few times --- a good friend left "shaking" the first time they visited. I even had to convince an Insurance Company to insure it --- they took it on on a "Builder's Risk" policy. Almost a year to the date we found it, we moved in -- no water...they put in a new well as the ground thawed out that April.

But it was such a fun adventure...only time I doubted what we were doing was the first night staying there...as soon as it was dark and my husband couldn't see or hear me --- I cried, cried, cried - wondering what I had gotten us into.

Today, two years later the value has increased 5 times, and we can't imagine living anywhere else. My "shaken friend" makes trips to the farm -- it is kind of her dream come true too. It is now described as "beautiful" and we are described as "lucky".

  42. I love it Kari, that's my kind of place...Now that's a real treasure...

    Posted 4 years ago #
  43. Kari, you are so fortunate. I get it - but my husband wouldn't get it. He would probably donate the lighter and some old newspapers to the cause. My parents bought an oldie (1912) about 40 years ago that was in need of repair in every one of the 14 rooms. We had very little money so only one room was worked on a year. Of the 6 upstairs bedrooms, only three had electricity and the others were used for curing meat, cleaning/storing guns, and raising chicken! My folks put a lot of blood sweat and tears into our home.

You and your DH have obviously done the same thing. Bravo - job well done!

  48. Yesterday's finds were 3 vintage French books (dateing 1915 - 1929) for $ 3.00 each; vintage checkboard with crowns on edges; 2 pkgs neat wire for projects; vintage tin scoop; roll of new gardening wallpaper border; small metal plant stand. Will have to get busy over the weekend and create some neat projects. The books are just super cool and I was really excited to find them. I plan on painting the backside of the checkerboard with chalkboard paint so it will have 2 functions. Jan

  49. Jan (magark), where did you find that stuff yesterday? I didn't find anything that good. I'm jealous! :)

    Posted 4 years ago #
  50. At the booth and I will be more than happy to share my finds with you too! There is plenty of wire in the packages and the rolls of wallpaper border were never opened either. I have tons of stuff to clean out around here and will let you know when I pile it up and you can have first "dibs" on it. There are a couple of books I left in that booth and didn't purchase so you might want to check them out. Also I think I have over 20 wire flower frogs too. Call and I will tell you where to look. 51. Jan, your wire cloches are great. I've never seen anything like them and my mind is racing.....Thanks for sharing, Sue

  52. Got the idea from Raised in Cotton on her blogspot. She has some of the neatest ideas so take a look when you get a chance. She has instructions with the ideas too and is so talented with her work. I did discover a 12" clay tray on the back wall and would love to make a very large one if I can find the right topper for it. My mind is in high gear to see what is laying around here that might work for one or in my junking to find something. I just love to dig in booths, boxes, barns and such for great finds and to recreate something with it. My husband is so talented when I present an idea and comes through with flying colors. He has made neat insulator candle holders with wire harness and I added prisms for extra pizzaz. Next project is to make some with vintage white light covers (as seen in older bathrooms). Just ran across several of them cleaning off a shelf. Will try to post pictures when we complete the project. Thanks! Jan

Jan, I would love to see picture of your insulator candle holders. I have a couple boxes of insulators I've picked up at auctions. I'm always looking at thrift stores and garage sales for cheap heavy metal candleholders that the insulators will fit in. Diana

    Posted 4 years ago #
  54. Let me clean them up tomorrow and take a couple of shots for you. Hubby just took a roll of small sturdy wire and created a harness for them and you will be able to figure it out once you see the pictures. I just thought they needed some bling and used the prisms around the bottom wire. I hung them on the patio with S hooks and they are holding up fine and plopped tea lights in them. I can't wait to get started on the white light fixture covers. I found some with neat designs on the clear part of the glass and they should turn out cool. My mind is constantly whirling when I am looking at items out shopping. What would we do without junk! Jan

hmmm - wonder if you could wire a thin wooden back to it and use it as a cloche! Or just hang it on the wall as is for a wall sconce.

    Posted 4 years ago #
  60. I have thought about using something to close the back and then with the front opening display little objects. Even given the thought of cutting some Quaker lace for the back. I would love to use it for display of seasonal objects in our booth too. I wonder what type of wood could be used on the back. It just has so many possiblities and was too cute to pass up. Thanks! Jan

  61. I'm thinking that it might be good upside down. If you mount it on the wall that way you could add a bigger shelf on top, maybe fill the inside first with ivy, etc. Also, mounted on the wall with the metal top/floor removed, it would make a nice towel holder in a bathroom.

  62. Great thought ! Thanks! Jan

    Posted 4 years ago #
  63. Great idea Midge. Turning it upside down brings on a whole new prespective.
I thought, put the back up against the house, then put a frog in it. Or you could dress it up and make it into a fairy house that I've been seeing others do over at GW.

  64. Y'all are really making my feeble mind whirl now! I do have a fairy garden in one of my fern beds and that might be a great idea. I am beginning to dislike the green color and thinking of painting some other color now...any ideas on that venture? Thanks! Jan

    Posted 4 years ago #
  65. You can use sheet moss in it if you want to plant anythng live...

    Posted 4 years ago #
  66. I am beginning to like the idea of turning the cage thingy upside down. I could pack it with spagnum moss, some potting soil and fill it with cuttings from my fig ivy. (That stuff lives year round down here and stays green). I can use to top to put some neat figurine or pouty puffy frog on top. I just don't want the ivy growing on the brick...hubby has a fit over that on bricks! Thanks for the ideas. Will post the finished project later ! Jan

we stayed at a log cabin and the owners had taken an old cane-type chair, hung it up on the side of garage/barn and let her vines grow up and over it...was pretty cute and rustic....and wouldn't that half cage look cute sitting up on that chair, too.

    Posted 4 years ago #
  68. It would a cute idea and an old bottomless chair is on my list of things to get for spring. The last one gave up the ghost after 2 years and actually collapsed when John was blowing the sidewalk off. I couldn't help but laugh at that event...never had a chair die over a leaf blower! Thanks! Jan

  69. magark I like your candle holder. Have you thought about maybe drilling some holes around the top for your wire....I may have to try one...Thanks for the ideal...

    Posted 4 years ago #
  70. John just made a wire harness around the top section and part of the bottom section to securely hold it and I attached the prisms on the bottom wiring and used ornament hangers. I have never drilled into one of them since we don't have a diamond bit for glass....have all the other bits but not that one! He is so crafty with wire as he has made his own crawfish traps in the past and had no trouble making the wire garden cloches either. Anyway it was easy to make with the wire harness and we are going to try it next on those tacky white light fixture covers from the 50's. I think they would make neat candleholders and you can plop a tealight in one and hang from your tree or patio. Will post those next when we finish them. Good luck on making one and please post for us to see. Thanks! Jan

  71. wow! that's all I was thinking looking at all the photos! I'm trying to keep the pics and posters together, lol!
Radioflyer-that's green alright! But we had the exact same idea! My living room is green also, and I collected dozens of picture frames til I had enough, and painted them all the same black shiny paint and hung them up on one wall. Let me see if I have a pic of that....
Magark I LOVE the chicken wire cloches and the insulator candle holder! I use the insulators over my dusk to dawn lights, it looks so GOOD!My husband made me a hanging candle holder using three old mason jars and some wire, and it's very pretty. Just sand in the bottom and tea lights dropped in,zinc lids cover them when not in use.

In the last week I found old hymnals to use in my crafts, some mens neckties for a few future projects(lampshade and granddaughter a skirt-remember those?)I don't have enough ties yet..Goodwill is actually charging $2.19 for a tie, but the other thrift store charges $1, and they have half price on Tuesdays(yeah and I get a senior citizens discount now!!!*sigh)I found a lot of crafting supplies at Michaels on clearance and used my 50% off coupon, uhhhmmm,I forget too easy lately..oh, I found another "H" for my little wall collage, for our last name. Soon I'll have a lot more photos of finished projects.

  72. Jan - I love your wire cloches!!! You guys all have my mind RACING with ideas - and now I want to hang my chairs on the wall - thanks for sharing gigi!!!

    Posted 4 years ago #
  73. Nice photo wall, Kudzu. I have such limited wall space in my bungalow that I haven't even tried hanging photos of relatives that are still living. The ancient ancestors take up room enough.

With a name like Kudzu, I'm guessing you're from the south. (I'm quick, huh?) So... would any of those hymn books you just got happen to be shape-note hymn books, the kind found mostly in the south? I collect hymn books and shape-notes are the hardest for me to find up here in the frozen tundra of NY.

Please don't chop them up or glue stuff to them or drill holes in them until you look inside. If you find any shape-note books, I'd gladly trade some on my regular ones (and I have some really old neat ones) for them. You will recognize the ones I mean by the notes being in the shapes of triangles, ovals, squares, and diamonds. These are also known as Fa-Sol-La singing books.

  75. Margo that chandelier is great! And I checked out your blog - you really scored big this weekend - love everything! I went "shopping" in some of my hubby's old rusty junk. Found bed springs and an old crusty-rusty metal feed scoop that I've got ideas for.

  78. Finally got out and about this weekend! Forgot about a great little store 7 miles away that all the proceeds go towards an animal shelter... picked up these goodies... Old kids records, a junkified candle holder, license plates and old sign. I want to figure out something to do with the 1969 Iowa license plate for my dad's new shop. He graduated in '69... any thoughts? How about the records? My ears are open!

  79. Love your finds. I liked the little shovel thingy and the crates. Where I do most of my gathering one of the displays is created out of crates. If you ever get this way stop in and look around there. Trader Bakers on Hwy 60. Owensboro, Ky. Maybe we can meet there...

just got back from an auction (first real one this year..WOW!!)

picked up about 20+ insulators, love 6, the rest will get sold. :)

wanted a spool cabinet, willing to go $250...sold for $275 boo-hoo!!
my husband said...i thought you were going to cry! and yes, i really was!! :( oh well...i suppose not meant for me to have...i'll get over it................eventually!

they had about 100 license plates ranging from 1910-present! porcelain were awesome but i ended up tackling the guy who purchased the remaining lot just to purchase 2....one from my and husbands birth years...will make a project from those for our bedroom!? oh-la-la!
my husband picked up an old tackle box filled to the brim with lures and all, alot of older in the package items, too!!

my first impression was also my last...i sure do hope all the other auctions i hit this year go for less money or the high rollers stay home....too rich for me!! i may have to get into the tackle box and sneak some lures to sell just to recoup the investment! tee-hee :)

    Posted 4 years ago #
  81. I think a weath made from the lures would be neat...

  82. I went to what looks like a Junk place. Yes they have junk, but boy was it expesive...So on the way home we stop at a little place that wasn't much BUT did come away with 2 insulators(1.00), a blue bottle(.25), a metal serving cart(2.00) and 2 small piggy banks for GK's(.50). So I guess I didn't do to bad. The other place had the ice cream parlor chairs among Lotsssssssssss of other stuff, the cheapest one being 18.00. IS that a good deal or is it alot for one??

  83. I'm headed to an auction tonight, so I hope to have some goodies by tomorrow.

  84. I ran to the booth today and managed to snag a few old door knobs on my way out. I got 2 glass door knobs, one grungy metal, and 2 other grungy metal complete with the old hardware! Guess hubby will be busy with projects again. We finally got items listed on Etsy this week too...sellers name magark. Tomorrow afternoon I am going to put out one of the wire garden cloches with the glass knob that we posted on here a couple of weeks ago. No one in this area seems to understand them so we are going to give them a whirl on Etsy for $ 8.95 each. Earlier this week I found a wonderful half mannequin bust for use in the booth too. Hope everyone finds some goodies this weekend. Jan

  85. Leveta -wow, sounds like a great haul! Have fun with your projects. Sue

  86. I finally hit my first auction of the season last Tuesday night... saw a few things I wanted... but wanted them cheap. Things were going quite high so I thought I'd stick around for the fire sale. I really wanted this mantel clock that was just the shell... no guts, I've seen some neat ideas with them... so I wait until the bidding gets down to $1.00, someone bid $1.50 and I just couldn't spend the extra .50...and of course someone picked it up. I still walked away with some goodies... it was a long nite though for the small haul I pulled in.

    Posted 4 years ago #
  87. Sounds like a fun night. Our auctions down here are never that affordable. I am making myself stay away from them until I clear out some of the plunder around here. That sounded like a neat clock shell and the price was right! Maybe next time. Keep us posted. Jan

    Posted 4 years ago #
  88. Oh, wow, that clock sounds like it should be in the "One that got away" forum! Sometimes I'm just too cheap too when I'm out and about. I don't go to auctions but do hit a lot of estate sales and thrift stores. Sometimes I just don't want to shell out that extra little bit sometimes... Sue

    Posted 4 years ago #
  89. Sue- I thought of posting it there after I started... is that a problem for us junkers... we're so use to finding something free or so cheap that it makes us extremely thrifty? Maybe I'll make that a new discussion topic...
    Kim

    Posted 4 years ago #
  90. Kim - I will respond to your new thread too, but YES, I do hate to pay much for anything since I've been junking. My husband calls me cheap - I call my self resourceful!

    Posted 4 years ago #
  91. Went junking with a friend today and found an antique shop that had everything 1/2 off. I got the large iron bird cage (31" tall x 10" diameter); couple of pkgs. stickers; rhinestone crown pendant; 2 vintage cards printed in Germany dated 1920. This is the first time the sun has shined in a week and the day was perfect! Not sure if I am keeping the bird cage though....may clean it up, repaint and put in the booth until I decide what to do with it. Jan

  97. In the background picture of the bird cage is last year's great find of a large truck spring and a black iron candle stand I found at a thrift store. I used floral putty to adhere them and stuck a candle in the spring. It was like they were meant to go together. Maybe next week I can work on cleaning up the bird cage and giving it a fresh coat of paint. If I decide to keep it I may plop a rabbit's foot fern in it just to see how it will work. I am welcome to any ideas too! Thanks! Jan

here it is...sat morn, husband off to bed after working all night, kept skids up extra late so that i could venture out on my own this morning to a nearby town fleamarket and take in a small one at a local school.
i am very disappointed :( there was 1 vendor between setting up-dismantling outside, 3 open inside and lots of empty parking space. i walk over to the lone guy and tell him it's my 1st time there and his response....we usually do better on sunday! (i should hope so!) i grab some fruit and veggies from an open vendor and head on to the school...get there 1 hr early and the overseer tells me to go in and look, i won't disturb anyone...i am equally disappointed here, too....while there is about 6-7 booths....most have nothing that interest me and the few things that do are outrageously priced.
sadly, i start my drive back home and pull over for some coffee and pick up some amish made buckeye candy.....that's about 2 1/2 hrs of my life i'll never get back and the things i picked up....i could have gotten a few streets over from my house!!
i sure do wish we had alot more places to go-look-sell-buy around here!! i'm more than ready for a LIL' BIT OF TEXAS!!!!

    Posted 4 years ago #
  113. I just went to an estate sale that started at 9:00 and we arrived about 9:20...things picked over and if it looked like any that was left we were spared of spending money on useless stuff. I think I am going to spend the rest of the day listing stuff to get rid of on Etsy and packing other stuff for future sales. I took all the items on my 1/2 price shelves in the booth to the thrift store next door so I can have some room to put stuff from the house. It is amazing how we can accumulate so much stuff in a short time! I am ready to create stuff for the yard/flower beds now. Have a great weekend! Jan

Well like I said, didn't hit any type of jackpot this week. Seems like people are getting greedy.. I know you need the money.. but phew you wouldn't belive the prices on some stuff I saw today.. so sad. No WAY I would pay some of those crazy prices.. as I said "To RICH for my blood"

I forgot to add, I found what I THOUGHT were Curtain Rods.. I was going to resell them. Well, I sorta got ripped off. I got 4 for 3.00 one of which I had to fix.. if they were curtain rods.. boy are they heavy.. the stars are CAST IRON. Anyway.. I stuck them in my pots outside.. gave my Mom two..

The Bird lamp shade, has three diffrent photos on it.. what will I ever do with it? I don't know.. any ideas?

  121. The three chairs on top I got in an Antique store in Savannah about four years ago. They had no seats in them and I was going to replace the seats. I never got around to it so I put plants in them.
The cauldron came from the highway 80 sale as did the patio table.
The canister set I bought for five dollars and just love it.
The spindles on the buffet with the candles on them. I found them in a box in a thrift store. I cleaned them up and sanded them and stained them. I bought the bases for them at Lowes and stained to match and put candles on them.
The table I bought a couple of days ago in an antique store down the street from me. I'm going to refinish it so I took it to the shed.
I did see a place to add captions under the pictures so I had to send a separate post.

  125. Thank you for your nice comments. I think the three chairs will stand out more if I add some red flowers and vines for the backs. I've been looking at the seed sites. I had morning glories on the backs last year but they died as soon as we got our first frost. I'd like vines that will come back year after year.

ok, i'm starting to sound broken...
here it is sun, we went back to the same fleamarket as i did yesterday and it was still not good! hardly no vendors...period! i was definitely upset today...i was expecting to see more than i did...i honestly don't know if i'll give it another chance later on or not.
i had wanted to see for myself how well it did and maybe pick a few wkends to set up a table myself...so, it's heartbreaking to see the results the last few days...it seems to not be a wise investment of time-money...i suppose i need to weigh some other options at this time!
sure hope you all did better this wkend! :( :)

  129. I went to a flea market for the first time this year, the weather cooperated! I used my nifty bag I won and found an old picture frame an old clock and 5 yardsticks. Will turn the frame into a chalkboard, the yardsticks into a star and the clock will be used for something not sure yet. All for 2.75! This was not my favorite flea market but it is close.

  133. We just all have the itch...and, if you are in snow country - we are also "ready, set, go" for that first flea market ---- soon, my friends, soon.

This weekend I went to an auction and antique store on Saturday - spent more than I should at both places....but had such a run on my antique booth & case on Friday, needed to restock (my barn supply is low after winter). People are most definitely out and about antiquing --- I am seeing both spring/easter smalls and gardening items & furniture going briskly out the door.

My best finds of the weekend was a really charming large ornate frame that looks almost silver-leafed. I also found a wonderful green McCoy pitcher and a great transfer-ware platter. These are all keepers. To sell, I found my first metal garden rocker of the year - great patina, rust & colors from years of painting peaking through. Also found a charming white shelf - chippy & all --- when I started cleaning it, discovered a wonderful robin's egg blue is peaking out under the paint along the edges.

    Oh, spring!
    Kari

am very excited! a few wks ago..my husband found an old cast iron eagle at a thrift store and we bought it for $5. asked several people if they had any idea of its use, worth, etc. no luck there, so i went straight to the horses mouth and waa-laa....got the answer!!
an executive assistant of the company...bless her heart....took the time to ask people about this plaque until she found an answer! she talked with many until she found one man who proudly displays his plaque on the side of his barn (sounds like our kind of guy!)
it's a limited edition plaque made especially to celebrate the companies 100th anniversary...they were given to employees, town folk, important citizens, etc. at a celebration held one yr after turning 100 yrs old.
i was interested because the company started in my state and is still going strong, tho it has changed names-somewhat over the years...it's still well-renowned....i'm thrilled to own a small piece of its history....i have 1 of only 200 made!!! yippee!!

  137. I found an old ornate brass frame about 6 months ago that I had planned to paint shabby white and list it on Ebay. I thought it was made in Italy but when I turned it over PRIOR (thank God) to painting, I discovered that it was pat'd April 24, 1894. SO - I just listed it on Ebay. I paid 25 cents for it and it sold last night for $68.77. I nearly fell over! A pretty good profit if I do say so myself!

I have since started listing on Etsy and love it much better. Had been with Ebay for 10 1/2 years. I just love your items. Very clever and one of a kind. Jan

  140. Jan, I have thought about Etsy too, but I guess I love the thrill of the auction type - in hopes that I get more money. Not to be greedy, just trying to support my habit. I also have 3 consignment shops here that I can/have put stuff in too. On Etsy, do you just set the price and wait for someone to buy? Have you had good luck on Etsy?

    Posted 4 years ago #
  141. I just started it on March 11th and have sold 8 items. Some came from the booth and I used those prices. You just set the price you want for it. They charge 20 cents to list it for 4 months and if it sells they only charge 3.5% of the final cost. Lots cheaper than Ebay charges. I paid them the last $ 250.00 in Sept when the raised their charges and other stuff. I had been with them 10 1/2 years and did really well too. We have a booth in a mall here and the monies support my junking habit. We love auctions and this weekend there is an estate sale from an old store and they even found old wooden caskets! Yikes! They listed a bunch of windows (some still with panes) and other stuff. The folks conducting the sale usually charge $ 2.00 or so for the windows. You should be here! Jan

They listed lots of primitives (my favorite!) podiums, pedestals, furniture, vintage Milton Bradley games (fun!) and just loads of stuff. I hope it isn't picked over by the time I get over there Sat. morning. Doors open at 9:00 and it is usually a push and shove event (which I no longer do well) and we often wait until folks have finished all their snatching and then go inside. They all want the foo-foo stuff and I want the "good" stuff to recreate with. I try to think outside the box when searching for stuff at estate sales anyway. No one seems to understand what I plan to do with it when I get it home. Wish you could attend. I just hope it isn't a bust even though the flyer sounds wonderful you never know until you walk inside. Will let y'all know Sat. afternoon if I get any good finds! Jan

  144. Well, I've gotten quite a few phone calls in the last couple weeks, but I guess I didn't expect that many of them would be from people trying to give me their junk. It could be good or bad, depending on the "junk". One call was from a director of a nearby senior center. For years they've had an old player piano that didn't play and was too expensive to fix, so would I be interested in taking it off their hands? I explained that I would, but I didn't have a way to transport it or helpers. So they moved it outside waiting for me. Today I spent the afternoon dismantling it (my new friend Jack helped). Then in the evening my husband and son tagged along to help with the final part -- once you're at the cast iron stage you can't do it alone, it's too dangerous. Anyway, I've included a before picure, a picture of my progress in the afternoon, and a sampling of some removed parts. This should keep me busy for awhile.

  146. Hubby made me this wonderful wire cloche last night using one of the brown porcelain door knobs I found it one of my shopping sprees. I painted the wire a champagne nouveau by Krylon and it really set it off although it is hard to tell by the picture. It is cloudy here and hard to get a good pic. This cloche is 20" tall and 9.9" in diameter. Now to do something with the clay tray. Any thoughts? I am going to have fun displaying in this cloche. Thanks! Jan

  147. Oh Jan, that is CUTE. How hard is it to form the wire at the top? Do you get cut up when you work with the chicken wire? Sweet! Sue

    Posted 4 years ago #
  148. It isn't too hard for him as he has experience with wire when making his own crawfish traps. He just forms the top and inserts the knob and ties it off with additional wire to secure it. We have made several but some of the folks in our area just don't seem to catch on....clueless! Anyway I think they are fun and put them in our booth and even put one on Etsy. Thanks ! Jan

also some fishing poles and an old yarn/wool type piece (that for the life of me i cannot remember it's real name....you can use it with a spinning wheel, the top is sectioned and spins??....ah, help me, ladies?)

    Posted 4 years ago #
  150. I thought they were called yarn spinners. My DH found parts of one in a old house...Can't wait to see what you make with your signs...

  153. This is my haul for today....the most I paid for anything in this grouping was $ 2.00. There is 100 yds of grograin ribbon on the spool and it has never been used...jello molds, cookie cutters, 2 vintage books, bingo game, grater, and I forgot to put the clear glass tube in the group. Jan

  154. This is my favorite item....green rusty plant stand that was $ 10.00. I just love it and will keep it and probably put 2 pots of herbs in the 2 holders. Forgot in the previous picture was a silverplate baby cup, 2 brass initial letters, bud vase and cute drain with green frog (will use him in a plant).

  155. Oh, Jan, this all looks like so much fun. I especially like the bingo game...I've been looking for one too.

    Posted 4 years ago #
  156. Thanks! That find was 50 cents and I think it still has the little round plastic discs with it. Haven't decided what to do with them just yet. I may make a chalkboard with a round pizza pan I found the other day and maybe glue some of the bingo discs on the rim. Just not sure yet ! I have 2 other bingo games stashed in a tub in the garage to list on Etsy...one is the bride bingo and the other is the baby shower bingo. I had totally forgotten about them until I opened one of the stored tubs and saw them in there. Jan

I think we've all had the should of, would of, could of moments. Sometimes, if I see something interesting, I will go back around a second time and if it's there, I usually end up buying it!

  161. Stopped by the local thrift store today before my hair appointment and got a few things. Most pumped about the set of 6 plates for my mom... she collects these pieces and they are hard to come by because they are old. Also got a yard stick cut into pieces, some hardware, a couple metal things, a corkboard, candle holders and Jenga... for the kids... excited to start seeing what I can come up with for these!

then we'll hit the GW and peruse the aisles for similar objects to recreate what we just saw!

    sounds like a plan....i'm locked-loaded and ready to roll....haha :)

  168. Hillbilly - what is the name of the dishes your Mom collects? I have seen that pattern in our mall and they aren't too expensive down here. Actually the thrift store next door sells plates and such for 25 - 50 cents so I can look out in there too. I took 3 of today's finds to the booth a few minutes ago and going to tackle 2 more tubs of items I discovered in the garage. Found 2 late yesterday and sorted them....I have got to quit buying and storing! Have a great weekend! Jan

i hear you on the buying/storing/making,etc :)magark!!

it is this site!!! lol :)

i have picked up more things since posting on this website...and made different things that normally i wouldn't..tried new ideas/techniques.

is that a bad thing? uh....nope!

*i think this site has helped many people make blogs (eventually i will try it, too)
*it's helped spark more creativity by trying new things you've seen or read about here.
*it's gotten more people to try their hand at shops, malls, booths, etc....the selling end of it
*it's created a bigger fan base for junking and sharing junk facts
*it's broadened our junk horizons by tips/sharing where the places are to go/see all over the U.S...and further
***oh, i could go on...but i think you see where it's headed.....

i may be spending more money in picking up things, maybe auctioning alot more, but all in all...it's balancing out with learning new techniques, ideas and such!

    so...today i got :)
alot of hinged hardware, door handle, old wire rack, old tablecloth, 4 silver cup-like thingy-ma-bobs (that look as if they once belonged to a very little used chopping appliance?)think i'll use them for candle holders now, old silverware for windchimes....then of course i had to get husband some camo bags and the kids t-shirts from their school...so, all in all....the whole family made out in the deal!! haha!

  170. gigi - Sounds like a fun buying spree for you today. I am debating on either using that round thing I bought today for a frame or maybe a chalkboard. I really like the idea of the chalkboard simply because it is different. Anyway...that will be next week's project. I am trying to set up a blog spot today and I am not too computer literate so you can imagine my afternoon....ugh! I won't give up though! Have a great weekend and post your projects when you get time. Jan

yes the round thing very interestingly designed on the sides..would look cute either way. if mine, may be tempted to put crystals along edge or even make a bird feeder on a post, from it :)

remember the post about making a pendant light? i wonder how adorable your minnow bucket would look as one!?!

i understand your computer frustration too, magark..can do very little on mine! going to try a blog also, mine mainly as a garage sale place like so many are going to...long given up on ebay (too expensive) and don't feel i'm ready for etsy yet!! :) alot of my problems now lie in posting pics....my daughter set up her mp3-video and somehow wiped out all my camera info and of course we save all the books for warranty-repair and such...and wouldn't you know, it's the only book i can't find! er!!!

  178. gigi: Get your pictures fixed and jump right in on Etsy. We too gave up Ebay after 10+ years with them...I now refer to them as Greedbay! Etsy is so reasonable and once you learn to navigate their system it is much easier to list. I am still learning and have already sold 10 items since starting earlier this month. We set up my blog late yesterday and it is still undergoing major tweaking! Jan

  181. Didn't get out much this weekend, but did find some things to play around with at home. My sister and I had decal orders and we had some extra room to play with some things. I made these plates and candy dish for resale, or home, haven't decided yet. The hemi garbage can is for a friend... and my coffee mug, well, I decided to promote the saying of junk revolution... hope no one minds... it's going to all my auctions, garage sales, and flea markets with me!

  183. I was at the same "tag" sale as magark this weekend. Picked up a few small things that I haven't photographed (a couple games, a McCoy planter, a pretty mirror, etc.). I also got this fun wooden sign - it is quite large - and this metal stepstool. The stepstool is on my porch for now holding pots, birdhouses, etc. Not sure about the sign. I should probably put it in my antique booth, but I would like to hang on to it. It is just fun.

(the last auction i hit that brought home the womens and population signs) i forgot to tell you all that they had the hugest, most beautifully rusted "purina foods sign with the two checkerboard sides" auctioning all 3 for one price.....i wanted that doggone sign something fierce...but i kept looking over my shoulder at my husband and i had to quit bidding at $150....they went for $175!!

the devil in me snuck up behind the winning bidder and said...i'm going to distract you while my husband loads those signs in our car!! lol :) that guy didn't hesitate to take his signs right then and head for the hills!! :) lol

(my desire for them definitely far outweighed my intelligent bidding to acquire them...i had swore to myself not to go above $50....so, it's probably best that he outbid me anyways....but they were pretty ladies!!!)

    Posted 4 years ago #
  186. Don't you hate when there's something that you really want and you tell yourself you'll only go $xx.xx... then wind up either winning it for WAY more than you thought you'd spend... or the next guy/gal got it for pennies over your last bid!?!

yesssss! even the boxed lots you wait for them to say...who'll give a buck and before you can open your lips, the guy next to you snatches them all up for that but if you say $1...it gets ran up to $15 or something....every single time!

month ago, i went to antique auction...they had the coolest bubblegum ball machine (forget the brand name) great shape, went for more than i cared to pay, thinking $45-ish?
luck of luck, on errands in another town today about 45 min away-stopped at their goodwill and scored myself a machine for $2.50....oh yippee-skippee!!!
had to have husband replace the long screw that runs top to bottom but hey.....for $2.50....i woulda held it together with duct tape or rubberbands if that didn't work!
now i'm looking for change all over the house to play with it!! wheeeee....my second childhood...lol
also picked up a mini glass top display case, older candle holder and angel, embroidered piece, stairstep basket (my husband has never seen one of these, he flipped when i brought it in....was like: whhhhaaaaat issss thhhaaaattt?) i thought everyone has seen them at one point or another....i guess hubby is too sheltered...lol :) all for about $20-cha-cha-ching!!!! woo-hoo!

leveta...the basket is really awesome for those who have stairs to climb up/down...it's shaped exactly like two steps...top part sits on higher step and the lower is double that size to sit further down...has handles for carrying....from the side view it looks like 3/4's of a whole basket....actually kinda silly looking-i guess but it works and that's what matters most, huh!? :)

  198. I love the lights - great finds! they would make neat planters or you could put a central pillar in them and surround them with stones or shells - something interesting. I don't know if they'd hold water but you could float flowers in them as a centerpiece with a tall pillar. I have a Habitat for Humanity near me in Maryland and I AM Going! I'm looking for a claw foot tub for my garden. Thanks for reminding me they exist. Have you ever gone to an architectural salvage place?

hillbillies..you may be able to go online or call that store nearest you and have them poll the others and see if they have what you're looking for...they're a great bunch of people...i think they 'd work with you to get a sale...it's a good cause! may even ship something from another state?
i've got one close to me but everytime i go in...their stock is kinda low...there's a few more further away but i don't want to drive to find them stocked the same so the guy at the counter gave me a list of all in our state and told me to call around-don't drive....and see what they come up with?!

I have a lot of the galvanized items tucked in my garden - I just love them. Everyone is so creative - it floors me. Can't wiat for nice weather so I can hunt - you have all inspired me!!! did auction today, usual guy running it that i like but was a different kind of auction than what i'm used to...nearly everything went in box lot or combination, so you had to be on your toes (and watch out for everyone else stampeding them over...lol) it was NUTS!!
did make off with some items i wanted and alot i really didn't....which definitely will go in my garage sale!! that's the bad thing with lots....but gotta take the good with the bad!

got 3 old sleds and crates, wooden locker (i'm hoping it holds a zillion dollars when i get it open...lol)alot of old avon bottles/fredericksburg/hull/beautiful green handled utensils/old mirror/old toys-books, etc (along with alot of dirt, spider webs and grimey gunk to clean off...which was FREE! :) lol

  207. Got some goodies at a local sale. More tomorrow I hope.

That big fan thing is part of a windmill. I have an article about it that Glo gave me, but my scanner is not working so I can't scan it. But it's 1/4 of the windmill. There were 4 sections like the one above. It's a real neat piece. The plant stand will be painted white, Love that shopping cart, and the rusty metal hanging planter.

This old metal rose and a metal lantern. There is so much you can do with these old metal lanterns.
I picked this rose up just for me. See how big it is, it's metal and has a great patina.
I'm keeping It and the windmill.

  210. I am envious of you with the metal rose and garden cart. Mine went to the dump as I left it hanging around too long and it got crushed. Next time I will do something with one in a hurry...ha! That metal rose is way cool and I can't wait to see what you do with it too. Wish I was at the Gresham barn sale this weekend. Jan

We live two hours apart, so she always calls me when she is out junkng, she had found a bucket full of old keys and wanted to know if I wanted them, I said yeah but how much are they, after all
it was a whole bucket full, when she asked the guy he said he wanted $2.00, she asked him if that was per key and he said for the WHOLE BUCKET!!!!!!
