I know there are fanatics out there like me...you know, the kind of person who, if they had a dollar for every magazine they've read, could probably put their kids through Harvard?? That's me, and I'm SICK over all of the magazines that have gone under due to the economy! You would think that with folks like us they could easily stay afloat! I think the one I'm the maddest about is Mary Engelbreit's magazine because it was so different from the others. I am now on the hunt to replenish all of my missing issues, which hasn't been easy! I can't wait for Ki's magazine!! What do you all prefer??

Romantic Country is a good, I also subscribed to Country Samlper, Create and Decorate and of course DIY...Sometimes I just need a fix so bad...I sure miss those other mags. I had 3 of the ones that's gone...

I bought a Country Living Mag yesterday because it's been so long since I bought a magazine I needed a fix! 3.99 and nothing that made me go Oh I love that! I like the specialty ones that come out maybe 4 times a year and 100 decorating ideas is usually pretty good. It was a shame about Mary Engelbreit but I'm sure with her talent she'll come up with someother venue. Can't wait for Ki's. Diane

I do so agree...I miss ME's Home Companion -- I just loved all the detail in that magazine and still get lost in the charm of my back issues. I hope that Mary will come back stronger with a new magazine when advertisers are again ready to commit.
On a different note - my all time favorite Wisconsin Artist, Tracy Porter, just closed down her Blog (which was extremely popular)...yes, you read that right-she ended her online information to concentrate on books again. Her book, Dreams From Home (part philosophy, part home decorating), brought me into the world of creating a home that surrounds you with joy.
I understand that economist believe the recession actually ended in July---will take about a year or so for us all to get back on our feet -- but I do believe better days are around the corner -- and with that, hopefully some new magazines/books to fill our hours.

I read hundreds of magazines. I have them stashed like bars of gold in my closet. They are organized by title and season. I buy them used. I buy them new. I subscribe. I bum from friends.
And now, I mourn. I have the premier issue of Cottage Living. Maybe I will sell it someday and send my great grandchildren to Harvard.
A magazine I find great enjoyment from is Traditional Home. Filled with antiques, gardens, castles in England to cottages in Connecticut, it is a meaty magazine with a lot of journalism to boot.
I read it cover to cover. The price is so reasonable, too.Go read a Country Living from the early 90's and read a current one. The weight of the magazine will tell you the difference before you open the front cover. More home designs. More articles. More features-- and no "green" section. I love nature and wildlife and live as a good steward to both. I use low-wattage bulbs and conserve electric and water on my own. For some reason the "green" section bugs me. It is too PC and takes up too many pages of a already budgeted-down-to-the-nubs magazine.
Try Traditional Home. This month is an anniversary edition. It will give you a good feel for where they came from and where they are going. They seem to be doing something right.

Okay, I loved loved loved home companion...i really miss it! I thumb through the old ones quiet often! I have to confess...I'm on Country Living strike. I am SO INCREDIBLY SICK of seeing the same ideas - over and over and over! Sometimes they even use the same pictures! BHG is just about as bad!!!
I HAVE discovered blogs....now I fire up the lap top when I need some design intervention...or pull out my stash of mags I've saved up!!!

I hear ya, redneckChic...I wouldn't be surprised if Country Living is ready to go under as well. Another thing I've noticed is something BlossomLane touched on which is how thin the magazine is now. Most of it is just ads. The old ones were so heavy and meaty. Like I said, I'm trying to replenish my missing Home Companions and always have a couple in my car if I get stuck waiting for some reason. The only problem I have with Traditional Home and House Beautiful is that those houses looks so rich...unlike the way I live in real life! They really never show any flea market finds or creative uses for things. Sigh...I guess I'll just keep hoping for better a Country Living and wait for Ki's magazine!

AMEN, sister! I agree - I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. It really rubs me the wrong way being preached to like that in a home decorating magazine! I remember one issue in that section, one of the contributors said we should keep the thermostat in our homes set as high in the summer as is tolerable, which would be about 80 degrees! Yeah, right - in Oklahoma in the summer?? No way. I suppose they also think we shouldn't use the AC in our cars when it's 100 degrees and humid!
Ahhh, I feel better now after letting off some steam.

P.S.
I too greatly miss Mary Englebreit Home Companion - that was my favorite! Boohoo. I do enjoy Victoria, Traditional Home, and all the BH&G decorating mags. I also have been pleasantly surprised by House Beautiful lately - it used to be too contemporary/modern for my taste, but now has much more of the country/cottage/shabby chic style I love.
Add me to the line of those eagerly awaiting Ki's new magazine!

Well, friends..I hit the magazine jackpot yesterday in an antique mall. There, bundled together, was 6 magazines with one of the Home Companions I have been searching for on top! Imagine my delight! There was also a House Beautiful in there, a Romantic Homes and I think a Victoria. I will revisit House Beautiful (starting with this issue in the stack) because of your comment, Callef. I'm open to trying anything because I AM a magazine addict! I paid $3.00 for the stack, which I didn't think was bad. I would have paid that gladly for the Home Companion alone!! Callef, do you have a lot of the old issues? Mary Engelbreit says she's trying to come out with a new magazine, but we'll see!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Pieces,
Ah, yes..antique malls and consignment stores! I go there specifically TO FIND magazines!!! I hit the jackpot last week at a Huntington, WV antique mall. Traditional Home for 50 cents an issue for the years 2005-2006.
You know you need to check yourself into a Publication Rehabilitation Facility when you can't find a copy of just about any magazine that you DON'T ALREADY OWN!!!
Spiders! I'm seeing spiders!

PS. Do you know that the *H-U-G-E* ROUTE 60 yard sale is, indeed, tomorrow? I believe US 60 spans all the way to Lexington...in fact, I know it does. Think of the publication possibilities! "All I need is one more magazine...I promise I'll quit buying after that..."
Posted 3 years ago # -
Our part of the hwy 60 yardsale is first weekend in oct...
Posted 3 years ago # -
I haven't heard of that one. In fact, I'm trying to picture where Route 60 is around here. I know where it is back home, but I'm not sure it comes this far...Oh, my husband just said that is Winchester in Lexington, so I stand corrected! All I know is that I'm gearing up for the 127 next weekend, but sadly, I only really have a day or maybe a day and a half at it if I'm lucky! You best believe I will be looking for magazines!

i am hoping ki's has sort of a shabby chic backround. that is what i am lookin for
Posted 3 years ago # -
My local haunt has old mags for 1$ each. Got a couple today.
So I'm out buying a wedding present for a long lost cousin that I've never met but Mom wants to go to the wedding, and I'm trying to think of something original so I think I'll make them up a movie basket. So I get a copy of Forrest Gump (a classic) and A Knights Tale (one of my favorites), a box of Orville's, some movie size candy, a couple of candle holders from Goodwill (don't tell anyone and I'm sticking in some candles from a candle party) and I'm looking for a bowl for the popcorn. One of the ones that say "Popcorn" on the side. And I search the mall even the Country Treasure Store and find nothing and as a last resort I go to my favorite store, Second Thyme Around and lo and behold there it is. One big white enamel bowl with the word popcorn for $6.99. And of course I got two mirrors to etch, a vintage skirt hem marker and the 3 magazines. DianePosted 3 years ago # -

To Piecesofthepast, Re: old issues of Mary Englebreit - I still have some, but I've been taking a lot of my magazines to church and giving them away. The stacks were taking over my house! Are there specific issues you're looking for? Let me know which ones and I'll be happy to look and if I have them, I'll mail them to you. The Lord has been speaking to me to get rid of some stuff. I have a great weakness for decorating BOOKS also! :)
Carol
Posted 3 years ago # -
Uh oh....Carol - I think the Lord has been doing the same for me on getting rid of clutter. I have been hauling lots to our church for our rummage sale next weekend too. I am even moving stale ineventory out of my booth. I did luck up on about 25 older Romantic Homes a few weeks ago at a thrift store for $ 1.50 for all. Read what I wanted and sold them in the booth. Jan

Carol and Jan,
The Lord definitely speaks to my husband..He should, he is a pastor! He is my declutter-er. On his last week long vacation, this summer, he cleaned the garage (put all my booth items into plastic totes he purchased). Then, he headed for our kitchen. The kids and I can't seem to find anything to cook with, but the cabinets look great!
I did part with my Reminisce, Country Woman, and Country magazines. Took them to a nursing home.
I also sell some of my magazines. I have a basket full in my booth. I can't figure why someone has not bought the entire basket yet! Only charge a dollar/issue.

Okay, all...here are the Mary Engelbreit Home Companions that I am missing:
Aug-Sept '98
Dec '98-Jan '99
Dec '03-Jan '04
Dec '04-Jan '05
Oct-Nov '05
Oct-Nov -06I see a pattern there...I am missing a lot of those holiday issues!!
Posted 3 years ago # -
I forgot...if anyone is holding the very FIRST magazine by her I would love that, too, but would be amiss if I didn't mention that you can get a pretty good chunk of change for it on ebay! :)

I was in WM last night and came across a new magazine called Fresh Home. I haven't seen this one before. Looks like it fairly new and comes out each season. I've not had a chance to look all the way thru it but looks like it has a few cute ideas.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I'll be waiting for your review of it...thanks! Jan

Oh my! I am a magazine junkie, but rarely buy them because they are so pricey! This morning I received a "just because" gift from my secret sister at church. Guess what she gave me?! The newest Romantic Homes, 100 Decorating Idea Under $100 and 100 Weekend Decorating Ideas!!!! I have THE BEST secret ever!
Posted 3 years ago # -
WOW...What a great gift...What a Blessing...
Posted 3 years ago # -
I too was a "mag junkie" but since ME and Country home have left us I really don't subscribe to anything else--yet that is until Ki and Matthew start their new venture. I would read each mag and then rip out what I wanted and discard the rest otherwise I would be up to my eyes in magazines. It seems from all the magazines that have ceased printing I have inherited a 3 year sub to BH&G subscription. I am also a "decorating" book junkie. Use to belong to a book of the month club and would buy there but had to stop since ran out of room and seemed most topics were covered.
Sorry for rambling-too much coffee this morning!

It seems I remember seeing that "Fresh Home" magazine, but I can't remember now if I thumbed through it! Yeah, let us know what it's like! I'm still getting "Country Living", but as I said earlier...I'm becoming disenchanted with it.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I just got back from WM where I picked up my first copy of Cottage Style. I've peaked at this several times on the stands and finally dropped $9.95 to get it. I HATE paying for magazines and have never paid that much for one. I usually pick up other mags at Sam's where they discount the cover price by about 33% I think. Anyway, this looked like it's packed with some cute ideas so I dropped the 10-spot and brought it home. I'll give my review after reading it cover-to-cover!

To: Piecesofthepast: (I have a hard time remembering everyone's name) I have two of the Home Companion issues you want - the October/November for 2005 and 2006. Email me with your address and I will be very happy to mail them to you! I found several of the holiday issues but they are the last three years, and apparently you have those. My email is Callef@sbcglobal.net

Don't you just hate the prices of mags now a days? They use to be less than 2 now they're over 5. I won't even pay that for good junk sometimes! Diane
Posted 3 years ago # -
I like country style, but like you I hate to pay that kinda price...But if it has some inspiring things and it's something you can look at time and time again I will buy(or you can send me yours)...lol...
Posted 3 years ago # -
I am re-reading my magazines. Photos have so much for the eye to "drink in" and I will read articles I may have missed previously. Not having the best memory in the world helps, too.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Sue, can't wait to hear what you think about Cottage Style. I hate wasting money on magazines that aren't worth it.
ChristyPosted 3 years ago # -
I must chime in here too- I was at WM wanting to get a fix, and I know you all said there wasn't anything... but was so disappointed! I WILL NOT pay over $5.00 for a magazine unless I've looked it over deeply in line and decided it was worth it, (Sue- let me know how that 10 spot mag is, lingered on that while I was checking out)
Thought- what if we sent a box around of some mags... kinda like the traveling junk, postage should be reasonable as we could send it media mail. I know I have a bunch of mag I have looked through over and over again, but wouldn't mind something new. maybe I'll start a new thread on this...
Posted 3 years ago # -
Well, for me, Cottage Style had a few cute ideas but nothing that I'd say that I was happy to spend my hard earned money on. : ( I'll have to be honest with y'all, there are not a lot of mags out there that make me go WOW! Maybe I'm just hard to please when it comes to my wants and needs of a magazine.
I, too, save all of my past issues of anything and pull them out for some re-read and re-glancing. I still get excited with some of my oldies but goodies!

Well finally looked thru the Fresh Home mag. It wasn't to bad but I wasn't throughly impressed. lol Guess I'm to picky and also spoiled with the Country Home Etc. (Patiently waiting for Ki's magazine with my arms crossed and patting my foot. lol) It has a few cute ideas. One was on cushions/pillows and another for using the silver tea strainer balls in your shower or bathroom. Also had some ideas/pics on different chandiliers that were pretty. Only found 1 page for yardsale/fleamarkets ideas and it was giving you advice on how to go to sales i.e. take plenty change, carrying water, that type of thing. Which being veteran junkies we already know that!!! lol But,if you're really handy with a saw and drill and are into making like tables etc its gots the instructions on how to make a really cute kitchen cart and a picnic type table. I don't think I got my $4.99's worth but I took a chance. I may would buy 1 more issue just to make sure they just didn't have an "off" issue. There's only 4 issues a year - each season and its published by Reader's Digest. If anybody wants my copy I'll be more than glad to send it to you. Just let me know. :) Hope all is well in your alls neck of the woods. :) Lisa
Posted 3 years ago # -
Hey Lisa, I did a google search for that new one and found that their charter subscription is only $10 right now. I also did a google search for reviews on the mag and I wasn't really impressed with the reviews. Bummer.
Does anyone receive emails from Country Home? I'm still on their email list and get them about once a week. Their website is still up and running and does have a lot of repeat stuff and projects. It helps for a fix for me every now and the if I don't want to pull my old copies of CH out. Might help you gals jonesing for a fix!

You will love our new magazine! This topic is great! I will share your thoughts with Matthew...you can help us to make Flea Market Style better than any magazine on the shelves! We are starting a blog this month just for the mag and will let you know as soon as it goes up! The photos so far are magnificent. The stories are fun and informative and of course the projects are fresh and new! I can't wait! I know you will love it!
Peace,
KiPosted 3 years ago # -
Ki - just keep putting out the little gumdrops to entice us! You know you'll have lots of followers because you know what most of us drool over. Looking forward to the blog as well as the magazine. I do satisfy some of my hunger for junk by reading others' blogs! Thanks for that bit of info and for thinking of all of us while compiling the new magazine!

Can't wait for the new magazine and blog to come out! What a shame the selection has changed so much, even in the gardening ones...never see anything new anymore. Thank goodness for my collection of books and my stash of "favorite" magazines!
Posted 3 years ago # -
One thought comes to mind about decorating/project magazines - I wish they wouldn't waste so much space on recipes! There are plenty of other magazines for that. I don't want to cook, I want to be inspired to paint and sew and decorate and go garage saling and flea marketing! I don't want to think about food, I want to think about COOL STUFF!! Just my opinion, of course.
Carol
Posted 3 years ago # -
Or maybe it's garage sailing that I want to do...
Posted 3 years ago # -
Me, too...I don't want a magazine that spends too much time on cooking. I think that's why I've never been fond of Martha Stewart's magazine (as well as other reasons that I won't elaborate on!!) because she has so much on food and stuff. Here's what I want: I want a magazine that shows common people how to take common goodies that we find on our haunts and show us ways to use them in real houses...it's that simple...and KI CAN DO IT LIKE A PRO...so RAH RAH RAH!!
Posted 3 years ago # -
yes- I agree, I don't mind a couple recipes but when 1/3 of the magazine is devoted, then that seems a bit much... we are buying/subscribing because of all the ideas to reuse and recycle.
I'm still so surprised that with the way the economy is right now, there aren't more magazines out there pushing and showing people how to reuse and rescue from garage sales, tag sales, auctions, or flea markets. I would think that at this point in the economy status it would work. I stopped at a thrift store the other day and it was PACKED with people... everyone is tightening their wallets these days...
but then, maybe they wouldn't want to splurge on a $5.00 magazine to tell them how to use the stuff they find.
In any case, I commend Matthew and Ki for giving us something to look forward too, can't wait to see the blog and magazine!
Posted 3 years ago # -
I want Ki's new magazine TODAY! Yeah, you would think more people would be into this type of magazine, but I think the biggest problem is the money it probably (well, for sure) takes to publish ANY type of magazine. At any rate...I'm just anxiously awaiting the new one!

I just got a copy of Romantic Country (Bedrooms addition) It is great. I havn't enjoyed a mag. like this in a long time. It's getting me excited for next yrs shop opening...

Just bought a copy of 100 ideals Flea Market Style. It has several neat things...The color of the front got my attention. it's so springy...
Posted 1 year ago # -
lately there have been a number of flea market type decor magazines - something in each I guess.
Posted 1 year ago # -
True...I seen another with flea market on front. But this one caught my eye...
Posted 1 year ago # -
I appreciate "Flea Market Style" in many, many ways. One of the most important is the density of content. So many magazines have "filler" with big graphics and clever displays. I find myself hearing actress Clara Pellar's (sp?) voice asking, "Where's the Beef?"
Posted 1 year ago # -
It would be interesting to do a page count on content - a bit hard when you are standing in the grocery store though. I'm thinking you are right though.
Posted 1 year ago # -
I hate that too McNaughton. Or getting home and realizing it is what I call a Frankenstein magazine..lots of articles and photos I have already seen in other magazines. I really dislike all the drug ads. I go through and just tear them all out if I can do it without losing anything..there are usually 2 pages of horrible possible side effects!
Posted 1 year ago # -
I found a new magazine at my local grocery store the other day called Vintage Style. Doesn't have directions but has some cute project ideas. My daughter bought it so I am waiting to borrow hers.
