Hello everyone! I am new here and just joined but have been reading for a few weeks. I picked up this great old suitcase today for $3. I am wondering what all the straps and snap closures are for on the inside? Anyone have any idea or any idea how old it is?

    Thank you!

Welcome Meagan... What a neat find...Don't know anything about old suitcases, and that they are holders for things...I just wanted to welcome you aboard...

  3. Welcome to the Revolution, Megan and thanks for the pictures. My uneducated guess would be that it might be some type of traveling bar or traveling salesman's case. Sure is dandy though and a great price!

Thanks for the welcome! I am so glad to have found this site. I came across the "Junk Beautiful" book at the library a few weeks ago and somehow found myself here after searching online about the book.

Since I am only 23 I don't know anyone else who likes "junk" as much as me and everyone else here so I am even more excited about finding this community. I am a long time estate sale/barn sale lover and am glad to see that I am not the only one who likes to buy what most people over look.

I never would have thought about the suitcase being from a salesman. That is a great suggestion-the straps look so custom, like they were made for specific items. I can only imagine who had it and how it was used before.

The flat long one on the right hand top corner is to hold a comb-the large and small ones on the left top is for a hand mirror-the large center onr is for a hairbrush-and the other 2 held jars for powder or something of that sort. I have a small version of this with all of the parts. Your find is in fantastic condition!

megan! i'm also 23 and also know nobody who obsesses over junk like I do! and i have a junk beautiful magazine which is what i typed into my search engine when i ended up here! haha too funny. don't tell me you are living in british columbia?? no, that would be too fluky. so jealous of your suitcase find, i have been keeping my eyes peeled for one like this to make a side table out of (i swear the suitcase=sidetable concept was my original idea!!) i've been looking for years for just the right kind, one with character, unique and custom. lucky you, got it right there in your hands! put it to good use!

Glad you joined us Meagan. That suitcase is great! And it's awesome to have younger gals like yourself and DIYlicious that understand the true beauty of junk. Of course I'm probably the youngest on this board. I'm only 12 and 1/4 'course I was born on Leap Year Day LOL!

    Hi Meagan,
Welcome! I love those old suitcases, too. You got a beauty. Post your pics after you transform it into a table.

    Meagan...
First, nice find for 3 bucks! The item is from around the mid to upper 1940's. Quite an "in-demand" piece actually. It is a ladies "train case", also called a "carry-on", or "carry-on train case". The straps are to hold a mirror, hair brush, comb, cologne container, cold cream, powder, etc., and any other make-up items a woman may use. I have two of these cases as collectibles. Enjoy it, it's gorgeous!

    Don

Welcome to the Revolution Don, you seem to have some knowledge about vintage suitcases. I'm sure Meagan will appreciate your input.
Stop by the "House Warming Party" thread and introduce yourself.
