Was inspired recently to put together some garden art. I plan on giving all way except for one of each that I'll put in my own garden. The anglefood cake pan on a stick will be used as a bird bath this year but may be changed to a planter next year to hold hanging flowers. The other is the vase (also on a stick) with the paper weight. JH came up with the idea of using the paper weight while we were scouring a flea market for tea pots and such to glue on top. The possibilites are endless-use your imagination. I can't take credit for these as I was inspired by items I saw at a May Fair and a "French Flea Market".

  2. Very cute and clever! I especially love the last pic with all the variations of objects on bud vases. Such a great way to get rid of unwanted chippy glass. Thanks for sharing with us! Jan

Thanks ladies. I was amazed at all the garden art at the "French Flea Market" since it was in a ladies back yard with lots of gardens, garden paths and of course-garden junk. She had it set up so artfully. My Aunt and friend toured the garden and loved everything. Then the fun part began--searching for the right items. It was such a blast. Anything is possible!!

Those are fantastic! Are those door knobs on the angel food cake pan? I have a ton of odd glass pieces. What kind of glue did you use? I tried a cup and saucer with gorilla glue, but it didn't stick. :>(

Pic #1-I used a tapered spindle. Placeing the angelfood cake pan on till it snug then sawed off the top part. Had JH drill out a small hole to place the glass knob in. I used gorilla glue on this. It is held in the ground with a piece of rebar. JH drilled a hole in the bottom to place it in.

Pice #2-Any type of glass ware can be used. I used "Goop" to hold together. Don't forget to read directions--lost one while moving--glue still wet and vase fell off. This glue is water resistant so it should hold.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  9. Try quick grip adhesive too. It is weatherproof and waterproof and holds up in our heat just fine. I find it in the craft glue section at our local WM. Can't live without it here! Jan

  15. I am in the process of making one of the garden sticks from a few pieces of stray glass I got at the thrift store this afternoon. Will post when it is complete...that is if it doesn't look too hideous! Jan

  16. Awe- you guys missed me! *blush*

Unfortunately I've been so busy with kids ball games (at least 3 a week) my husband is busy with school (trying to make life easier on him)and two kids birthday's this month...

I literally go from work to ball games to bed... so I've had very little time to browse and talk... let alone have fun playing with junk!!! I can't wait until life slows down!!!

It better soon... I'm suppose to organize a flea market 7/11 and be in a garden show 7/25!!!

SO- everyone keep playing and creating... I'll try to make it back more often. Lovin all the ideas!!!

  17. Oh, wow, that sounds very TIRING to me! Sometimes you feel so blessed to be tugged in so many ways but then again...

Jan - can't wait to see your garden art! Good Luck!

  21. Thanks! Sorry for the bluebird's butt turned wrong for the pic. The wind was blowing this morning and I was afraid it would fall over. This totem consists of a white bud vase, blue candleholder, a jar with flat marbles and the little blue bird of happiness plopped on top...he was sitting in my booth going no where! DH is getting into the swing of helping me so maybe I can get some others done by the weekend. This is a great way to get rid of unwanted glass and right now you can't give it away in a booth down here! Jan

    Posted 4 years ago #
  22. You know I thought several times I would like to make totems. I look at the peices and think, hummm that doesn't look to hard...Well... When I get to a place that has glass stuff I can't remember what it is I need...Guess I need to write things down...Can anyone tell me the main peices you need...Oh Jan your peices look pretty...

    Posted 4 years ago #
  23. Leveta -Just use your imagination when you see a large piece and pick up others to see if they will work with it. You can use a large compote turned upside down and start stacking away until you find the right mix of glassware. Also bud vases are so cheap too and a great way to get rid of them. I play with so many pieces and don't glue it until I am positive it is what I want to use. I am learning to glue in phases and not rush things. I let each addition dry overnight...DH says I get in too big of a hurry...but heck I want it done right now...LOL. Jan

I too get in a hurry to have it done NOW! Lost a bud vase that way. I've learned to be patient. JH went to SA today and picked up more pieces to make what my sisters call "vase on a stick". Guess he has the fever too!! LuAnn

  26. JAN - I just saw your totems on your blog and I JUST LOVE THEM. The colors are just so pretty together and you should be proud!

  27. Thanks! During this awful heat it is giving me a project to do inside...lol ! I am working on several others and hope to post pictures of them by the weekend. Jan

  28. What do you use to glue?? There are so many people useing different glues now it confusing...

    Posted 4 years ago #
  29. Leveta - I am using that Quick Grip I mentioned in another post that holds up very well in our weather down here. It is waterproof too which helps. I am learning to be patient in between gluing the pieces together. Also having fun with this project and creating the totems. Jan

  31. I just finished another one and letting it dry overnight before posting a picture of it. It has 7 different pieces of glass glued together so I don't want to take any chances. This project is so much fun and VERY addictive! Thanks for posting your pics earlier this week. I am going to use a couple for Christmas gifts and hope I remember where I place them in the house...LOL ! Thanks! Jan

  33. I think LuAnn has started something with all of us on these totems! They are so much fun to create. Now to figure out how to sell them. Jan

  34. This is the second garden totem I have made this week. I used 7 pieces of glass on it. The little blue glass squirrel was residing in a booth in our mall with no home so now he is perched on top of the totem. I am thinking of putting both in the booth for $ 9.95 each as shipping will be somewhat difficult due to their size and also they weigh about 4 pounds each! Now I want to try one with a plate as the base and go up from there! Why do I allow myself to become addicted to projects! Right now I am enjoying getting rid of unwanted glassware. Jan

  35. Oh, Jan, I really like this one too! I thought of you while at a garage sale yesterday. I bought a clear aqua glass kitten that I plan to put on top of a garden totem. I need to find the rest of the stuff for the totem! Do you just buy randomly or do you buy what "speaks" to you and kind of design it while you're junk shopping? Does that make sense?

I guess is what I'm asking is do you just buy up the cheap glass items, put them all out in front of you and then pick what will go on what totem? Or, do you buy cheap glass items - but building it in your head and looking for specific colors, etc.?

    Sue

    Posted 4 years ago #
  36. I build as I am shopping and make sure all the pieces will fit together and look halfway decent. Chips don't bother me at all either as long as they aren't too big. I try to work colors together and also get enough "finds" to do more than one totem. I am in love with these little cuties and can't seem to quit making them right now. I love to find a particular piece that speaks to me and go from that one piece with the rest of the glass for the totem too. These become definately a OOAK original when complete. I am thinking they will make great Christmas gifts for my junking and gardening friends this year. I am going to work on a pink one next and hopefully she will have a sweet pink victorian figurine in part of the totem....getting brave now...LOL ! Can't wait to see what you create. Be sure and share pics with us. Jan

These seem to have really taken off. I'm glad you all are enjoying putting these together. I try to create one at a time unless I can find a few vases real cheap and then scour for the items for the top. I even have the JH looking for items. I gave my "vase on a stick" to my sisters and mother earlier this week. They were all thrilled. Each cost me less than $3.00 each!! Not bad for gifts. Let's see more--such creativity on this site! 39. I just came home from 2 thrift shops here in town with a load of mismatched items for more totems and even a couple more cup/saucer bird feeders on vases. Will post as soon as they are completed. Thanks LuAnn for sharing this idea with us and getting me & Sue hooked on it! Jan

  47. I got some of that quick grip stuff also today...I still have to get some flower vases. I got some clear coffee glasses also but couldn't find clear saucers unless they were like 2.00 apiece or so. So I found some clear star candleholders and I think they will work fine...I have a secret summmer junk friend on another site and I got to get something together for her by July 1st....

    Posted 3 years ago #
  48. LOL okay you guys (Jan in particular) - ya'll had me looking at glass pieces ALL week-end long! Everytime I would see a glass something or another, or a flower vase, I would think..."Jan needs this", or "Sue needs this piece"...Sue, I think I saw the dog that goes with the kitten. LOLOLOL

    Posted 3 years ago #
  49. Love these. I've been buying old odds and ends for a LONG time. Just waiting for inspiration...you all are it!
    Now--more questions--
How do you display these to sell them?
Do you include a sign to explain what they are?
Do you sell also the rebar or whatever you are using to stake it in the ground with?
I've made the birdfeeders out of teacups that are already mounted on rebar and very difficult to display.
Thanks to you all for sharing all your projects!

to display those items mounted on rebar or a post - just place some sand in a bucket or large tub and you can place them right in the sand to hold them up.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  51. DH has "loaned" me a blue plastic milk crate that turned upside down will allow the square holes to be on top and I am going to use dowels and rebar but price it separate from the totems. I am going to put 3 or 4 at a time in the booth and pray none of the "loose kids" will break them. I am also list a few on Etsy and not ship the stake/rebar with them....they can easily find these at the hardware store. I found rebar (36" tall) for 99 cents Sat. at the hdwr store. It was unplated but I can clear kote it or paint to get rid of the rust....it's really bad and leaves your hands very rusty! I plan on making some free standing towers this week and will post pics of them next. Our thrift store sells dinner plates, vases, cups, c'holders, etc for 25 to 50 cents each! Even large glass globes are 50 cents. I will take a pic of the display once I get it set up in the booth...hopefully his "creation" will work too! Jan

  53. For my Teacup birdfeeders on poles(painted PVC) my DH took heavy square pieces of wood and drilled holes in them to stand my feeders up in to display them...

  54. Maggie - we need to find some sort of "junking" show close by and set up to see if we can market our garden totems, bird cup feeders and other junk! We are working on having one at a friend's place in the country before summer ends and a bunch of us set up to sell. Plan on advertising it well too!
Laveta - I just found a wire cage shelf I removed from the booth when I downsized and I think it will work fine too! Going to give it a rip anyway. Stay cool....already over 90 down here...yuck ! Jan

  56. Hopefully we can work on getting things organized in July and hopefully set it up late July or early August. I have tons of stuff to get rid of too. Even discovered a vintage 2 wheel garden cart behind the storage building...now that's embarrassing! I think we will try it on a Sat. since so many folks work too. Going to gear it towards junk to repurpose and such....no garage sale stuff. Will keep you posted on it. Would love to meet you too. We need to hit up at some auctions close by too. Jan

  59. I put the 2 garden totems posted earlier in the booth yesterday. DH put together a cube shelf to display them in and it works just fine. I will take pics of it today when I run out and put the 2 cup bird feeders in there. In the meantime, DH designed a free standing garden totem and when finished it will resemble the Seattle space needle (his wording). I am so glad he enjoys helping me create stuff. We should have it finished by this evening so it can dry overnight and I can put it in the booth tomorrow. Gee LuAnn you sure know how to "hook" folks on projects but a BIG thank you for showing the totems to us. Jan

    Posted 3 years ago #
  60. This is the display DH made for my booth to hold the garden totems and tea cup birdfeeders. It is actually sturdy and is 4 rows deep which holds the dowel sticks just fine. I had previously used the entire shelving to hold handmade candles in vintage glassware. It was a thrift store find for $ 2.00 last fall ! I priced the garden totems $ 10 with a dowel stick and the birdfeeders $ 6.00 with the dowel stick. Let's hope they will sell ! Jan

the teacup birdfeeders are very pretty. Those are very reasonable prices so they should be snapped up quickly. Great gift item! I see you have some old dishes. You might try planting 2 or three floral dishes in the background of a window box with several petunias. I had some large sea shells -fan shaped-also and planted them in a window box and they are cute.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  65. I am hoping that batch of old floral dishes will soon find a new home. The booth is now downsized and I am hoping lots more items will move on too! I found lots of pretty floral teacups today in an antique mall in our town and most were less than a $ 1.00 so that will help with profit IF they will sell. People in our area are slow to "get it" on vintage finds and decorating which makes it frustrating for us sellers. Guess it goes with the territory! They wouldn't touch anything rusty on a bet....might get their pretty manicured hands a little dirty! Jan

  77. I been collecting lately but can't do anything cause DD's furiture is in my shop and it's been to hot and hummid do do anything...I'm getting so far behind I hope I have enought when my shop opens in sept...I wish I lived closer too...

  78. It has been extremely hot and humid down this way. I wish fall would be right around the corner with cooler temps! I just love the crisp smell of pumpkins and falling leaves. How are your gourds and pumpkins coming along? Be sure and post pics for us when you make all your cute projects. Thanks! Jan

  79. Magark how long do you let the quick grip cure?? And do you pull on it to see how well it's holding? If it gives what do you do, put more on it and let it sit again??

    Posted 3 years ago #
  80. It doesn't take much to get it to grip. I just run a small bead around the area I want to glue and pull it apart a couple of times and let it cure overnight. More or less follow the directions on the tube and so far it has held for me. Once it starts setting up do not pull it apart or anything like that....leave it alone and it should cure just fine for you. When it is hot and humid (like down here) I apply the glue inside and let it cure in the house. It doesn't smell like most glues either. Even DH is now hooked on using the stuff for his catfishing noodles and it holds super good in the water. Good luck! Let me know if I can help further. Jan

    Posted 3 years ago #
  81. OH now you tell me not to pull while it's curing...LOL I did just that last night. It seem all tight EXCEPT where I pulled it. Should I add a bit around the area?? And Thanks for your help...

  85. Laveta - you only pull on the glue after applying if you want it to set a lot quicker....otherwise let it do its own thing. So far I have had good luck with all my projects holding together with the adhesive. I won't be without it around here! Jan

    Posted 3 years ago #
  86. I reglued where it came apart. This time I won't touch it till it set. I glued a star candle holder upside down and only had the tips of the points to glue and it seem to have held so...So if will hold that tiny bit securely then i'm sold...

  88. Happy Fourth!!! Jan - I swapped my e6000 (that doesn't hold well in high heat - and man, it is HOT!!!) for the quick grip! I have used it on a couple of belt buckles and brooches - I am loving it! THANK YOU so much!!!!!!!!

  91. I found it in the craft section with the glue at our WM. It is in a green and yellow tube and little goes a long way. I have followed the directions on the tube and so far everything is holding up just fine in all this HEAT down here...bring on some rains! We have been 21 days without any decent rains and everything is getting nice and brown! Of course we are watering and the city is loving our bill ! Good luck with the quick grip!

Oh I'm glad you posted about the E6000 I too have been collecting glass pieces and probably would have used the E6000 I looked for the quick grip at my local Ace Hardware, apparently Ace ISN"T the place like they claim :)I'll be sure to look at WM next time I'm there. Thanks for the heads up and for preventing a big oops!

By the way I was at the local farm market today and saw a gal with glass totems. She was asking $60.00 a piece. That's all she had in her space and I didn't think they were as nice as some of the ones you gals have posted here. Don't have a clue if she sold any or not, seemed way too pricey IMHO

Yeah, I was tempted to go back at the end of the day and ask her how many she sold :) Of course maybe the joke would be on me. Hmmm? Maybe I'd better get a move on collecting glass pieces LOL

  96. I have managed to sell 2 from my booth. Actually one was a teacup bird feeder and the other was a garden totem. I sell the birdfeeders for $ 6.00 and the totems for $ 10.00. This terrible heat we have been enduring down here has really hurt our shoppers at the mall. Who in blue blazes wants to get out when it is 100+ outside...not me! My SIL is at their summer home in Estes Park CO and it is raining and 54...Go Away! LOL ! Hope the quick grip will work for everyone or I may have to eat my words. Keep me posted! Jan

  98. Leveta,

I would add something colorful on the plate around the cup since you want to put a candle in there. Like colored glass stones, or maybe something like a candle ring of flowers or greenery???

Leveta, I love the clear glass with the teacups. They're not plain they'll look great with candles flickering in them. Keep up the good work. Diane

Leveta, those totems are fabulous! I think the candles would be 'dressy' enough without adding anything else.

I live in Central Texas and it has been 100 or more for the last week. And not a drop of rain! It rains around us, just not ON us. lol

I have a couple of teacup birdfeeders in my booth and not a one has sold. Prices range from $15 to $18, depending on how much I had to pay for the cups and saucers. I've seen them in Salado for $25, so I thought my price was on target. Maybe I need to rethink that and lower the price! Mine are rather labor intensive...I drill holes in the cup and saucer, use a threaded rod to run through them, nuts and washers to attach, then finish them off with some silicone to make the cups hold water.

  101. Thanks for your thoughts...The one thing I did wrong is glue the saucers on wrong...DUH!!! Cowplace I made teacup feeders last yr for my shop. Some that hung and some on a pole that I painted copper. I had I think 8.00 or 6.00 0n the hanging and 10.00 on the pole. Only sold one and gave one to my DH's aunt for making my wreaths and things to do with flowers. This yr I'm going to advertise more. I also sell pumpkins, gourds and indian corn and fall decorations...I'm glad to have you with us...

These are great. I love them the way they are. I'm participating in a "junk in your trunk" sale. I plan on making some of these to sell. I'll let you know how well they do. LuAnn

  103. Laveta - You did a great job on both projects! Congrats! I added a small bag of birdseed to my teacup feeders but they could also line a garden path with a tealight candle in them too. Your totems with the angels on top are so cute! Give yourself a big "atta girl" pat on the back for these! Jan

  104. Thank you guys...LuAnn I hope you have a great selling day...Can't wait to hear how you do. Magark Thanks, I also put birdfeed in a little taille(sp)bundle and also add a cute little poem that I tie on the handle...I had a pretty little balarina(sp) for on top one and my little GD daw it and was like awww baby, so I let her carry it around and she broke it...OH Well...I want to know if there is more I can do to make them more sellable...

  105. I think they are cute just like you have them now. I also did like you and put a cute poem with mine too. Good luck selling them and keep me posted. Just keep thinking outside the box with your creations. Hope you sell them all ! Jan

Leveta, you did a good job on them! Like the others said, I don't think they need anything added to them.

Leveta, I think just adding a candle to the tea cups would be sufficient. Sometimes less is more. I think they look very elegant. but if you think they're too plain maybe a handful of those flat glass marbles on the saucers would give you what you're looking for, You did a fine job, pat yourself on the back.

  110. First of all magark THANK YOU!!! for telling about Quick Grip...I love it...Now this may sound like a stupid question...But you know me by now...I couldn't remember if I read it here or on another site, about the clear glass totems maybe causeing a fire cause of the suns magnafication through the glass...I was wondering if you got patio paint and maybe painted the underside of a piece or 2 of it...

    Posted 3 years ago #
  111. I haven't heard anything about that but often you read about sun rays and magnifying glass causing fires on desk tops when the sun shines through. I too love the quick grip and glad it is working for you. Not sure about painting glass but I don't see why it wouldn't work with glass paint. Anyone else know the answer? Jan

  116. Debapaka inverted bowl, meaning upside down?? Would have to be pretty small bowl??

    Posted 3 years ago #
  117. That's very cute! What is under the saucer holding up the tea cup?
Is it all glued together? That would make a cute gift
    christinescottagegardenhome.blogspot.com

    Posted 3 years ago #
  118. Yes, it is glued all together, the bowl is small and has a scalloped edge sort of like a flower.
I made similar one for my niece a couple of years ago, it was very colorful.

Well ladies, I have spent the better part of the day looking at the snow outside and going thru the garden section here and this post seems to be the most talked about. Anyone making any new totems? I try really hard not to complain about the weather but I think I'm coming down with the blahs and what I want is spring fever. Any new garden ideas? :) Diane
