what do you think of gifting finds? I thought I would be on the look out for some special finds for gifts this year. I would not pretend it was new: but find things that added to their collections and interests.

I've done this before but to only friends "who understand" what junk is all about.

I think it's a great idea!!! If it is someone that is not a seasoned junker, I put some idea sheets and other odds 'n ends in with the find - otherwise, those who know me know that I bring them....junk. LOLOL
Posted 4 years ago # -
I only do it for those who love it like I do and I still only give something that I picked up FOR them not just something I happen to have.

I think it's a great idea if you know that the person will "get it".
Had a secret pal one time at work and she LOVED having me as a pal. I got old rusted city car tags and all kinds of neat stuff! LOL

I think I'm going to make stick totems for gifts for some of our kids...

I love gifting to my SIL and my husband's cousin. They are both me helping at Bonanza, so they will each get a goodie bag of junk when we get there. I gave ONLY vintage/junk stuff to my SIL for Christmas last year -- an egg basket, set of red bakelite silverware w/red wooden tray, Dick & Jane book. I have also given her and my niece vintage quilts.

Janelle...Can I be your SIL too? LOL

That's a funny post, yesterday my sister-in-law, mother-in-law , husband and myself had a booth at an Herb Fest. We were shopping each other's stuff! So I think gifting would be a great idea... in fact, I think I'm going to mention it for our family Christmas... we usually don't exchange gifts... but I'd so rather give my SIL the trunk she likes, than have her pay me for it! (especially when I got it for $5.00!)

Hey Hillbilly, I love that idea, I wish ALL of my family liked junk! We could have a "Very Junky Christmas!" :-) I love doing the shopping for my SIL every year. I usually have all of my shopping done for her and my niece done early because I find so many great things all year! I forgot - another thing that I gave my niece last year was an old doll bed that I got for $10 at an auction. It was painted kind of mustard yellow, so I found some fabric at hobby lobby that matched it and made a new blanket to go with it. I am trying to start her young on appreciating junk - can't wait to start taking her to flea markets and auctions with us!

I have been trying to post a message for about a half hour now. It says I posted, but I see nothing...so, if I pop up here about a dozen times...it is a computer glitch and I apologize. It did this once before on here. I must have had 10 posts of the same subject!

I don't think anyone in my family or husband's expects "off the shelf" gifts from me anymore! I do buy gifts from stores, but I so often find perfect gifts for family.
In a consignment store this summer, I found a funky, high-style black bowl for a wedding gift for a modernistic couple. They loved it.
When my best friend turned 30, I gave her a heavy pink depression glass bowl...a rare pattern (I found out later)...for under ten dollars. I told her that, at thirty, she was quickly becoming an antique.
I found a book my father-in-law had once read and has been searching for at a yard sale this spring...great Father's Day gift. Let's not forget the ties from the Goodwill with the tags still on them for Christmas.
Wreaths on my mother-in-law's french doors came from a flea market.
Oh, and her huge floral picture behind her couch(mathces her couch, too)...a literal bargain basement sale item from a local furniture store. The glass was gone but it was an oil painting...didn't need the glass. $10.00!!!!! Been there for three years, now.
I did sully my reputation this summer. My best friend's daughter got married this July. True to my budget-minded nature, I shopped Goodwill for a dress that would suit an elegant evening wedding. I found a sequined pantsuit for $3.50. When I tried the suit on, the night before the wedding, my husband said I looked like I belonged to Ringling Brothers and should be taming lions. In a desperate attempt to prove "the clown" wrong, I sent the photo to my family members...who AGREED!!! RATS!
Sometimes buying cheap, can make you look...well, cheap.
PS. I gathered the fragments of my shattered pride, went to a real department store the next day, and bought a suitable dress. Great news, though! It was on the 80% off rack!!! Life is good.

The attachment photo only lacks a chair...and a perhaps and lion or two.

My cousin got married a few weeks ago and I gave vintage dishes. Both him and especially his new wife are into retro type things; Marylin monroe, pin-up style art, etc. So I gave them a green Pyrex dish with a floral lid in perfect condition. I also gave them a Glasbake green daisy dish with lid and 4 milk glass custard cups with daisies on them. It was a cute "themed" gift, or at least I thought so. ha ha. Personally I think it is better to give something unique and different-something no one else will get them and it will be a surprise. It's obvious too, with gifts like this that you put some thought into it and didn't just pick something off of a list.

We used to have a rule at our family Christmas (4 sisters and hubbies) that gifts had to be from a garage sale and $10 or under. We drew names (guys and gals in separate drawing). We fudged somewhat on the $10 but you wouldn't believe the stuff we got. We would have a whole box full of "gifts" from the person who got our name. One year one of the guys even got a live rooster! We had the best time--lots of great memories.

That is such a neat ideal...Love the live rooster too...

Welcome to the Revolution Waffle! Great ideas for vintage wedding gifts!
Greta - I'm ROTFLMBO! I'm sorry, but I have to agree with your family on the Ringling Brothers outfit. I'm glad that you were able to find a great deal on a quick stand-in! Did I mention that I'm still ROTFLMBO!!!!

Sue,
I am just glad that my family's voice of reason stopped me before my frugality turned into reputational FATALITY!!!! Oh, and my family had a very similar response to the photos that you did. It may take a while before I live this one down!! HEE HEE

OMGosh....I had to go look at the pic.....now I am ROTFLMBO!!

I just seen the pic, how I missed it I don't know...I can see where it might not fit a wedding but I like it...A black jacket and I think it would be cute...

Greta - You've got a good family backing you up. Now, my sister's family would find that outfit very fitting for formal affairs. In fact, it might be too dressy for some of their tastes. I think my sister might be a long lost relative of Hillbillies and Redneckchic (only there's nothing chic about their tastes!) You might have gotten a few offers on your dance card that night!

well Sue, yes... I did think Greta's outfit was something I would wear to the Governor's Ball since you brought it up... that is, if he ever invited me... ;)

A few offers on my dance card!!! Sue, you crack me up! You definitely know your history. You either read a lot or watch old movies! My husband had the same thoughts as you.
What's a cheap-o to do? It's in my blood. Paying hard-earned money for a one- time event seems frivolous!
My sister had a husband whose father and brother wore camouflage to our Grandpa's funeral. Operative word being "had".
I am thankful that there was a sale at a...(gulp)...reputable department store.
Am I the only one of us Junksters who made an OCCASIONAL WEAR
FAUX PAS?I know there must be stories out there--lovely ladies of good standing whose LOVE OF THRIFT got the better of them!
Fess up Girls! Ha Ha

blossom lane after seeing you stuff i would not want something off the shelf i would feel like it would not mean as much

Kim - PALEASE let me know if you get the invite to the Governor's ball - I'd LOVE to see the pictures! Hehehe.
Now Greta - I am completely with you when it comes to being thrifty (even) for a one-time event. I rarely buy something new - and IF I do, I never pay full price - you did well by finding an outfit on sale. Although I don't have to, I prefer to purchase my clothing at thrift stores. Call me a fool, but a often find things with the tags still on them. I think it's been about 2 or 3 years since I've bought jeans band new. I would much rather find brand names that have already been washed a couple of times. Then I know if the length is going to be long enough (I have a 31 inseam and I'm only 5'4" and if the waste is going to feel ok being that I'm short waisted. I just like broken in jeans dang it!
Oh, yea - on the dance card thing - I guess I've seen a few oldies and definitely have read a lot of older genre books. An old work buddy even wrote a few romance novels and surely mentioned the dance card thing in one or two I think. I completely understand the camouflage thing your sister's ex (I can read between your lines!) had going on. That's how my sister's ex-husband's family dressed for the wedding & reception and I'm not kidding. I think that they even paired camouflage with leopard print and again, I'm not kidding.
When it comes to blouses, I tend to bring home stuff that really makes me look OLD (well, older than I really am or older than I feel anyway). My husband is very kind and loving when he suggests that I put that kind of stuff in the church rummage sale. Hmmmm, whatever does he mean by that?!?!

Sue,
I was thinking today of the last time I was at the downtown mall. It has been a long time. I can't say as I miss it.
I have always bought second hand clothing ....especially church dresses for my daughter...more so when she was younger.
Now, I find most of my daughter's clothes at yard sales.
About 85% of my wardrobe is second hand!
You read older genre books. I knew it! I have a hardbound volume of Jane Austen's complete works. I have read "Emma", "Pride and Prejudice", and "Sense and Sensibilty" this year.
I read "Gone with the Wind" over the winter and was completely impressed by the amount of real history Margaret Mitchell included in her novel. The history itself is intriguing.
I read "The Scarlett Letter" because my son had to read it this year...he is a junior. I am total lit. junkie and love to help my kids see the truth the author intends to impart in their work.
I am onto the Bronte sisters now. I loved Charlotte's "Jane Eyre". Now, I am onto Emily's "Wuthering Heights". A tad too dark for me, so far. We'll see.
I collect primers and all kinds of old childrens' books. Have many antiques in my collection. I read them. They are incredibly refreshing!
Oh, about your blouses. I make blouse faux pas all the time. What is it with these shirts that make me look 3 months pregnant? You have to be rail thin to pull off that style. Many trends in shirts are so unflattering for the average middle age woman.
I have this love for "jackets"; the denim or corduroy kind that are light weight. Winters in Kentucky aren't usually unbearably cold, so I wear a Goodwill-purchased jacket just about daily. Over the past couple years, I have accumulated quite a collection. My other love is boots. Just the side zip kind typically, but I am always on the hunt for colors I don't have. (I like them to match my jackets!)
When I wear my pink hiking boots (Nope, no matching jacket..yet.)...my husband always makes a comment. I have a sneaky feeling that he may think they may make me look...too young...like a third grader in her Stride Rites. Men!

I received a wedding invitation with a card inside informing of the couple's registries. For this I do intend to purchase a new item, but I would like it to be both useful and perhaps become an heirloom. For a while I gave cash for weddings, but then I got some thank you's that said "it would come in handy" or "we used it for our honeymoon in Hawaii." ( I have gotten some thank you's written in the mother's or an aunt's handwriting or in a couple instances none at all.) I guess I wanted to hear they were putting it towards some home furnishings, though I know gifting does not truely attach strings. The girls are all been lovely, but as I browse their lists, I see expensive sheets and cameras, luggage, and barware. On the other hand, rather inexpensive pots and pans and stainless...Then I see that the sites have ways for the brides to manage their lists and see how they are being fulfilled...I'm going for a nice surprise. p.s. I know full well if and when my daughter marries she will do the same and its practical to get the things you really need and will use, but still...
