I know there's lots of natural ways to ward off/kill nasty bugs...without causing harm to your pets and other things like butterflies, etc and also things that help your plants/flowers grow better......like egg shells, beer, coffee grounds, etc

Mid-way thru growing (my hostas especially!) get attacked with the buggers and they eat huge holes in the leaves...I'm getting pretty tired of it, too!!

What's some of your best debugging and growing tips for some of us who haven't quite managed a green thumb but are somewhere along the lines of "chartruese" and working on it....lol :]

Sand, crushed egg shells, ashes from woodstove are just a few. spread it in a piled line around your hosta's. Snails are usually the culprets. I've heard beer in a bowl, they get in but can't get out. But then after being in the beer awhile they may not want to...lol If there are bugs on them I've always heard soap water in a spray bottle...

  3. Okay Gigi - I asked the lady that has a BRIGHT green thumb (a.k.a. my mother) LOL

    Here's what she said...

The holes in the leaves are caused by slugs….
SLUGGO is a poison that works well and doesn’t seem to hurt other things…..
Diatomaceous earth applied from an old spice container or sifter works pretty well too….
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth

Schultz sells a spray that is made from chrysanthmums. It is not poisonous to any good stuff…even people, but will take care of lots of undesirable plant bugs. It comes in a yellow spray bottle and can be found in nurseries as well as Wally World.

    I hope that helps!!!

Leveta...can i crawl in the bowl? LOLOLOL I'm going to park a bunch of beer bowls around my house and see how many snails I can send to AA...

  6. Your hosta look fabulous! That is what mine look like at the beginning of the growing season...then come the bunnies. Wonder if the beer would work on them or if I would just have drunk bunnies hopping crooked paths across my lawn. Seriously, they chew my hosta to the ground. Some of my hosta have thrown in the towel and just don't bother coming back. Sad. Any ideas?
    Peace,

your hostas are just beautiful, leveta.....i just love the deep, lush greens in these plants

(but to be honest...i really don't like when they begin to bloom and shoot wild all over the place..i'll leave the flowers show just a day or two and then out comes the handy-dandy shears and snip, they're gone...i'm a bad girl, i know!

I agree with you...I cut mine off to. It does put more strength into the plant when you cut them off...

  12. I've heard (and tried) using blood meal. Take an empty vegetable can - bury it up to about an inch from the open top near the plants you want to protect. Then fill it about 2/3 full of water and add a tablespoon or so of blood meal. (It's sold where fertilizers are sold.) It looks rather nasty - but should keep both bunnies and deer at bay. A few of these placed around a flower bed or garden should help.

Ki, my suggestion: "Embrace the bunnies." Let them eat and be merry! I have used beer for slugs. It's pretty gross going out early and dumping out cold, stale beer and drowned slugs. I always had to beat my golden retriever to it. Blagh!

maybe golden retriever was too tipsy to mind the slugs...sorta like a tequila worm!! haha...lol :)

the little buggers are starting to chew my leaves so i need to put something out...i can just envision my weiney dogs after inhaling beer filled slugs....sometimes it's hard to tell if they're walking or crawling as it is, now!!!
