I know I read somewhere on here that gel stain is used to make things look old, worn, etc. I was wondering what color and/or brand of gel stain has been used to achieve something like this. Thanks.

  2. The gel stain I have used is just a thick goopy version of stain...doesn't drip, I guess. I have found that you really need to use a wood conditioner before applying to bare wood or it gets really blotchy. Yuk. I wonder if they mean over paint? Maybe as antiquer...if so I suspect a dark walnut color would work best...you know, wipe on...wipe off. I like to use a tinted paste wax as an antiquer over paint because if I decide I don't like the look, it can be wiped off with Naptha. Was that that too much information?

Brown shoe polish works really well, too. I just get the plain old Kiwi polish in the tin. Once it's worked in, it doesn't seem to rub off.

Thanks everyone for your input - I never would have thought about shoe polish - that is clever! I ended up buying some Minwax gel stain in antique oak and it did the trick.

  7. I often use old stain over paint to "antique" it. Simply paint it on and rub it off. Don't let it sit too long. Give anything an aged look. You can rub off as much or little as you want to achieve the look. I have more stain laying around, than I do shoe polish :)
