Been thinking lots about my antique booth, my Barn Sales......my likes & inspiration. Each time I find my way back to Farmhouse Style. So what do you think of when you hear "farmhouse style"?

i like the sound of it...fresher than country or primitive...no baggage....when i hear country i have to think of geese and heart cut outs....
on the other side i dont quite have a good idea of what farmhouse style looks like...Posted 1 year ago # -
I think of the house in the Bridges of Madison County - kinda country, but mostly cottage-y? And another movie I think of is maybe Field of Dreams? {There are many period movies that I barely pay attention to the story because I am so distracted by the houses and the furnishings - same applies to old black & white shows like I Love Lucy and Ozzie & Harriet and Father Knows Best.... etc. I love TCM channel and all the 30's 40's 50's movies. Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House from 1948 is a favorite. I know most women are probably paying more attention to the fashions; not me...but the jewelry, yes.} Anyway, I think of movies with farmhouses and their inherent charm...

I too watch movies over and over just looking at the decorating. My ALL TIME favorite is "Practical Magic". Love the old house and how "white" was a theme through out even with all the "herbs".

Love Pratical Magic too with it's widow's walk, also, the house on the second version of 12 is enough where they take the lighthouse and turn it into a house. How about Hope Floats. That's a great old house too. I think fo farmhouse as nothing pretentious. Clean lines, real shutters, old wood cookstove, farmhouse sink with a curtain underneath and white curtains in the kitchen windows.

Is anyone else getting red pop ups in their post? They keep taking me to advertisements.

i use the term 'bohemian farmhouse' as my 'style' marker.....it includes farmhouse with a slight 'hippy' twist...
for me farmhouse is clean, fresh, white curtains hanging in chippy white wood window frames....white linens everywhere, perhaps red check in the kitchen, crocheted lace, old worn wood...actually old worn ANYTHING....old worn metal...
sorry, but NOT geese or heart cut outs...i agree that is the old school country and way out of style.

oh...an no to the pop ups...must be you...diane

the style i like is a mix of cottage, urban rustic, real primitives and metal..... thats whats selling here...i hope some word catches on to express it....
when i ask whats the difference between country and primitive....i never understand the replies... .... so i guess those words are pretty murky...
.also im suprised that a modern mag would pick the name folk..have you heard of it? i havent seen it yet but looking forward to it... ...folk art has such cut out hearts and geese and 90s crafty even nice grandma crafts roots.... dont get me wrong.... ...

To me farmhouse style is vintage, well loved, well used but clean and useful, white with red checkered, also roosters and cows come to mind. Primitive is old, chippy paint, rusty metal, dirty stained look, and black sanded and aged seems to be the main color. Sheep and crows seem to be animals that go with primitive. For country I also think of geese, heart cutouts, cloth dolls in sunflower dresses and pine wood. Cottage I think of white and roses. The style I like in my house and what sells for me I like to call Farmhouse Primitive.
Ann, What is urban rustic to you?

Also "farmhouse style" or "farm fresh" from the book "The Egg & I" by the Author Betty MacDonald and the movie starring Fred MacMurray & Claudette Colbert

DPumm--like how you described "farmhouse"-for me hit the nail on the head (except I'm not a fan of roosters or cows).
I rather think of my style as "Vintage meets Farmhouse meets Eclectic". Which to me means I use what I find and what I like--no real style. I like well worn pieces that "speak" to me.
Always been an original rather than practical kinda girl.

urban rustic to me is kind of spare and sparce......like maybe a huge farm table or work bench in a trendy loft space with only a few things on it....... maybe all neutral.... farm junk as art...lol...a massive wheel on the wall..a chandelier over a rustic table... with some industrial metal throwni in....and maybe some huge olive oil jars from eastern europe...
.we didnt mention shabby ,we did so well with shabby and it verges into cottage for sure..
. whats nice is all these trends are kind of casual and adventurous and reusing things from other times and intertwining.......and they all started imho....with country living mag which showed us how fun and beautiful and neat old farm junk and the common things from the past were, and how nice they could be in our homes..... that mag was a huge influence when we started our business in the late 70s.... back then good antiques were pressed glass and formal stuff.nothing like what counttry living showed... ...at first when we started the big thing was real primitives, then the crafters and china imports and collector things took it over...we purists hated that...lol...... so interesting!!!i remember a great national quilt dealer i used to sell to describing how she bought some of her first good quilts from antique guys using them for packing blankets at auctions.... it was just nothing at the start of the country trend....quilts were so hot for a decade or so!!!! one from our area brought 100K i knew the woman who found it...it sold to a japanese bank in the 80s...

I am putting the finishing touches on preparation for our Spring Barn Sale this weekend...and definitely have Farmhouse Style going on. It helps that the sale is in the hayloft of a 100+ year old barn with goats below....and even a new litter of kittens tucked in the back of the nearby corn crib. Yet, I stil work to wrap my mind around this style. It is anything but presumptuous, with hard working furnishings. I think of white woodwork, painted furniture, galvanized buckets, enamelware pitchers, Ball jars, daisies... I also focus on many true farm pieces...chicken nesting boxes, feeding troughs to plant in, etc. I am so intrigued with this style, and appreciate all your help defining it.

Kari, first of all, good luck on your Barn Sale. I wish I lived near you and could attend.
I've enjoyed reading everyone's take on Farmhouse style and I agree with those who've said it's an evolving style.
There's a new magazine out (which is a follow up to the book), called Romantic Prairie Style by Fifi O'Neill (former editor of Romantic country Homes magazine. Here's a link to their website:
http://www.romanticprairiemagazine.net/
I think the style they are portraying there is similar to the idea i have in my head of Farmhouse style-- primitives, rustic, chippy paint, cozy, simplistic and practical yet romantic.
I really like the style, but I'm always telling people my style is "Electic Chic" (whatever that is)! :)Posted 1 year ago # -
good luck kari,,,,i like your description....thats just what we are mainly selling....

I think painted furniture, rusty iron, old crockery bowls and blue canning jars, fresh linens, probably floral, pinned on the line with clothespegs, zinc and galvanized metals, buckets, aprons..just a cozy fresh outdoorsy country feel with unexpected elements as farm folk have to be inventive in their decorating. I know when I was growing up on the farm if it wasn't in our small farm town stores or in the JCPenney, Sears, or Montgomery Ward catalogs, you weren't going to get it! The internet has changed the Midwest so much in the last 15-20 years. You had to make do with what you had and there was a LOT of upcycling and recycling way before it was cool!

I loved that house in Field of Dreams..also (almost embarrassed to say it) Son in Law with Pauly Shore..those huge "Gothic Cube" houses are a fav of mine..my grandparents had one! (I looooved Practical Magic too..loved that house!)

Posted 1 year ago # -
i looked on pinterest and wow kari is so right....the term has a good start..... i kind of see it as a cleaner maybe brighter country look, and not so much little bitty stuff..and a good way for the primitive dealers to reach into the new market.... this is helping me for store displays too...

Fabulous first day of my Barn Sale.....ran "Farmhouse Style" past some folks there.........they agree -- it feels right & sounds right. There were moments Saturday when I was in a vintage apron, watching the kids feed our goats, bringing out a new kitten for a sneak little hug, selling one more old bucket or painted chair for the garden, or just hearing the laughter from our hayloft........and I knew what it Is, Farmhouse Style is pure........nothing contrived.....it is pure. It is hardworking, dirt under your nails, sun in our eyes pure. It can be at home in the city or the country...it is just being in the moment, knowing that what is good is honesty & integrity. That is Farmhouse Style as I am coming to know it....well.
