  1. Finally got out and about this weekend! Forgot about a great little store 7 miles away that all the proceeds go towards an animal shelter... picked up these goodies... Old kids records, a junkified candle holder, license plates and old sign. I want to figure out something to do with the 1969 Iowa license plate for my dad's new shop. He graduated in '69... any thoughts? How about the records? They are so cute, but my mind is a blank... any brainstoming ideas are welcome... My ears are open!

Wish I had some ideas to help you out but I am feeling creatively challenged this morning but did want to say I think the sign is really cute.

what's he like to do, collect, favorite things, look like, love, what kind of shop, etc?

How about some kind of keepsake box from the plate. Or mount the plate on an already made wooden box with other memorbilla that reminds you of special times with your dad.
As for the records you can place them in a low heat oven over a pop can or something larger and they will melt into a ridge type bowl. then turn the bowl upside down and place a small clip style light in it and hang them from the ceiling. Or you can make a label that would relate to you personally and put it over the old record label and frame them. Maybe something like "The Day Our Life began" sang by you and your husbands name. The record company label could be something like "Love records".

  5. On another site a lady cut the numbers apart on the plates and made like street addresses with them...

  6. Thanks for the great ideas... and maybe I should be more specific. My dad has been a farmer all his life, at 57 years old he finally treated himself to a new machine shed for his run down tractors, wagons, and equipment he has also put a shop on one side to finally have space to tinker with his many tools and boxes of goodies he clears off tables at auctions. Since his dad died 2 years ago- he's taken a new look on life and decided he will look and do what he likes, not what is most important... he's an avid junk collector, but doesn't see it as junk- because you never know when he will need one of his 35 handsaws hanging on a wall, or a gas cap from his bucket of gas caps. He will take hours to polish old tools to look like new.
He can't throw anything out- so I wanted to take this license plate and make something to put in his shop, hang in it, or use of storage... I'll attach a pix of my son and dad on the huge rock pile they had to remove to put the shed up. You'll see another reason I have picked my name to be thehillbillies!!!
Thanks again for all the help! I love having people to bounce ideas off and break down the mental creative blockage at times!

  7. Here's something I made with a 45. I don't know how appropriate it is for your father, but I thought I'd share it. It's a funky birdhouse made with a 45 and some carved wooden bowl I painted black. The title on the record is "Spirit in the Sky" (by Norman Greenbaum), I think that's kind of funny. I have another 45 project I'm toying with and I'll post it if I ever get it done.

  9. Hillbilly,
Wow, great rock pile. I'd love a bunch of those for my garden. Can you deliver? :>) Love the smiles on your dad and son's faces, too. I'm from hillbilly stock myself. My mom's people are from Kentucky. Can't get much hillbillier than that. Anyway. Some good ideas already from the others--I love Midge's birdhouse and I plan on making a few, too.

My idea is to make a windchime or mobile out of the 45s, you could hang them from an old LP cover, though if you did that, you'd probably have to keep it out of the weather. You could make a windchime out of the plates as well. Hang them from a steering wheel or some other car part. I'm sure your dad has plenty you could pilfer from.

junkermidge, love the birdhouse idea and how perfect is that title. How did you attach the record to the bowl? I have a stack of records somewheres, going to have to find them and see if I have a good one for a birdhouse. Is the lunch box in the back a birdhouse also? Diana

thehillbillies, The birdhouse posted made me thing of the birhouses I've seen with a license plate bend to make the roof. Wouldn't be something for inside but could hang right outside his shop. Diana

  13. Junkermidge - the birdhouse is fantastic! I have to tell you (being the red.neck that I am) that I thought that was a little tire until I read about the bowl! Yep, I'm rubbing the sleep out of my eyes right now...LOL I love what you did though - tire or no tire!!! :-)

thehillbillies - i make purses out of my records...but i have also made a few clocks, melted them around bowls and jars...the possibilities are endless! I have a license plate birdhouse that my step-dad made for me and it sits front and center...in my living room!!! (don't ask...i'm a red.neck!!!) But it is cute and very personalized by the date - so you might go with DPumm's idea! I also make purses out of old license plates but I'm thinkin' your Dad might not like that. heehee

Be sure and share what you end up doing!!! :-)

  14. Awesome ideas! I have to laugh junkermidge- my dad's favorite song is Spirit in the Sky... so how I'm thinking how appropriate your birdhouse would be already done... and now that I'm thinking about it, dad was going to make a patio off the back of the building so maybe I could make some projects with these and have windchimes and birdhouses out there for him.

Radioflyer- my dad made so big money off those rocks- I'll attach some pix so everyone can drool over the rocks he sold. I helped buid that rockpile so of course, got to take my pick of pretty ones for my garden. He had an amazing pile!!

Thanks again for all the ideas- when I get some stuff done, I will post pix. Any more ideas and I'm open!

Do you have a way to cut the liscense plate. If you do maybe you could cut it up and make a windchime.Cut the top strip off for the top and cut the leftover into strips and use them as the chimes.Just a thought.

  16. Midge ~ I just love the birdhouse! How clever and what great use for items we're usually not sure what to do with!

  17. Love the windchime idea! I use a tin snips to cut old license plates. The older the plates, the thicker they seem to be. You just need to squeeze a little harder. We have record coasters and frames in the Junk Revolution online store...can you believe Target is now selling the same? I guess us junkers are trend setters...or Target is a copy cat? Love the rock pile!

  18. I was gonna say purses too :D I make record album purses. I've seen bracelets, headbands, and the one thing I adored was some butterflies I saw this guy make,I so want to know how he did it! His name is Paul Villinski http://inventorspot.com/articles/drunken_butterfly_master_paul_villinskis_beer_can_art_11897

he also makes beautiful art from beer cans
I've also seen them melted into bowls..using 2 records, someone made a cake stand; coasters, all kinds of things for a music themed party.
