I have 4 long short windows that have vertical blinds and I want to change them out, I have the idea of just pulling all the plastic blind slats out and use the existing track for curtains. I would sew my own panel but I can’t figure out how to keep the fabric inside the existing plastic clip, I’ve have been playing with a sheet folded in half but it just keeps falling out, maybe thicker fabric would work but I do want to make sure the curtain stays in place so I can still open them. I live on a lake and I like having the blinds open for the view, I had originally installed the blinds because they do fold up nicely to one side and don’t block much of the window but I can’t help thinking that fabric would also work if I just figure out how to attach them.

  2. glue the fabric to the blinds? sew fabric around each blind? can you make a button hole in the fabric to hold to the top?

not sure how to make this work unless individually coating each slat with fabric.
but a bit of a different approach...the cheap roller type vinyl blinds are very easy to replace with fabric and they roll up nicely when pulled, too.

I actually want to take the blind slats off and just use the track, I had thought maybe a small thin grommet might work, didn't think about button holes, that would possibly work, in thinking about attaching fabric to the blinds, I’ll have to play with that, if a made a panel then glue or velcro across the top of each blind leaving a bit of extra in between each one, they would still open and then slide and fold to one side, interesting ideas, thank you to all!

  6. I suppose you could hook about anything long and thin on there - lawn chair webbing, jeans strips, what ever - probably have to weight the bottom

Have you tried your fabric thing yet? I am new to this site, found it looking for uses for the slats. I have considered doing this and came up with these ideas: Use about 4 inches of the top of the slat and about the same amount at the bottom. Using your fabric of choice, make a top pocket to fit all the way across the top, like a rod pocket and a similar hem to fit the bottom sections. Your fabric would have to be more than double your window width to account for the extra between slats when rotated open. Space all your slat pieces accordingly and you could either spread a little glue across the back and let dry or you could sew each one in place. I didn't try it myself because it sounded like more work than I wanted to do!

check out THE INSPIRED ROOM...making a roman shade out of mini-blind hardware..easy, glue fabric over top, and to a few spaced out slats to make it still pull up...check it out on her blog...easy peasy..I already threw all of mine out, or I would have done this rather than buy natural slatted roller shades or newer fabric roman shades...next time, I guess! lol

I gutted the rod, turned the brackets upside down.Snapped the rod back into the brackets with the slot turned upward. Bought shower hooks(not rings) and clipped a couple of old table clothes to the rings. Made a wonderful curtain rod that slides easily. The whole thing cost me $5 (for the shower hooks), I had everything else.
