Our property is loaded with big pine cones and my neighbor has very small ones. I want to do workshops at our barn sale on re-purposing. Does anyone have a clever idea on how to use pine cones?
In the past, we just laid them around, like under the Christmas trees and on shelves. I just know there has to be a clever idea for using them.

Some ideas I have used before for pinecones:
1. As "trees" for a christmas village - you can either paint white on the tips to give the idea of snow. or add glitter also for another effect. Add some type of small star trinket to the top (star buttons maybe)
2. Make winter "people" out of them. Add google eyes and felt made hats, pipe cleaner arms. cut out "feet" out of card stock so that it lays flat on the bottom to make it stand up.
3. Take the "leaves" (I am not sure what they are actually called) off of the pine cones. Lay them flat in rows & glue to roof of village buildings to give the effect of roof shingles. You can also put white paint on the tips or glitter to give the effect of snow on the roofs,This is a start, I am sure there are more that other people can share.

As a former girl scout--you could roll the small pine cones in "lard" or peanut butter then roll in bird seed and hang from your trees for the birds this winter.

I bought a beautiful garland made from pine cones at an antique store here a few years ago - it could be color glittered or left rustic - mine has "country - homespun" fabric tied to hang between each pine cone. I love them piled in bowls/dough bowls or lined up on my old French bread board. I personally am addicted to metallic glittered objects, especially copper, and would buy a bag of coppered pine cones if I found them.

Thanks for the ideas. They are great. We have so many, and I can't think about just tossing them. I love the bird feeder idea, the copper glittered idea, and using them for trees with my Christmas village.

I took ribbon and cut 3 about 12 inches long. Hot glued one end of each ribbon to the tops of 3 pine cones. Decorated them with dried rosehips and sprayed them with glitter. I tied the top of the ribbons together so they could be hung.

I've seen snowman ornaments made with them. Paint the tips of the pinecone white and add a touch of glitter. The head is a round wood bead painted white with a face. You could do a angel face and use big pieces of pinecone or maybe ribbon for the wings. They also make good fire starters, just dip them in wax, the wax can be sented or colored.
