I picked up this old seed spreader a few months ago, and can't wait to plant it with spring flowers. It's faded so not it's pink and green, with the words American Beauty. Can't get better than that.

I can't even think about getting in the garden until May, maybe. I don't plant until after Mother's Day, and even then there are some nights I have to cover stuff :(.

Ah - spring gardening...soil, dirty fingernails, flowers, watering cans, wheelbarrows ------ but right now, only snow, snow & more snow.
KariPosted 4 years ago # -
I just told my son today that I wished it was warmer out so I could go out and spend some quality time with my geese and peacocks. They love to be with me when I'm outside pulling weeds or adding something new that they can destroy :) It probably wont be till April. At least it will be in the 50's not the teens. My birthday is in the beginning of April and I've seen it snow then several times. The worst time was when we got 12 inches over night. :(

Yes I am wishing I could be outside too(-: I have a lot to do but its been to cold to work outside lately. Later this month or next should be able to get out and do some fun stuff!
Posted 4 years ago # -
Have any of you made a bottle tree? That's my next outdoor project. I've found several online and they look like they wouldn't be that hard to make (famous last words)! Usually when I say that I get in over my head.
ChristyPosted 4 years ago # -
I'm planning on getting out in my greenhouse this month for sure! The older I get, the more I want to be in natural light, and I want spring, summer, and fall to last forever! Karen

Itching to get started is an understatement. Although it's winter here (snowing as I type) a "junk" friend of mine will be starting seeds in February. Can't wait!!

Here is a project you can start now indoors. Even dress her with a coat or cloak, and put her in your garden now. I find great clothes at our Volunteer Services store. I got the idea from a Garden Web forum (Hi Robo Lady!)

Hi all
I'm new to the site and i love the idea of the seed spreader and the garden lady .What a nice forum i have joined .

I did see your grain scoops Margo--I think I've got a few of those out in my loft--have to check and see. I'm thinking of all of you snowbound posters--we've had some beautiful days here (80+ a few days ago here in Southern OK) so I'm really starting to think dirt and plants. Looking forward to seeing what projects for garden everyone comes up with.
ChristyPosted 4 years ago # -
The garden lady is an absolute doll. Is that a wooden cutout of a woman added to a regular wooden chair? I would love to try this project.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Yes, Tesie. I'll try to get some photos of how I make the lady. It is an old wooden chair and a wooden cutout.
Carol L.Posted 4 years ago # -
I'm thinking dirt and plants, too Christy, but in reality, here's my dirt and here are my plants. Winter in Minnesota -- ya gotta love it!
Posted 4 years ago # -
Wow Marge--here in Southern Oklahoma we don't get much snow so it looks pretty appealing to me. But that would only last a few days and then I would be ready for some sun and warmth.

OK how do I post a picture??????
Posted 4 years ago # -
Posting pictures. When you make a post, look just below the text box. You'll see the "browse" button, click it, and look for the pic from your computer. When you find it double click and the location of the picture, will appear in the gray box. Then click "send post with attachments." You can then add additional pictures to the same post by clicking that "Add additional attachments" link. Let me know how that works for you.

Wow is that a house behind all that snow?
Posted 4 years ago # -
I drew something up to give those interested an idea of how I made "Rosie" (the garden chair lady). I've tried a couple of different ways to make her but will give you the easiest way for me.
I cut the body a little less than the width of the chair and included the oval shape for the head. Then I cut a second oval the exact size as the oval used on the body and glued/bradnailed it to the body/head piece. I did this because I wanted the face to come forward from the body. This then got painted and tied with wire to the chair.
Keep in mind to make her tall enough so when the body rests on the chair seat, her head is high enough.
The next time I make one, I will take photos as I do it and post.Posted 4 years ago # -
Thanks for the hints, I want to put one together this spring they are so cute! Thay big pile of snow in my picture is in my bird bath. this next one is my blue bottle stump.....
Posted 4 years ago # -
Sheese,,,,bear with me folks I;ll get the hang of it yet!
Posted 4 years ago # -
I hear back home it was 24 below zero this morning....Brrrr. The only thing Minnesotans could plant in their gardens are snowmen. Actually, on secong thought...it is too cold for even that!
Love the chair idea! I think it would be fun to make one for each member of the family, dressed in their own clothes, and place around the dinner table. That way you don't feel so lonely when the kids are busy with sports and other activities. I could have used a fill in hubby chair when my husband worked over the dinner hour.
Peace,

What is a bottle tree that was mentioned above by csudderth?
Posted 4 years ago # -
Actually the thing I have (seen in the pics) is a bottle dryer. A Bottle tree is usually the trunk of a tree or a pole, with smaller poles attached at angles all around. Then you simply slide old colored bottles onto it. The backwoods legend is that it keeps the evil spirits away, because they get stuck in the bottles. As for me I just think they are pretty.
Here's one almost just like mine
http://www.thecityreview.com/s02pco1.gifPosted 4 years ago # -
Here are some of the bottle trees that I've found online. These are from bottletree.com and thebottletreeman.com
I think they are so pretty and colorful for the yard and it's a neat legend--I need to ward off evil spirits!

Robo,
What did u make ur tree out of? I have some old bottles of my husbands grandmother, old coke ,rc cola, sprite etc bottles from back in the 30's. Ive been wanting to make a tree but I'm trying to figure out how to make it and what to make it out of..Posted 4 years ago # -
I'm bringing back this old thread/string/post(?) because I made one of the garden ladies that Goldie showed us earlier and I wanted to share mine with you. I was too lazy to make it using the plywood and painted face, so I used a shovel instead. If I get the vibe that the shovel method makes her look too creepy, I might add the wood later.
MidgePosted 4 years ago # -
I love your "garden lady" and you could even paint a face on the shovel. I think she has some 'ghostly charm' for some reason and would get a lot of lookers driving or jogging by your house. That would almost be worth it to plop one in my yard just for a weekend! I could sit upstairs and laugh my head off....especially at the kids in our neighborhood. Enjoy her this spring and summer! Jan
Posted 4 years ago # -
I do enjoy her as well... Jan put it well... she has a 'ghostly charm'... to me it adds mystery, and I can interpret it that anyone could picture themself as the garden lady (I'm getting deep, maybe I should go to bed!!!) Anyway- great job! I like her!
Posted 4 years ago # -
Midge-she's not creepy at all. I like her. You did a great job and have inspired me to try this in my new vegetable garden but with a "gentleman" to stand guard. I'll post pics once he's complete. LuAnn
Posted 4 years ago # -
Hillbillies -- I glad you like her. That "ghostly charm" is because she's a retired Grateful Dead groupie who now spends her days gardening and fantasizing about what 'could have been'.
Jan -- Thanks for the kind words and I never thought about just painting the shovel. That's a great idea and what I'll do if I decide she needs a face.
LuAnn -- Glad you like her. I'd love to see your gentleman. Are you thinking more English butler or American gothic? The great thing about the way I put it together is that it's completely no construction (actually for me that's a negative -- I love my tools). I attached the shovel to the back of the chair with wire, like big twist ties. I'm sure my husband would have used zipties. Also, I think my shovel head was a little smaller than standard and I did cut a few inches off the shovel handle to get it the height I liked.
Have fun!
MidgePosted 4 years ago # -
my husband is a zip tie freak too!!!
I may have to make one of my own... I'm sure I've got some shovels around I'm not using this spring!
Posted 4 years ago # -
I am going to see if DH will make me one with my bentwood chair that is just sitting around for nothing. I want to leave mine with that 'ghostly charm' though just for good conversation. I will hit the thrift store for sold old gardening clothes and a hat. Jan

love the chair ladies! I'm going to see if our Friends of library group can put some together reading books for our town's 125th anniv.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Oh, Midge, she is really neat! Maybe a little ghostly, but mostly a cute idea for the garden or the front of your shop. You really come up with some unique ideas.

Okay this place really exists in our city limits. I will post just a few of the pics and the entire shots are on my blog so take a look for a great laugh! DH discovered this and drove me by and I had to share with y'all. Check the baby buzzard at the house next door....I wasn't about to get out of the truck to snap these shots! I even laughed at the dining booths from the recently remodeled Taco Bell in town. Surely NO ONE lives here! Blog address:

Hey everyone, I'm back from computer withdraw. (Laptop crashed, literally on the floor) so thought I would bumb up some spring posts. (Think Spring, Think Spring, Think Spring)
Posted 2 years ago # -
I love the shovel head lady - I have some coffee pots might work for the head - just have to figure out how to attach them.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I sure am wishing for spring as the wind howls out the front window and the temps are in the 20's. Spring can't come soon enough.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yes, I'm wishing to get my hands dirty in the garden. Our big project this year is to make a garden house mostly with castoffs. We made a green house that way several years ago. I will be starting my wintersowing this week. Have containers ready to go, table on the deck is ready to receive them. Anyone here winter sow? A great way to use milk jugs and large icecream containers!
Posted 2 years ago # -
I'm just ready to get out and get the grandbabies outside to...
Posted 2 years ago # -
The weather for the next week, above freezing. That's a blessing right there!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Our weather for this week will be like riding a roller coaster--high 30's one day low 20's the next but then any one who lives in Michigan is used to this. Just counting the days till spring--23 and counting for spring and 18 and counting for our new grand daughter. Lots to look forward to!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Awww Congrats Luann...It's a wonderful Blessing...
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks Lev--can't wait till she gets here!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Well I love getting out in my garden.. and I can not wait.. wishing my veggies will do better this year.. and yesterday we had an awful storm the wind blew down 110 foot tree back on our property so the boys will have to cut it up.. it was hollow so I am sure that is why it blew down with the strong winds we had.. and also the Ohio River is rising and that part of the property has some water on it.. so can not cut the tree up until the water goes back down.. but yes I am ready for Spring..

I love the garden lady and I am going to make one to sit outside , cause as you see.. I have a mean and nasty neighbor and she calls the police if my dog farts.. sorry but this is true.. so I think I will make one and sit her in my driveway as she complains if I sit outside my house in the shade.. and she will take pictures of me all the time.. so i think I will just sit Gertie out there and that should really give her something to think about.. she will more than likey think I have a hidden camera inside of Gertie.. then I may make a Gus and sit him right next to Gertie.. oh this could be fun.. and all legal... Thanks guys.. Lev.. you know the problems I have been having with this nut case.. I then maybe will put a couple in my garden too.. I will set Gert and Gus in the driveway with a table between them and maybe some tea cups glued to the table and etc.. I will take a pic if I chose to do this.. LOL
Posted 2 years ago # -
ROTFLMBO Huggy you need a naughty old potty with a Gertie out there sittin' and holdin' court in her nighty gown - curlers in her hair - fuzzy slippers? - MOON that lady too - wouldn't it be fun if you could make her wink - If she wants to take pictures, give her something to take pictures of...
40 years ago, we had a friend who entertained the neighborhood by painting his front door a different color every week+- I don't know if he just got bored with the color(s) or if he liked to paint or had really cheap paint or what... sure did get the neighbor's attention... LOL
Posted 2 years ago # -
COPPERHEAD, I love your ideas.. the potty one and mooning her is great.. might beable to think of a way to make her wink.. oh that would be awesome.. she would think everytime Gertie winks she is taking a picture of her.. oh my gosh .. she would be on the phone to the police in a minute.. haaaa.. and I know of no law that says I cannot put out a lady sitting in a chair winking.. lol I most certainly post a pic if I chose to do this.. LOL
Posted 2 years ago # -
Love all the photos. They are really inspiring. The main thing I think about when I look out my windows is that we've GOT to get all the dead leaves up, trim, etc.
I was inside all fall and winter with my mom and my husband has had two back surgeries and yardwork is getting harder and harder for him to do. He's only 56 and it breaks my heart that he's getting in such bad shape.
Anyway... I plan on planting a few things in some unusual junk containers, etc. Probably not anything too ambitious as when I start he always wants to help me. I think it's cause he's seen me try to use tools of any kind! LOL
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hugs...always keep them guessing...LOL
Posted 2 years ago # -
OH Lev.. I plan on it.. and love the garden lady and man.. most people can not believe how nasty this lady is.. she blockes her own mailbox which is next to mine.. so she can keep me from getting my mail.. Now that is a nut case..LOL I am going to try something new this year with my tomatoes expson salts in the hole where I plant my tomatoe plant.. they say it is good for the soil and also I am not going to stake my tomatoes this year.. let them lay , but will put straw and mulch on the ground.. we had such awful luck last year I had to buy tomatoes and that is just unheard of for my salsa ... I do not do as big a garden as I use to as it is getting a little hard for me and my son is working a lot and it is hard for him to get in the garden too and help with the weeds he does help me a lot.. but sometimes those darn weeds can get a hold of the garden in just a couple of days.. if I only had a penny for each weed I ever pulled I would be a millionair.. but I still love it.. love my roses and all the flowers .. just spending time outside and sitting in my garden and listen to the birds and watching all the little critters.. sorry we lost the big 110 foot tree on the back property.. it was such a pretty tree.. but glad it just hit the ground and nothing else..
Posted 2 years ago # -
We have a huge old pine that has been leaning for years. Every storm I hope it will come down except it will hit the road. My neighbor says it's on his property, which it is not. Neighbors!
On a lighter note, just made a garden chair for a lady at work. Will take pics and TRY to post.Posted 2 years ago # -
Diane.. no what you mean... Neighbors.. ☻☻☻
Posted 2 years ago # -
I think I need a bottle tree too to ward off the evil spirts from the neighbors.....LOL
Posted 2 years ago # -
The bottle tree might work as long as she doesn't have a baseball bat... just stick it in HER yard... at night or wait until she is gone.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I have a lot of GREEN wine bottles if you need them! Am trying to figure out how to take off the label in one piece to decoupage (sp) them onto something.
Posted 2 years ago # -
You might try Goo BEGONE to see if you can get it off in one piece.. also hear Ronson Lighter Fluid works on lables.. maybe just be very carefull and do it slowly and it may come off in one piece.. remember that lighter fluid is flamable so be very carefull where you use it and what you do with the rag that you use when done..
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks Huggy, I'll try that.
