Topic: What's your junk addiction?

 (130 posts)
  1. A friend of mine sent me these photos and it got me thinking. Most of us junkers are addicted to something. Call it our personal collection, if you will. I am addicted to advertising glassware and china. I can't seem to go anywhere without picking up a souvenir for my stash. This guy in Freemont Nebraska has a collection of 10,752 fishing lures displayed in his shop, Hounds Collectibles and More. Man oh man!

What is your junk addiction? Come on, be honest!
    Peace,
    Ki

The very oddest addiction I have are folding bed trays. The legs fold under and the top tray can be set at different angles. Some have tole painted designs on them and some are plain. They look to be from the 40's or 50's. I can't pass them up. I have about 12 or 15 on hand and have given some away. I've redesigned some that may have been a very ugly color. I guess if I open a hospital or nursing home one day, I'm set.

  3. Where do I start? Metal baskets, gears, clocks, door hardware, black/white signs, numbers, Vintage office equipment or supplies. I'm sure there are more that I can't think of. I don't think I have a collection quite to the extent of the fishing lure guy though.
    Great question.

Picket fencing and old windows are my biggest weakness. I could be walking toward a flea market or yard sale and spot these immediately. Unfortunately I have missed out on other great buys because I get distracted so easily.

  5. For me it's old suitcases. Also sometimes other storage things such as old boxes or toolboxes.
I also have a large collection of vintage embroidered pillowcases.

Oh, I'm like Margo. I'm addicted to a lot of things. I like numbers, letters, and just about anything industrial. I'm also drawn to picture frames for some reason. I've got a loft full of them and old windows. One of these days I'm going to find a great use for all this stuff.

thinking of how my tastes have really changed over the yrs....only thing i'd look for is old jewelry (costume-real) now i barely give it a glance.

probably old furniture-old wooden architectural-old barn wood

  9. Oh...what a good question. Hmmm-if you walk around my house you will clearly see that I collect a lot! To narrow it down:
bird cages; painted children's chairs; toy brooms; enamelware pitchers; round graters; candy jars filled with buttons, vintage lace, prisms...; German Steiff mohair animals; tinware & wireworks; funeral flower baskets; oh my --- this list could go on & on.
In a nut shell, if it tugs at my heart - likely it is mine!

  10. I love too many things! But looking around my space I see there are some in particular: Pottery, especially mixing bowls and pie plates, catch my eye. Also enamelware/graniteware pots, pans, coffee pots & cups. Oh, and cast iron pieces like windvanes, plant hangers, coat hooks, etc.

Well what a question-caused for some thought. I too have may addictions--vintage plantars, wall pockets, vintage spice jars, old refrigerator containers to mention a few. My tastes have changed over the years-at time I bought about every wooden folding table I could find, chairs (extreme passion), linens. I could go on and on. Needless to say since I use what I buy my house runneth over. But boy is it fun. My friends are amazed at what I come up with when entertaining-always something different.

  12. I guess I really don't have any one thing...I'm so new at this that one certain thing doesn't stick out to me at the moment...

  13. I have so many things that I collect. I've noticed in the last few years I tend to be drawn to anything metal. Probably because my husband is a welder. I really like unique and odd things also. I've been posting weekly pictures of things that I have on my blog. If anyone has seen them you'll notice so far that I tend to keep the 'odd' things. Since I was young, i've always liked anything victorian. That's probably because my all time favorite movie was 'gone with the wind'.
Good question, Ki, it really got us thinking about our personalities.

I have a huge passion for linens and anything with prisms. I have so many loose prisms I need to do projects with that it would take me a year to use them all. Love anything with rhinestones too. I must have a thing for the bling!

  18. Anything that can fill up the rooms in my house! I love furniture- which is difficult because furniture is big and there is only so much room for it! I love chippy, peeling paint on anything. Love windows, doors, round back chairs, enamelware is also a passion! Quilts... someday when I can afford to remodel my kitchen I'm collecting red kitchen items. What a hard question to narrow it down to one!

I also have many junk addictions. My newest addition are horses, as you can see from the pic. One of my other addictions is what I call my found object bulletin board. I love those small one of a kind things that use to be something special to someone else, keepsakes I guess.

  21. My answer is cream pitchers – pitchers that hold cream. I got started years ago with cute little cream pitchers. They are easy to find so to keep the addiction from getting out of hand, I was fussy about the shape. I love fat little round bellies on a pitcher. Eventually, I eliminated all except the ones that are cream colored. Cream cream pitchers – cream colored pitchers that hold cream. Then I added larger sized pitchers to my habit. So now my answer is back to cream pitchers – cream colored pitchers. I also gravitate towards old kitchen utensils, sewing notions and baby shoes. I must say though, these things are NOT junk!

My junk addition is anything rusty.... has to be the old rust.. not the new bright orange rust (fake rust as I call it), has to be the old rust that the object earned the hard way, over time. If its rusty, I gotta have it! My husband thinks I'm nuts! I love old rusty farm machinery, gears, troughs, you name I love it love it love it if its rusty! I also have a "thing" for carriers... tool boxes, berry crates, totes. Love those too! Now if i could just find an old rusty carrier.. I'd be in heaven!

I just took a six pane window and removed the glass, then I went to Menards. I went to the bulletin board department. There they have bulletin board you can buy that can be cut to size. I cut six pieces to fit each pane. I then put some glue on the inside of the frame and pressed each piece of bulletin board into each pane. I drilled a hole at the top of the frame on each side, ran heavy rusty wire through each hole to hang it with. That's it.

I just love anything rusty, any metal object that can be painted white and distressed, plates, frames, china, doorknobs, old paint peeling wood, anything I can buy for a cheap or is free. Well you get the picture!! Now I have to find a place for it all. One luck my hubby built a big storage room in the shop!

I'm another one who flies by my shirt tail.....I can always take home something that's rusty or weathered or black or retro looking! LOL Also I love things that can be used as something else.

I have about 250 pieces of Fireking Jadite that I dearly love. Other than that, I have several pieces of 50's type furniture. Not that it goes with the above, but I also love organic things - I've decorated with rocks and wood and tumbleweeds, etc.

Friend of mine "hit" the local salvage yard occasionally and it's a blast. The guys out there laugh at us. Don't think anybody else BUYS out there! LOL

  31. I can't believe that I am about to admit to this....but I ADORE bowling bags!!! They are SO fun to have all lined up on my shelf in my living room! I think my fascination with them lies in the fact that they have great, simple lines!!! OH! And each one on my shelves stores something or another...sparkly things, dishes, letter and numbers of all shapes and sizes seem to gravitate towards my house - I just don't understand that! ha-ha!

  36. Oh Jennifer...I can relate - I have a drawer of flower frogs -- I'm especially partial to the smaller rusty ones. I love to just grab one to hold a postcard. If you look in the picture, on the shelf above the German Steiff mohair frogs (how adorable are they?) you will see a flower frog hard at work holding a floral advertising card.

  39. redneckChick - how smart are you...flower frogs holding paint samples!!

Brezlin - I indeed know the paint color -- when we restored the farm in 2006 I logged in a notebook every paint sample, wallpaper piece etc. I failed to do this for our last home and suffered the consequences. I also decided with this house that all the white - inside and out would be the same color. But, I digress --- the paint color is Martha Stewart: Green Tea. I like it, but it does tend to look pastel if you don't anchor it with some darker pieces. I have this color in my kitchen and living room - using a dark green & brown to anchor it in the living room and a deep almost mohogany wood in the kitchen.

P.S. - the picture is my ode to "St. Patrick's Day" -- I tend to decorate more by color then by holidayish pieces.

  41. For a quick post here, I'll admit that I love kitchen utensils. That's usually where I go first in my favorite Goodwill and thrift stores. I buy stuff I'll never use or display, thinking that I might get a brainstorm someday on what to do with the pieces. Someday they'll become a part to some junk ensemble I decide to put together. I have about 15 vintage/antique hand potato mashers- the kind that stand up on their own. I've made some into bud vases by attaching antique glass bottles to them with wire and adorning them with beads and wire. Mashers are what I have the MOST of right now.

  43. My current weakness is still glass insulators and glass dishes for totems because I can still find them inexpensively. I love hunting for old gears and springs but haven't found too many here that I can afford, so I've passed on a few. I also really like old coal stoves....pretty much, it it's heavy and a metal of some kind, I like it...LOL. Also, if I can mosaic it, it's mine too....LOL.

  49. hmm, too many. I'll start with small, old wooden toys, especially the German ones. I still have the tiny little working Singer sewing machine I played with as a teensy girl, you had to turn the crank handle to make it sew, it wasn't electric. I haven't stopped sewing since! old glass medicine bottles, ink wells, and salt cellars; anything lavender glass; wooden rolling pins and sausage stuffers; pearls, as in ear clips or necklaces; old toys as in Western! lol, children's cowboy boots and hats and cap pistols, sling shots, coon skin caps, and I buy blue spatter metal cook ware and dinner ware, to go with the cowboy stuff,in my "new" laundry room one day, I also have an old wooden ladder to suspend from the ceiling to store the blue spatterware; cast iron cookware already seasoned, and I use it; almost anything to do with the Mississippi Gulf Coast, like paintings of the ocean, boats, ships, lighthouses, mansions, arrowheads, driftwood, petrified wood; crocks and old crock beer bottles;.........
!!!!!!!!!!OHMYGOD-I TURNED INTO MY MOTHER!!!!!!no,no, I'm SURE I'm not OCD! I have PLANS for MY treasures! I don't stuff things under the beds or....oh,man; yeah, I do! That third bedroom! It's crammed full of my TREASURES....
At this point I think I'd be better off buying a new house with five bedrooms and a three car garage with a commercial sized storage building and a barn *blush*

  56. I see that this topic was started awhile back, but how fun to read through everybody's faves.

Lately, it has been anything metal for me!! I also love Coca-Cola stuff and Hershey's chocolate stuff -- although these are both pretty pricey items, so I do not have many!

    Love vintage kitchen items, too!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  57. Things I can't pass up are baby shoes, little chairs, jars, old crates, crocks, and enamel ware. Farmers Wife I'm with you on the Hershey's thing. That is what my kitchen is done in as I am most definately a chocolaholic! It is expensive so everyone, especially my mother-n-law, keeps an eye out for unique items. Oh, and my most favorite is old cupboards. There is no storage in this old house so my philosophy is you can never have too many...LOL!

I'm surprised I didn't already chime in; hate to pass up an opportunity to talk! I'm a sucker for letter and number items: Scrabble tiles, flash cards, vintage wooden letters, etc. I practically salivated when I found a huge box of elementary school word flash cards. I was thinking about all the ways I would use the cards. Then I looked on Ebay and saw what they sell for (up to $212 for a set) and decided I could be bought off. I love seeing what people do with printed letters and signs.

I love to find old tins - the advertising kind. I have them all over my kitchen. (hubby just rolls his eyes when I buy more) I try to sneak new ones in there so he won't notice... I love any kind of fabric, buttons, lots of sewing stuff. I have a ton of cool old sewing machines and parts which I love to tinker. I am a sucker for old sewing or craft books and patterns. Old game parts, silverware, lanterns, pewter, wooden bowls. I have a collection of coffee pots to make something out of. I like to wear rayon blouses as long as they say Liz somewhere on them... Hi Copperhead, I used gorila glue, I think, which probably wasn't the best because some did come apart. Soooooo ladies, what glue works on glass and mangets? Things that make you go hmmmmmmm. Diane

  80. I was going to try gorilla glue... I am glad you posted before I bought some... I don't know either... Anybody??

  81. I use E6000 for just about everything. I've glued pretty rocks and dice to magnets and it worked fine.

Dianeinthevalley, I lost my feisty mom in December after she turned 86 in October. I miss her dearly and I sure hope that your mom is still going strong!!

I've developed an attraction toward seatless chairs since this post came by the first time! LOL It was fun reading it all over again.

Rosie, Sorry about your loss. Yes, my Mom is still going, turned 86 Feb. 8. She is a little slow getting around but her mind is as sharp as a tack. The old posts are fun to read. I keep going to the garden section. Wishing for spring I guess.

  96. DH just sort of shrugs and says what ever... but he did go with me to get her... and he did carry her around... I seem to take in sewing machines in ANY condition... Thursday night got a big old industrial Singer 241 WWII vintage with no chrome from Craig's List - FREE... The next task is to make her sing again. Her gears & wheels are all gummy because she has set far too long without being used. I believe I should name her. She is very plain and simple but all stuck up. She has a very beautiful table and her sweet motor purrs. I just know we are going to be best of friends one of these days. I am going to have to really try to sell some of the other machines I have lurking around....

I vote Norma, after Norma Shearer. If you've never seen the original version of THE WOMEN rent it sometime. Joan Crawford, Rosiland Russel and Norma Shearer. 1939, no men in the entire movie. One of my favorites.

Well, let's see, so many things: vintage coca cola anything, dishes, glassware, martini glasses especially, windows and shutters, hair accessories, necklaces, metal and wood signs, linens, and architectural pieces.

  103. Of late, I've been collecting pictures of sewing. So far I found an exquisite watercolor at GW lb of an oriental lady sewing. (I almost felt like I stole that one on the other hand maybe it was just meant for me to find it.) I also have a Dr Suess pic of Who sews Sue's clothes, an old Singer ad with a lady at her treadle and a Norman Rockwell of a man sewing. These are on my sewing room walls. I have old sewing notions, an old home Ec book to do something with too. I think I'm going to glue some old pattern envelopes to the back of a really worn out mirror full length edges - might have to help the mirror with some oven cleaner to get the pics to show through more.

It seems that owls, in the form of jewelry and collectibles, are very popular right now.

I like the fact that you collect quails. I love Bob Whites and their sweet call.

I did a Google "image" search on quails and can see exactly why you collect them. They are adorable.

Here is a pair I found!

    Welcome to the site,

For years I had been collecting the plastic M&M guys. My husband would find them and bring them home. The collection actually got quite big but then I discovered re-selling. I am delaying on actually finding a job (and I really need one but don't want to work for anyone; I want to be my own boss) so when I discovered that the M&Ms sold quite well at my antique booth they all went there. But.. I still have the ceramic little village houses (I don't know how else to describe them) but now I am starting to look at them and see possible dollar signs. In order to try to make money I look at anything not nailed down all while wondering if I could make some money selling it.

  112. Ladydianab, you would have loved to have been at the
GW I was at today because someone must have donated their collection of M&M character dispensers. I happened to get 3 of them and noticed a few more in other peoples carts. I've sold all that I've put in my booth so far, although it does go against my new self imposed new rule of sticking to a theme with my purchases for my booth! lol... can anyone say.... "Obsessive compulsive"??? ha! I guess I'm going to have to admit my "addiction" if I can onlly find time between compulsively obtaining new treasures!!.. so SAD!!! ;)

Vintage textiles--I love them all, old, shabby quilts, baby clothes--any old clothes--scarves, pillows, framed needlework, stuff like that.

My other weakness is old cosmetics jars, makeup, shampoo, compacts, any dresser items, oh yeah!

I've had a couple of white muslin baby dresses for years - I enlarged my patterns and duplicated one for my GDs - they loved them. And recently, I found an old nylon dress - looks like never worn. (My GD definitely WON'T wear it though. She looked and just shuttered at the see through the fabric part) It reminds me of a dress I wore back in the 1950s - mine was pink - very warm and prickly the in summer... not so warm in winter... Maybe I just was desperate for a piece of my child hood... I got it at Goodwill where they weigh everything so probably paid next to nothing. I thought it might make a cute thing to hang on my cute little vintage plastic hanger in a window somewhere in the next house...

  118. I looove vintage feedsacks..the printed floral kind, buttons, McCoy pottery esp vases and planters in white, green, aqua, yellow..and ok..I have a couple pink too! I like jadeite and 40's 50's floral tablecloths. As far as junk collectibles, I am a metal head..serious weakness for hardware pieces parts and random cool metal bits. I also like architectural salvage pieces but they must be cheap..because I am! I like things that can be reused/remade.

I'm new and thought I would get in on the fun. I collect vintage cameras, vintage radios, and Chinese Checker boards. I love spending Saturdays in flea markets, at yard sales, and estate sales where I find all kinds of vintage canning items. I recently began a collection of old Ball canning jars that I've filled with game pieces collected when I bought the game boards.........let nothing go to waste!
