  1. So....I promised my sister & my brother-in-law that I wouldn't paint the vintage or antique Victrola cabinet (no victrola) that I found, but I'm weakening....just think how great it would look!!!

However, I'm aware of needing to respect what I have. Anyone know anything about pieces like this?? If it's nothing special, maybe I will paint it, but Ebay research has turned up some interesting info...price $350 and higher (different companies however)

Any advice?? I don't feel right about slapping paint on it without knowing more...

I'd be torn too. I love the original look. Maybe you could try cleaning the wood and shine it up and see how it looks. Then if you don't like the look then I say go for it.

  6. why not make it into something you like..
its just an empty case and not oak and would be hard to sell in our market for sure..jon gets those easily at shipshewanna for way under 100..its a great size and would make a neat table /small cabinet...
my vote...dont worry abot it...or sell it to y our brother for a couple of hundred!!and let him save it..

I too would paint. I have been at a few yard sales and found really rough pieces. I made the mistake of saying I wanted to paint it. The people look at me as if I just shot an arrow through their heart.

  9. i would paint it too.....there are loads of them around here...this one is a bit different style, but these days "antiques" are not going for the same old prices....painted furniture is 'in'...and oh it would look so cute painted...maybe add a few of those wood flowers...(what do you call them??) or paint roses on the doors....so shabby....tres bella !

  10. i hope i dindnt sound too flippant.... but these are plentiful....theres good junk then theres valuable antiques....if it was 1850 tiger maple you would be hurting something...this isnt.its just the case of an old victrola... , not worth restoring and finding the innards, unless it was family......we love to get them and old radios and a certain sewing machine in a wood case with legs...just to paint...it kind of saves them and gives them a new purpose...

  11. Whether you paint it or refinish it or just clean it up...will make a wonderful end table! Maybe take out even more of the inside and you could store magazines in it!

  12. I heard some good advice from a dealer on a TV show one time - a lady had a fancy dresser she wanted to paint, but was afraid of hurting it's value. He told her it's value wasn't only monetary. Since she didn't plan on selling it, he told her if she would enjoy it more painted, then by all means paint it, and smile each day when she looked at it.

It would look pretty painted wouldn't it? I'm on a furniture painting kick right now - the more I paint, the more I want to paint LOL.

  13. I absolutely LOVE you guys!!! You've all said what was in my heart all along, but I was feeling too inexperienced & not confident enough to act on it. I'm sooo glad that it seems it's nothing too special. I will absolutely LOVE it painted, and I will smile every time I look at it :) Thank you so much for helping me make this decision!

I'll take pics after it's painted. I'm so excited, I may do it this weekend in the heat & everything!

  14. barb...i have heard (and agree ) that also...i have my grandmother's bedroom set and i have been wanting to paint it white for a while now...i have decided that when i move into my new house i AM going to paint it up !! i dont care about the 'antique' value of it, to me it's just the sentimental value..shouldnt i enjoy it now??? (besides...my kids sure dont care about the antique value..haha)

just a thought...would the lid lay flush and stay on if the hinges were gone? wondering because it would be cute as a beverage cabinet/cart and you could paint all but the inside of the lid and add handles and use as a serving tray when needed, just flip it over and there's the tray on handles and the beautiful victrola emblem to still enjoy!! i absolutely love the handles...keep them on there after it's painted!!! there great!

  16. Great idea Gigi! Actually, the hinges are off, and it does lay flush. I like the idea of being able to flip the lid...I will keep the inside of the lid un-painted.

  17. So, something very unexpected happened regarding this cabinet. I mentioned to my daughter that I have received some advice and support, and had decided to paint it. She literally gasped in horror, and said "Mom, DON'T paint it! I love how it looks right now, and you'll have to move everything you have on it if you paint it, because it won't show up against white".

She has a point...and I hate to change things in the house that my kids really like...here's how I set it up temporarily while I was deciding what to do. Now I may have to keep it this way!!

  19. Mona you can paint it anytime...Time down the road you may just decide one day "HEY I"M GOING TO PAINT THAT SUCKER"...

  20. Ann..I do like the legs on this thing.

Leveta..so funny! And true...I've done it before! unpainted one day, painted the next! It's too hot to paint right now anyway :)

  21. Ok, It's like this you now have clout... hold it over her head - "If you don't..." (do) "I'll paint that inheritance of yours..." LOL if you paint you lose clout...

  22. i have a working victor talking machine like that..i keep lemon oil or the other furniture oil on it, makes it look new and shiny.

we had an edison tall cabinet when we were growing up, and mama had tons of antiques. when hurricane camille hit, we had music and plenty of kerosene lamps. no electricty for several months...but the neighbors could hear music for miles and see our lights shining bright :D funny...i mostly remember the record with 'kitten on the keys' but we had a lot of mother maybelle and other songs our neighbors would normally listen to on whatever radio stations they listened to. they would ask how did we get our electricity back on when there weren't even power poles or lines up yet :D

i wouldn't paint it. i do like the beverage cart/bar idea. you wouldn't really have to alter it. one day someone may be willing to buy the cabinet for $$$$ because their cabinet is ruined but the talking machine is fine.....you never know! besides..it will look great in the meantime as a bar :D

  23. Love it all, and Copperhead the idea of clout is irresistible! Especially after the description of Kudzuqween's memories, I'm re-thinking the paint...it does look nice & will look better all polished! Thanks all!!

  25. Thanks LuAnn...with the summer being so hot, it would be at the back of a long line of project anyway, so it's just as well that it can wait!

  26. Your cabinet is quite lovely..but let's face it..BORING!!! I love the look of painted wood furniture...especially shabby chic. Just imagine how amazing this piece would look with a creamy off white finish. Or even better ...after you paint add some vintage wallpaper to highlight the door... now that would look wonderful...and no where near boring. As always..PeaCe.
