Sorry to hear your booth isn't doing well but I am thinking you will do much better at the new store. That looks like my kind of place to shop! Love the French look!

    Ann,

It is unbelievable to me that your mall is suffering. I love to look at your blog BECAUSE of the tremendously diverse and awesome items your carry or create. Hateful economy!

You are business savvy. Consigning out your items is a great idea. Cest La Vie looks to me like it will reach younger customers. You can even advertise your store on your wares. Sounds like a vicarious relationship...Rhonda buys from you...you consign with her! Smart!

I think it will take all the imagination and determination dealers can muster to achieve success these days. You have to have a "business bent". Even with my 12 x 12 space, I am constantly decorating, adding new items and posting sale signs. I am always ruminating.

I watch customers and try to listen to their praise or criticism. I pay close attention to what sells/doesn't sell for me and other vendors. I keep my buying-costs at a minimum. I am willing to "work" on pieces I find...to increase my profit. I search for freebies like a vulture searches for prey!! ; )

I am still a novice, but I am willing and wanting to keep learning.

My present irritation? We are located no more than 1 mile off of a major interstate. We have umpteen gas stations and every fast food restaurant imaginable in our town....but our store does not register on a GPS!!! Just found this out. I am thinking of how we much we could improve business if travelers knew we were here.

  6. FYI Blossom, Ann has things in a mall that she says is doing poorly, but her personal 10,000 sq ft store that she blogs about and has a web site for - Green Oak Antiques - is not a mall and is in good shape. Just thought it sounded like you misunderstood her post.

    Marge,

Thanks for the clarification! I am so impressed with Green Oak Antiques! I am glad Ann's store is doing well. So many, once prosperous antiques stores, in our area are struggling or have closed their doors.

Thanks again for the good news!

  8. thaNKS MARGE...RIGHT WE ARE IN A MALL, a very deserted one i hate to say...borkholders in nappanee...... but our store still is doing ok....supporting us!! we have a great set of customers and thanksfuly they bring their daughters so we have tons of young families buying from us now ....my key is upscale and reasonable inprice ...and i see my buyers as fun and jaded and adventurous....
most of the antique stores here s closed too...but we changed and now are kind of a hybrid, witrh a new slant on things...
event he word antique is kind of bad.... i try and use vintage..ha ha... and most of the thngs im kind of good at and know a bit about [transferware, folkart, majolica, early country furniture...the good stuff!!!] is quite irrelevant to my business now...
i think my new consignment spot has a great vision on the new buyers...and she is so generous and really advertizes us upo there...so hopefully it will be a win win... ...
somehow you have to tell folks you arent a normal antique store.....
greta , is your store on facebook? do you keep a mailing list? we are new on facebook...its so different...,its under green oak antiques....im not sure how to use it but we have over 600 fans.... kind of wierd...
