Would not the ivory parts make a good base for a pendant? My dad turned his old piano into a computer desk. I wish he saved the keys but he is not much of a saver and I am guessing they hit the burning barrel! :( I wish I would have been there to head him off at the pass..the desk is cool though!

google search scrimshaw powder horns then go into the images (left hand side of the screen) you will see some beautiful work. You might look under videos as well. I have met some folk who do wonderful scrimshaw work. You can get tools, books, etc on line. When we go to Florida that kind of stuff is mostly gone before the tourists show up - well, the good stuff is gone... One year I traded a pair of breeches for a powder horn. I SERIOUSLY got the good end of the deal. DH got a very nice present he treasures and the man from Minnesota is no longer making them. Wear a dust mask.

yeah scrimshaw is where you etch/scratch the ivory, bone or horn then you smear paint into the groove and wipe off excess paint. It's done on powder horns. It can be very beautiful. Lots of free pianos out there on CL - you just have to be able to haul and store...

I found more keys! http://www.jillruth.com/2011/04/mosaic-monday_11.html

We need to brainstorm more ladies! I know you can sell them for scrimshaw art...not really sure what it is, carving or painting on ivory I believe.

I have an old upright piano- or rather most of the parts of one now. It has sentimental value to me. I wanted to do something with it for my daughters, as it was what they learned on years ago. So far, we have cut the keys to size and the plan is to glue them to the top of a lid of a small wood box and then either paint the box or decoupage sheet music to the rest of the box. I would love to hear other ideas as well-- you all have great ideas.

I really like your new half sunburst version! Very cool!

Jillruth --
I love your pupet theater. I'm currently in the process of redoing a piano and considered your idea (I'd seen it in another post). Since my kids are older I'm storing the idea away for later. I've decided to go for a desk, I'll post when done.

I have piano keys in my barn just waiting....neat idea! I turned my piano into a puppet theater. That can be seen here: http://jillruth.blogspot.com/2009/02/puppet-theater.html

I posted a starburst awhile back, well I decided it was too large to ship and wasn't real happy with how un-sturdy it was. So I decided to chop it in half and came up with this for above my window at work.
I also had an idea of mounting them to a piece of trim board and letting them hang down as a valance or window topper. Kinda like what Kid did in her first book in the cottage room with the chippy trim pieces. Wish I had a pic of that.
