I think my prices will be low enough that dealers will be happy. But, it won't be a large sale, so I want everyone to have a fair chance at the best items, from the get go. I want them all to come back next year.

Betsy, wish you could come to the sale. It will be lots of fun. There are many little junk stores down the backroads. Lots to see in our area. We are centrally located to about seven old towns, with lots of "junk" stores.

im the same way kari....and im with the dealaer you mentioned completly.... ... no one gets in early for our big yardsale..... its part of the excitement....
we all have different rules...hey WE ARE THE BOSS OF OUR SALE... right?
as a buyer i would be impressed with your sale rules.... if i knew lots of dealers had been thru the night before i wouldnt be so excited to come.... thats how i hope my dealer customers feel about my big sale....still, in general i gladly give a wholesale discount to dealers if they are serious buyers... ....they are great customers.......we used to be almost all wholesale...i loved it back then...now there arent as many dealers out thre to sell to..

Here's the thing...I agree Ann -- dealers are what keep many vendors up & running.....and I really work to always take VERY GOOD CARE of them.....but, if I state "no early sales" and set hours for my sale -- I will honor those -- cause it is my business to do so. See, I have just as many dealers that follow the rules of the road -- and are great buyers, I won't offend those folks by allowing others to bend the rules -- just won't. I know one very big spending dealer in my area -- she once told me she went to a sale based upon items advertised and was told that a dealer had bought them before the sale opened. She took her deep pocket book and left -- and vowed she would not go back. Further -- she tells everyone she knows about this particular sale and their lack of business ethics. I certainly don't want to make that list.

I think occasional sales are different in that way -- if I was a business open every day, certainly I might offer to open early or later for a good customer. My Barn Sale opens just 4 days a year -- I want everyone to have the same chance at those 4 days. So...I do stand behind no early sales, or make them pay a premium to come in early.
Kari

i dont think adding the 15 % would placate me....most sellers have some thngs underpriced way more than 15%....so even with that i would have to figure the best stuff would be gone after the early bird presale... ...
i would gladly come early tho!!!lol...the second day not so much..
.i value dealer sales a LOT.... and wouldnt w ant to alienate them at all.... they can buy over and over...and might have uses for so much that i might want to be selling.... they are tops withme... i would probably give them 15% off not add 15 %%%%

Daisytoad, I'm like you in I love getting an early invite to a sale. I've received 2 recently to go the night, ond being a dealer going out of business and the other hasn't even advertised for a garage sale. I definitely agree, though, as a garage sale shopper, it's frustrating to get to sale when it opens and find that lots had already been sold.
She-ne, I think you are on the right track with the way you are setting up your sale. Too bad I live in South Central Texas or else I'd come to your sale.
As a cute aside, when I've had garage sales (I live just outside our town so it's a more country setting), I've found that when I don't want people to start shopping early, I let my dogs out and they bark and bark at the early birds in their cars which usually keeps them from getting out until I take the dogs back inside and start the sale! What's funny is that these dogs are a small poodle and Shih Tzu which would harm anyone but their bark is much BIGGER than their bite!

Meadowview, I forgot to mention. I love the idea of saying that we will let the early birds shop early, if they pay an additional 15%. This should stop them. Also, forgot to tell you that I love your blog.

Our sale is a little different from most, as it is just a way for me to get rid of the re-purposed junk that I do as a hobby. However, some of the participants do it more seriously.

Our sale will be small and more like an event with lots of frills. We decorate the property to a fault and hold an open house every year, by invitation only. We did a similar Holiday sale a couple years ago, during the open house. We sent invites to all the churches. Some of the churches, from the larger towns, brought groups by bus. It was wonderful.

So,we decided to add the sale to the open house, as a larger annual event. We don't know how to grow it. I guess what I am trying to ask is how to do a balancing act, as we don't want to overbill it and folks be disappointed. We want to price things below what they can find it locally at shops, but still make it cover our expenses.

We live "next door" to two gated, resort type, way out in the country communities, with about 3,000 homes. So, for the most part, our sale will be folks buying for personal use, and they want it ready to use.

Word is getting out that we are planning this sale. Last week,I had a gentleman call to ask that I send them an invite. We had not planned to do this one by invitation, but we are now considering it. It seems they feel it is more special, when it is by invitation only.

Just trying to get all our ducks in a row, so that the event will be memorable and not many changes will be necessary for future sales.

Due to all of your input, we have decided that there will be NO
pre-sales made. If dealers want to buy, they will have to buy a minimum to get a discount.

As a seller, I LOVE being invited in to a sale early..but as a shopper I rarely go to a sale that does this! Let her look though, Word of mouth prior to the sale on how great your stuff is-that's the best advertisement!Maybe offer her a 10% discount if she brings 10 friends to the sale!

i like no early sales and all the good advice about that...its just not fair and the customers will end up counting on your stated hours...
i dont like the early bird prices at shows at all...seems greedy and kind of unfair to the big bulk of the buyers who come at the regular time...it dilutes it imho......ive paid it tho...i guess if the woners of the shows can get it they will go for it..some big antique markets do it....

usually i go as low as i can and still make the money i want/need /can possibly make on the item..... we get tables and chairs like that for way under 100 at auctions..but thats in the old original condition that isnt that popular....
go low, thats how you get lots of fans and experience ...thats how you learn your market...
low but not silly low is my theory...

What I find difficult is when folks make up these half-hearted excuses for why they need to get into the sale early...and when I offer, "we could set up an appointment after the sale to stop by and see what is left" -- suddenly they are able to come the day of the sale. "good try" I think... On the other hand, how exciting that someone really is anxious to see what you have and shop! We just need to remember it is our sale and we set the rules.

I truly like to build a bit of excitement for my sales, make sure everyone feels they are on an equal footing -- and off we go.

I once remember going to a sale & being told a dealer had shopped it the night before -- I never went back. I have heard that same story from others too.

Keep those pushy folks at bay -- or as copper head stated, control how they will shop if they come in early (higher prices). You know that there is a premium folks pay to shop a flea market or even Junk Bonanza early --- why not? Offer an early bird price --- you can have it but for an additional 15%.

Thanks, Kari. I have a hard time dealing with "pushy" folks. But, I do want the good things left for the sale. So, I plan to tell her that to be fair to everyone, I will not sell anything until the day of the sale.

Pricing is an art. I try to offer a mix -- some really great deals (especially if I got a great deal on the item I can pass along) -- and some higher priced items (generally those are the items I really like -- and figure if someone likes them enough to pay that price -- great, if not, fine too). Remember, we gatherers are putting in our time, gas, clean up work, etc. And, even though we do this because we love it -- it is a business and pricing items to make a profit is part of the game. I always seek to at least double my money....

And, when I do a Barn Sale -- I stand quite firmly on NO early sales. There are dealers that will try to work their way in early (they are doing their job) -- but I just let them know that I want to be fair to everyone and that means the door opens on the first day of the show, not before.

price is so relative to area...it's very hard for any of us to give you suggestions...
it also depends for you..on what you have in them...money and time wise....
you have weigh money against how bad you want to get rid of them...

write down how much you would pay for them now...and then how much you paid for them. + paying yourself for your labor...and then go somewhere in the middle....
leaning towards a lower price if main goal is to turn them around...lean towards higher price if main goal is to make money and you can afford to sit on them a while if your price is too high...(and always remember to go higher than you really want, so they can 'deal' and feel like they got over on you...)

Since most of you are serious buyers and sellers, I need your help in pricing for my sale. I have a big table and six chairs. It has been "antiqued" and the seats of chair will be replaced with a current fabric. I have a lady trying to buy it, ahead of the sale.I think she is buying for resale, so I need to price accordingly. Also, I have a set of very heavy provincial chairs that have been shabbied. All look great. Tell me what you would expect to pay as a buyer and what they should sell for in a shop.

As you all can tell, this is my first "rodeo", and I need help. I am not trying to make a lot of money. I am doing this so I can continue my habit/hobby of junk collecting/re-purposing.

It can be seen on my blog, at the bottom of page
