I am surprised you noticed the weathervane. I had to dig up a picture for you. We picked up the weathervane someplace in Nebraska so time back. The wife had to have it. She says it keeps her heading in the right direction. If you want something really rare, we bought this Sellers cabinet from a auction for $311. It has the original good housekeeping recipes inside the doors. I was offered $200 for “just the recipes” before the sale was over. No one seemed to notice the recipes until I bought it. The guy who offered the $200 was off somewhere when I bought it. Sometimes… you just get lucky. The Sellers cabinet is in the back ground. Some of the other things you see are a $10 piano and a $1 tree trimmer. Not sure if they fit the “repurpose” theme of this message thread unless you consider decorations as a purpose. Rusty. No pedals. When the price came down to 15 dollars, I bought it. Then, I scoured the net for pictures of an idea for turning it into a planter. Nothing inspired. I decided to spray paint it a good, spring color. I bought the tinware coffee pot and tea pot and use the lids as hubcap. Had the little locker basket in my "stash". Drilled the tinware to the seat and the front fender of the trike and the basket to the back. Hung some green prisms from the handle bars. Now, I am looking for MORE old tricycles!!!!

The way I look at it is that you his customer (by renting space) and he should be working for you...promoting your goods and not his own. Couch was free--someone was going to take it to Goodwill and offered it to me as I was working at the shop one day. Chair was found on curb marked "FREE" at Route 60 yard sale two yrs ago..was in my garage with my other "inventory". Slipper chair was from our bedroom...I had "upholstered" it once and then changed the fabric to match the furniture in the new room. Desk, chandelier, corner clock, other wing back chair, small tables and antique hutch (future entertainment center for TV and Wii) bought or traded-out at antiques store. Plate hanger on wall was found on a dumpster dive. Whew! Strange that I can remember every single PLACE I found every single PIECE of my beloved "junk", but I can't remember where I put my keys or what time to pick up my son at the community college. Solution? Convert our never-used back deck into a room--if the price was right. It was. So, we hired a company (Mennonite/Amish workmen) to convert our 10' x 24' former-deck space into an office/den. We saved about five thousand dollars by going with a shed roof line instead of a peaked roof. I still had them vault the ceiling for a feeling of extra space. We opted for three arched windows for the back of the room. To compensate for the cost of the arched windows, we chose to use opaque, 24" octagonal windows for the sides of the room. We chose to install a small hotel heater instead or rerouting duct work and using our existing heat pump. All furniture came from the antiques store, where I work one day/week and have a booth. The couch, two wing back chairs, and slipper chair cost a total of 10 dollars as all pieces were either free or something we already had. Every furniture/decor item that WASN'T found on an obliging curb or next to a trash can was purchased/traded for at the antiques store. I hit clearance aisles of KMart and bought comforters in matching colors to cover the furniture. It took many days and lots of patience and re-starts, but I managed to reupholster (very unprofessionally) each furniture piece. We chose a patterned industrial carpet instead of laminate, hardwood or tile. I was shooting for a French Country look. I held my breath as I added touches to tie it all together. When I married, my parents gave us some of their overflow pieces. Like your antiques, mine come with many family memories or stories of how I found them with my children in tow years ago. I have an old ornate standing radio by our front door. The significance of it standing by the front door is that is where it stood when I was a child. I found a perfect mirror to place over it.

It was Thursday and my day to work at the antiques store. Shoppers came, saw, and conquered--mostly items under twenty dollars. Phooey! Mid-afternoon came, and I was "in my zone". I greeted. I located. I rang totals. I bagged. I well-wished. I was at the top of my game. And then SHE walked in. Blonde, mid-thirties, pleasant demeanor--this customer approached me with a puzzled look in her eyes. "Do you buy furniture from people, she inquired." I gave her the typical pat answer, "Maybe we do... and maybe we don't, Toots. Whatcha' got?" She explained. "Well, we have an antique couch that belonged to my mother. It hasn't been used too much, is sturdy, and we had it cleaned not too long ago. We have small children and it is no longer practical to keep it. It's in the back of our truck." I checked the store-status: only two customers. Yes, I could quickly take a peek at a couch I knowingly had zero booth-capacity for... and few funds with which to invest in what I imagined to be a broken-springed, horse hair contraption with decades worth of stains, termite damage, and dry rot. I was wrong. The couch was the softest shade of dove-gray . It's nail head pattern was scalloped. It had great lines and cabriolet legs. It was French Provincial all the way. It was then that the heavens opened I thought I heard the Hallelujah Chorus descending from the sky, "We don't want to sell this couch, we just want it to receive a good home. It is going to rain tonight and I can't bear the thought at leaving it at a Goodwill drop-off site." This glorious harbinger of charitable kindness did not realize to whom she was talking. My mind quickly went into hyper-drive. After a one second deduction, I asked her if she and her very sweet and philanthropic husband would mind delivering their heirloom about three miles away....to my house!!! I told them my kids were there, but because they are so used to articles of furniture appearing from the oddest places, they wouldn't think twice of their presence in our driveway. What's more, we are in the process of constructing a new room where our warped and weary back deck once stood. Being the resourceful...okay, totally cheap...individuals we are, we have avoided retail furnishings. The bulk of our investment went toward arched windows, vaulted ceilings, a small heating unit, commercial grade carpet, and recessed lighting. For months I had been collecting furniture from curbs. That is, when I wasn't horse-trading wares from the antiques store. Thus far, I have collected a free wingback, a ten dollar wingback, a 50 dollar desk, a 40 dollar clock, a 45 dollar chandelier, and the cou de gras--an 1860's cupboard (aka entertainment center). The free couch (once upholstered in a French Country check) will be the icing on the cake. And it's the one piece I didn't have to sleuth, scrounge, barter or buy. I would agree with what you said about washing the burlap (we used detergent with fabric softener) and washed it in cold water and that seemed to help it alot. We did it at the laundromat just to make sure we wouldn't ruin our dryer, theirs are probably more heavy duty. Diane, I did not have a problem with these burlap bags unraveling like I have with some store-bought burlap by the yard. They were very thick and tightly bound. Great tips about sewing the edges Marge! I asked the people at Joann Fabrics if they had any type of fabric sealer for fabrics that shed easily, but they weren't much help. Just make sure you start with a clean lint trap in the dryer and clean it a couple of times while drying your fabric. There will be A LOT of fuzz in the trap!! If you are using old burlap with graphics that you don't want to fade, but sure to wash in cold water. Since your pillow is already made, maybe you can remove the insert or hand wash it. Use a narrow zigzag for seams or sew 2 parallel seams about a quarter inch apart if using a straight stitch. Once the seam is sewn, raveling should not be such a problem, especially if your bag is lined. You do wonderful work --the real way-- on your chairs!! If I learned correctly, then I could SELL wingbacks in my booth! Good money!! I use staple guns on bench and chair seats and small material sections of backs of chairs. Pretty easy. But a complete furniture piece???...I just don't know enough. I have a friend at the store who makes her own piping out of fabric. She can slipcover small chairs. She sends the big stuff to an upholsterer. It does cost her a bundle, she says. Talk about pulling and tugging. I used so much glue to attach each section tightly to the chair...then I had to sit there and hold the glued section until the glue adhered with a strong bond. I "slipcover" (or is that gluecover) my front porch wicker cushions each year. I cut the fabric, sew it, then glue the back shut. I am totally impressed, Greta! I never would have thought to try that on a piece like that. I did learn the traditional upholstery method in a class several years ago, which involves completely removing the old fabric and replacing with new, with most sections being stapled on with a pneumatic (air compressor powered) stapler. Welting is usually applied by sewing the cording into strips of fabric, then stapling. Yes, some gluing is used for trim, etc. Also, tack strips are often used along the back section. I am NOT an expert by any means, but the man who taught the class was. All that to say, it's WAY more work (lots of pulling & tugging and physical hard work) to do a complete reupholster the traditional way. I think the hot glue is a FABULOUS idea!!! Worst case scenario, you can always remove all of it and recover or make a slipcover. I don't think I would ever have been able to learn to make fitted slipcovers had I not taken the upholstery class. Speaking of which, I finally finished a project for a friend and now I need to start on a chair I'm keeping for my own bedroom. Thanks for sharing, Greta! I would have had the same questions if I hadn't used hot glue like I have. I am sure there are others who saw the chair and had the exact thoughts you did. Most folks don't hot glue entire pieces of furniture!! ha ha All types of upholstery glue have limitations...even spray adhesive used on auto upholstery. Sometimes, when glue gets too warm, it softens and can pull away. It doesn't matter what surfaced it is adhered to: cloth, vinyl, hardboard, plastic, or wood. The glue can still lose its tack. Piping and welting are typically sewn into fabric--not glued. They do a lot of the support-work on a furniture piece. And then there are the tacks... But...it is a fact that all upholsterers do use glue. I did fudge when I bypassed the standard upholstery process. Knowing the chair was wonderfully upholstered to begin with, gave me the courage for my shenanigans. I knew something else: Four years ago, I upholstered a chair for my daughter's playhouse. I used a lower temperature glue gun and was not striving for any type of perfection. The chair was consignment shop fodder and cost very little. It was a petite wing-back; great for an 8' x 10' playhouse. The more I covered it, the more excited I became. It really did turn out beautifully...though haphazardly. I didn't expect any long-term results, though. The chair been my daughter's primary piece of play furniture for three years now. It has endured the intensely hot/humid summers of Kentucky and some pretty cold winters. It has been loved by my daughter and all the friends who have visited her in her "house". To the credit of hot glue, it has taken heat, cold, and frequent use and is still just as in-tact as the day I got the wild idea and glue-polstered it. I have used hot glue for many years when making trick or treat costumes and also costumes for the high school dramas I taught. I figured a "high heat" glue gun would do the trick for a chair. It did. The directions are really not difficult. I just simply cut my fabric slightly larger than the part of the chair I needed to cover. All wing backs... and other chairs... are upholstered in sections. 1) Place the fabric over the chair section you intend to cover 2) Stuff fabric into the chair creases of the part you are covering 3) Use pins to hold fabric in place (on straight places) 4) Mark with a fabric pen the places you need to cut 5) MAKE SURE you leave enough "overlap material" to prevent a shortage 6) Cut fabric 7) Glue it from top to bottom--keeping material taught. 8) ***Make sure you glue each piece very tightly to give it an upholstered verses "furniture cover" look. 9) Simply fold-under all fabric edges to give chair a finished look. McNaughton, I did use a coordinating fabric for the headrest, arm fronts, and bottom rim of the chair. I found the plaid napkins at Goodwill--believe it or not! :) Most fabrics would work. I would avoid an ultra-heavily stuffed comforter. The fiberfill would make it more difficult to retain the basic shape of the chair. You would need to pull some fiberfill out. I would also avoid fabric that is not "upholstery" or "bedding" grade. ***Remember, follow the lines of the chair as it was originally upholstered. You will find that chairs are always upholstered in sections...some smaller and some larger. ***I did not use any "cording" when upholstering. I glued right onto the cording and actually used it as a guide. Fold-under your fabric edges over cording for finished look. Finally, go for it! I am not super talented. Only super cheap. If I can do it, so can you. Don't forget the pictures!!! PS. Don't forget some Bandaids. I came away with a few blisters. Low and behold we saw that our soon-to-move neighbors left some curbside goodies. I stood guarding the loot while my son walked home and brought my car. The crushed velvet orange chair did not quite fit into my trunk so my son walked behind the car and protected it from demise as I slowly drove home. He was glad it was getting dark--even he, whom is seldom embarrassed-- has his limits! We brought home three end tables, two buffet lamps, one standing lamp, the chair, a porcelain lamp and a basket of "stuff". Since I asked my neighbors for their curbside castoffs--and confessed that I was the one who had been swiping their garbage before the garbage men got to it-- I felt relieved in the fact that they ARE moving. I don't necessarily want my secret identity revealed to the entire neighborhood!! ; ) Greta

They were absolutely nothing to write home about. These were from the depression and grandpa was poor. BUT it opened up the world of music for my son. The instruments served their purpose for grandpa. He had work in the bars during the depression. Then my son was able to very quickly learn how to play each one. I think he plays 20 or more instruments well. Those old instruments hold a place in his heart. Those instruments are totally worthless except to him. He is always reminded of sitting with grandpa and his dad learning some old practically forgotten tune. He is now a very gifted musician. My son managed a music store until recently - he also has a gift of determining the quality of an instrument - the owner loved letting him pick out what violin to buy for the shop. She played wonderfully. One day, after playing Three Blind Mice for me, she left the room. I played the song just as I had heard it. She discovered that I could play by ear. Grandma took me for early childhood lessons and was always encouraging about what she considered to be my gift. Besides sheet music and piano books, G-ma also left me an RCA Victrola--all original with huge horn. The best item Grandma left me was passed down through her family. Her family came to America at the turn of the 20th century from England. Her father was a butler to a wealthy Long Island family. They brought with them, an instrument called the bell harp or "Fairy Bells." I have contacted Christies/Sotheby's auction house about my instrument from the mid-late 19th century. Its container is the shape of a small coffin and it is a stringed instrument called, "The Fairy Bells." Sotheby's said it was too unique...not enough of them made to fulfill the laws of supply and demand. It is tuned and sounds like some kind of oriental dulcimer. This person has positive memories and wants "something" from the house for the sake of nostalgia. I wish I had better items than doors and a bottle of Neatsfoot oil. The claw foot tub was the most prized treasure that I saw. Another antiquer bought it for 300 dollars. It was in very good condition. I bet this family member will remember bathing in it. It is sweet that someone wants a part of a house that has brought them happiness in life. My grandparent's upstate New York home was once a four hundred acre dairy farm complete with ice house, multiple barns, stone walls, wells, etc. My uncle now owns it. It is on the historic registry of homes. Grandma divided family mementos according to what she thought would be special to each of us. I grew up such a tomboy...swimming, fishing, catching frogs, riding horses without any tack, neglecting personal hygiene (ha ha) and the like. I gave no childhood indication that I would be the family decorator, house nut, and antiques fanatic. I am surprised she didn't leave me one of the tractors... of which I spent many an hour riding the wheel fender while Grandpa hayed the fields. My sister...the sedate grandchild... inherited the antiques. I am happy for her. I have plenty of my own. She loves antiques, too. I WOULD like a brick from their foundation...something. Like a lot of people in the world, my grandparent's house still ranks as my favorite place down here on earth. Well, maybe after my house. No wonder I loved that Victorian.

It is both sweet and nostalgic. With both of the houses my husband, kids, and I have moved from...that song has come to my mind. Copper- The sewing machine base with treadle is truly pretty. My friend found out, though, that it was broken in certain places--but has great possibilities for yard art. The claw foot tub was purchased by another antiquer from town. It was an unusual tub, as it was five and a half feet--instead of the typical five feet in length. The sinks and the one gable (see above pic) looked as if they were being saved for someone. The bead board? I asked them to take it from the kitchen walls and keep it for a friend. They did it without complaint! I have the porcelain/ceramic door handles and and old porcelain light fixture. The tongue and groove flooring, which according to the workers was in good condition (the house had a newer roof--incredible!) was not spared. In truth, I wish I would have been more courageous. I could have used the bricks from the fireplaces, that gable that may or may not have been accounted for, and much more. I felt like I was pressing my luck--although the men were polite--in asking for what I did. I also felt as if I might be pressing the kindness of my husband, if I turned our garage into a salvage yard. Every week, en route to my daughter's ballet lesson, there it stood. I don't think I ever drove by without wondering about its forlorn state. There is something romantic and heart-wrenching about a once-beautiful home that has fallen into disrepair. This particular house reminds me of Mary and George Bailey's future home (from "It's A Wonderful Life") where they made their wishes and threw rocks through windows to see if they would eventually "lasso the moon". In the case of this landmark, its window panes bore the evidence of many of wish. I hope many of them came true. Last week, I happened to stumble upon my much-admired Victorian. Something was drastically different. When I drove by this time,the entire 2nd story had been razed. I panicked. I parked my car and carefully approached the demolition site. It didn't take long to discover century old treasure: fallen gingerbread gables; claw foot tub; porcelain sinks; ceramic/enamel door knobs; multiple fireplaces; crown mouldings; bead board walls; and tongue and groove flooring. It was enough to make any junker salivate. It was then that I spied a pile of salvaged doors. My heart skipped a beat. The next morning, I went back to the site. The demolition men were already working. I braced myself for courage and approached the workers. Long story short: I bought eight doors for next to nothing. I also bought the blue door with the transom window over it. (See pic. below.) I watched the workmen chainsaw-cut that blue door out what once was a kitchen. What had been there for well over a century was dismantled in minutes. I was also given things like antique tins, boxes and even an original paned window. Somehow, the starry-eyed dreamers of the town had missed this one--all of the panes were in tact. A friend of mine rescued the old cast iron sewing machine base. (see pic.) and a pantry closet. I am not quite sure what I am going to do with the doors. Right now I am in still basking in afterglow of my miraculous acquisition of them. I will still miss that old house.

At the end of the year, students tend to accumulate more than their vehicles will hold. My parents would have ASKED me about my microwave (or other things) they bought. If I would have said, "In a dumpster!" my number may have been up. We used my college microwave for the first fifteen years of our marriage. We used my dorm room carpet(not the pea green one..a different one) to cover the ugly brown floor of the bathroom in our first apartment. At twenty-three, I used a box cutter to "install" it. You can get them from hobby lobby. Just so you know...you can clean off what you don't like with rubbing alcohol and it is much cheaper than the cleaner. If you drop small amounts of rubbing alcohol over your design, it will make a whole new look. also, if you use small pieces of felt to apply the ink it gives it a cool look. I like to use my airbrush to blow the colors around too. I am not use you could use it on the counter top unless you really clear coat it afterwards, but not sure if it would wipe some of your color off or change the look. I have only used spray clear coat. I also like use put it on glass items such as vases. I apply it on the inside so It lasts longer.just squirts small amounts inside and roll it around and keep adding colors. It was pointed out to me, by the antique store manager, that I should not carry such items. They compete with his largely primitive items. I had no idea when buying those boxes that they would infringe upon someone else. This policy is not written, and what he said is confusing because it is very broad. The manager said we are to carry a vast amount of antiques. What confuses me, is that he sells, with the exception of furniture, almost all new items. I explained that 90% of my stuff comes from yard sales, consignment stores, antique stores, auctions, and dumpsters. I buy perhaps 10 percent of merchandise from a store...and don't profit much as these items function more as "eye candy" to draw customers into my booth. I had to point out that the thin gold tree (seen in my Christmas mania post) is not new and is made from aluminum. He pointed out that tree is also in competition with his "type" of items, but said it was fine when he found out that the tinsel tree is, indeed, vintage. Long story, but I wondered if anyone else has experienced similar circumstance. Some malls are strictly antiques. Ours isn't. I know policies are largely dependent on owners and managers.

I felt an urgent need to take home (rats!) my unsold Halloween merchandise (double rats), and decorate for Christmas. Being that this is my first booth--and that I have collected precious-little Christmas ephemera-- I felt the *M-A-N-I-A* kick-in. Friday, I found myself on a buying trip. My tour guide's antique treasure-trove knowledge took me to every warehouse and novelty shop between Lexington and Shelbyville, KY. It was an all day-er and late night-er. Saturday, I hit local yard sales (with aching feet, I might add). I am utterly amazed at the amount of yard sales still being held in NOVEMBER! It was at these sales that I hit pay dirt. Vintage Christmas items galore!!! Saturday night, with deeply-aching feet, glazed eyes, and sheer determination, I recorded, glued, wired, sewed, framed, and priced my items. My mania having ebbed, I fell into bed at three a.m. Yesterday afternoon, I dragged my festive wares over to my booth. I spent hours placing, arranging, and rearranging, my now LARGE collection of Christmasabilia. Thought I'd post some photos of my efforts!!

Another thing might be to mount horizontally flat on wall, hooks attached for a coat rack. One could also be the top for a sofa table/kitchen island (slots facing down) and the rest of the pieces could be used for the rest of the table. Also could be the start of a potting bench. Get a piece of wood and a hinge and attach it to the top slat so it can stand on its own better. Paint it cute. Then get wood letters from hobby lobby or where ever and paint them a cute contrasting colors in one word sayings such as Welcome. Attach the letters with wood glue or nails. I saw something in a magazine where they made a coffee table, it was adorable. They simply took the pallet, added 4 legs using post finials, painted the whole thing a bright color, and added a square piece of glass. They have a large tarp up so as to cover the Truck so no water will get into the fuel tank.. They had to take the bed of the truck off to get to what ever they are doing.. since they do not have a lift in my back yard..LOL Now getting ready to make some more salsa...Friend of mine went to farmers market and picked me up some more tomatoes.. they sure are nice ones.. wish I could have had some of my own.. oh well I got half bushel for $12.00 comes out to about 25 cents a pound.. and you sure can't beat that. so off to the stove with me.. catch you all later.. And was running a slight fever. I was afraid of appendix. But turned out to be gas and he finally had a GOOD bowel movement...But the poor thing got poked in both arms. I have not been to the one in town for a long time,, I need to go check it out. have two really close to me.. one in my town and one in two towns away.. which is about 5 miles from each other..we have a pretty good Goodwill in the little town next to mine and I usally go there on Saturday AM or Sunday AM as they give discounts then.. For $59 us crafty people could entertain ourselves for months! I just got back from Sally's. I scored a creamed color microfiber pillow. When I opened the zipper it said Pottery Barn w/ a down filler. $3.99. Then I found 8 square vintage doilies w/ lovely flowers. Could sew together to make shabby chic/romantic pillow covers. $4.99. Best of all, I found a red/white checked with bows vintage tablecloth in excellent condition. But it had no tags. There is a huge sign above the register that says they will not sell anything w/out a tag and don't even ask. I let the girl figure out that there was not tag and tried to look surpised. Then she said "how about $1.99?". SCORE! I must have about 30 vintage tableclothes. I don't know why I love them but I do. Gravy stains and all. (hint...hot water, two scoops of OxiClean, let soak overnight and hang in the sun. Stains gone!). I once picked up a beautiful vintage 50's tablecloth at a tag sale. I was walking around wondering who could smell that bad. Then I realized it was me. That tablecloth was in the garage and had critter pee on it. 'THE FROG' he is huge.. and he is just so cute.. I am going to take him to Lev's shop and I do not think she will have any trouble selling him.. and making a nice profit. the birdbath is nice also.. the planters need a little TLC but they will work.. I am trying to figure out how to make a hat for the NUTCRACKER that I won.. he is 30" tall and in very good shape. but missing his hat. all the ornies are in great shape and bright colors.. and the wreath is too.. so I just may add a new bow and some off the ornies to it.. and take it to Lev's too.. I won this shelf that the top comes up and you can add a book to it.. so I am taking that to Lev too, as I think it would be neat for her to place an address book on it and maybe her customers can sign in and she could have a use the names and address to have a raffel and put all the names in the hat and draw someone out to win.. also gives her a good customer information base.. she can keep track of what they buy and what they are interested in.. the rest of the shelf has three other shelfs and she can place some of her items on the shelf.. for display ..I went to a Krogers yesterday to pick up some fruit and they have these huge pumpkins sitting outside and they are asking $59.00 for each one.. funnly thing about them .. they are flat on one side.. LOL I would not spend $59.00 for one.. but who knows who would.. people fool ya.. And by the way.. we have chili at my house all the time.. Big Chile country here... you know with the Cincinnati style chile and the chile coneys.. and three ways.. The junkers on here have demonstrated so much talent for making them beautiful...I have only seen cloches displayed in one particular antiques store I used to frequently visit. Her were delicate and intricate, too. Here is one of my latest treasures. I have been admiring this picture for some time. A lady in our mall carries quite a lot of vintage pictures of children. To my absolute consternation, my husband and offspring are teasing me about my purchase. They don't like the child's breeches, collared shirt, or the rabbit's lengthy eyelashes. So, I ignored their snickers and guffaws and hung it anyway. Put a picture light over it and...wha la. It isn't exactly Louvre quality, but in all honesty, I never have been to crazy about the "Mona Lisa" or the "Whistler's Mother".

(Home Interior made them along with other companies) I have bought them in the past and discarded the rubber gasket thing and used them as cloches myself. They are heavy and I think way cool ! Those little ornate frames are really a shabby mustard yellow and rather heavy...like plaster. The vintage jewelry casket box is my favorite find of the day. I could have bought a ton of cool stuff in the old storage building but I kept thinking about all the mess in the garage that is in tubs. The mosquitos ran me in from the garage...down here they have teeth! All of today's finds will be on Etsy next week! Wonderful double vintage frame, embroidered pillowcases, blue wicker sewing box, 3 vintage hat stretchers, pair of ornate plaster frames and a glass jewelry casket. All of this is heading to my Etsy store...nothing stays here! I thought of using the hat stretchers for frames but really don't need them. Also picked up some small vintage sterling charms and an old hair comb. Tomorrow is 1/2 price at 1:00 and the storage building is still full of neat treasures but my garage can't stand anything else. Lots of wooden legs from old tables, ornate pieces of frames, bags of old metal do-dad embellishments, porcelain light fixture bases and lots more. Would love to see before and after pictures! Yes, my chandelier came with wiring. The wiring seemed relatively new...definitely not old or threatening. I really LOVED the way it looked on my front porch for the picture we took. If it does not sell (asking 40.00) I will buy new chain that makes it long enough to hang where it was in the picture, paint the chain to match the green color, and use it --without wiring it--on the porch. I can take out the bulbs and use candles. Wiring it is a possibility. Yes, I expect someone to use it in this manner. We have changed-out lots of lights. I just don't want to make a hole in my porch ceiling where no hole exists. Also, I could buy a swag lighting kit, drape it and use the plug on the front porch. That's an option, too. I really love light fixtures. I have a really nice mini-chandy that I purchased this summer at a yard sale for ten dollars. I want to paint it black and hang it in my bedroom. I dyed them with Tim Holz's Ranger Alcohol Inks. This product is GREAT! You can dye non porous surfaces. You don't have a lot of control but I like the surprise of what happens and if you don't like it--the cleaner takes it right off and you try again. Another bonus is that a little goes a long way. They sell them individually or in groups of complimentary colors. I bought most of mine from ebay but they are available many places. Now I haven't actually done anything with them..... The ones that have some gold on them were embossed with a rubber stamp and embossing powder. Leveata, this should work on glass-you can just experiment.

As I was pulling into the very long driveway, the homeowner was pulling out. I kindly mentioned the box of pool table items that I had forgotten to pick up the day before. He helped me pull the tarps back from a couple of tables and we found them. I handed him a dollar for the .75 box. He wanted to give me change back!? I said, no, please keep the change and let him know how grateful I was to be able to come back and make the purchase. My idea was to put the balls into some of my crib springs...as you can see...and dress them up a bit with number embellishments that coincide with the number on the ball. Ideally I would rather put them atop a regular mattress spring, but this is all I've got for now. Any ideas for embellishing these guys? Thanks! They go remove the remnants of other people's garage sales and usually have some great junk priced really cheap! I nearly fell over when I found the antique Royal Typewriter with all of its glass keys still intact. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the bright pink tag that read $2.00. Are you KIDDING ME? I put on my best poker face, nonchalantly picked the heavy sucker up, and placed in my "pile" area without skipping a beat. I said I hoped that it worked, been wanting one, etc - when inside I was SCREAMING! Also found a wooden letter J, a brass # 7 each for .50, lots of .25 items, an aqua insulator for $1, a vintage wooden drawer with lots of crackly pain (they had no idea how in THAT was) filled with jars and boxes of nails, screws, vintage glass knobs, brass handled door set from about 1950 still in the box - the whole drawer for .50. I found a cool flashlight/screwdriver in a leather pouch also for $1 - very vintage and never used. My new best friend I'm sure! Oh, BTW, the vintage square wood folding table was a steal at $1.

Not only are the prices no longer able to compete with yard sales, but in an economic recession, how do they expect to keep customers when their prices are now comparable with retail and specialty shops? Now, the prices are climbing higher for "lesser" items. Our antique mall items are priced more reasonably. I will stop lamenting. I did buy a few reasonable items. Also found some this past weekend... at a local flea market. Found: Primitive angel picture/ cottage-style floral portrait---I painted frame white/ chandelier I painted black (looking for 25 watt faux wax bulbs), oak shelf with silver racks/ vintage biscuit canisters with wooden tops/French soap dispenser and tumbler/three tin and glass door knob hangers/ pair of green embroidered pillow cases/ green embroidered dresser set/beautiful crystal bowl with silverplate rim/ plastic Indian corn, gourds, and pumpkins/white mail organizer with drawer/primitive bumble bee rag doll with dress and tulle wings. Finding items that you think (no way to be sure in this business) will sell has become very gratifying. I think I've been bit by the "thrill of the hunt" bug. I resisted buying half a dozen items that were wonderful but left me very little room for any profit margin. Rats! Learning the ins and outs of the resale business is somewhat challenging. I'd cover the holes that the clock face didn't cover with some cute craft paper (maybe on some cardboard for sturdiness), and paint the outside. (I paint everything. Drives my husband nuts.) I think I'd put it on a nightstand, and use the space inside the clock to store things like lotion and lip balm that don't look so nice left out.
