the main danger is that the paint wont stick..is it shiney now? if so beware...
. you might need a primer or kilz or light sanding.......
i would probably use an acrilic paint....my painter says its the best...
for kindof a casual look you mightlike a dry brush idea... get 2 close colors like antique white and country white...and use my drybrush technique ...its on our website..a good solid coat and then a dryrush coat with the other color........and do it on a BIG board to see if you like it first ....

I don't know how I missed this thread before, but my younger one is an animal gal who lives near a big city. She has rescued rabbits, geese, snakes, birds and more. Among her stories are the skunks who ate a piece of a dropped hot dog out of the folds of her sweat pant hems as she bike-rode the trash to the campground dumpster AND the squirrel she rescued and kept in the car when she was taking her SAT test. I kept repeating in wonder, "You were on your way to the SAT and you saw a squirrel at the side of the road..." How dull our lives would have been without her passion for animals! It doesn't take a redneck, or at least a traditional redneck!

Does your server allow links? I would be happy to send links to some of the stuff I have found. I could tell you about how many pictures are on a site when I send it or I could send some text. Do you have a lap top? We used to live in the country - just had dial up... Drag the lap top to a school parking lot and you can get free access... or some libraries or a coffee shop... There are ways...

Copperhead, I can't do pictures by email. Actually, I can, but I have to be very careful. I have Hughes satellite internet. If I visit too many blogs, download or view too many pictures in one day I will exceed my fair access policy. Which means they downgrade my speed for a 24 hour period, and I can't access anything. I never watch videos or visit Utube... Hughes is expensive and I really hate it, but I live in rural area and it is my only choice other than dial up. I can't do dial up.

You really know your machines... You have inspired me to dust the cobwebs off the others and play with them as well..

I don't know that I would say the old ones ALL work better than the new ones. I've seen some would be better turned into the tractors... Certain old ones are great when they are in proper working condition. Those old treadles are pretty cool, fun to use, pretty to look at, will give you somewhat of a work out and they will sew through a thick piece of fabric but they don't do what some of the new machines are capable. The top of the line Singer 401 and 403 do a LOT when working properly and have all the cool parts. They have metal gears not plastic. The needle sets forward - you can SEE what you are sewing - they also have a fantastic magnified light. They will go through a lot of fabric or sew sheer fabric. They have a lot of the same decorative or functional stitches you can get on the new machines. I can put the needle right exactly where I want it to go and stop it right exactly where I want it to stop - unlike my electronic machine that is setting in the box... They don't have a computer to go bad - I lost one to a lightening strike. You can get info on line to REPAIR them when you need to!!! You can get parts and manuals to repair them on line.

Make sure you always attend the preview before hand! All items are sold as is so if you are sitting in the back and something looks great, you might be in for a surprise after you win the bidding. Take it from me! I purchased a jogging stroller for my friend and and wheelbase was bent. Who can jog w/ a wobbly stroller. It should have been in the trash. I complained and didn't have to pay but that's rare.
Have a great time. You never know what you'll find.

I agree w/ you Diane about feeling obligated at tag sales but that ended quickly. Now I just say "nothing for me today - have a great day" and I'm off to the next one. My entire family wears our pirate shirts and pretend the tag sale list is our treasure map. You just never know!

Huggy, when my sister moved into this house all of the woodwork was oak---just too much wood for her so she painted her cabinets and used a glaze over them. I know I have better pictures somewhere but this is all I could find right now.... just make sure you lightly sand and use a primer so that your paint will stick to the varnish.

I looked at the numbers and decided that as well, but, the machine case is not rounded, it is squared off. I did explore that site... I don't know if it works or not. I don't think I tried it. I mainly bought it just because it was so cheap... When I got it home I fell in love with it.. One of the items on my TO DO list is play with my old machines....

Copperhead, you are always saying that the old machines work better than the newer ones. How old are you talking???? I am curious...

My eyes are emerald green with envy! LOL

Okay, let's think stategy here...I'd hit all of the older, more established neighborhoods first. The newer subdivisions are usually full of younger people and you're gonna find faded Little Tyke toys, etc. Drive a SUV or a pickup truck, of course. Take some heavy, durable gloves, perhaps a hammer and screwdrivers to dismantle parts off of something that you'd like, boxes and newspaper to wrap smalls in and of course, bungee cords.

If you start out earrrrly that morning, a flashlight of course. Wear durable soled shoes so that you don't step on a nail or metal, or something(?) LOL

Good luck - it sounds like so much fun.

Everybody chime in with your ideas.

Sewalot had some drawings looked like that machine - dig through their site.

I just use sewing machine oil on the surface and all. Wipe it off good. You want to be careful of the decals - machine oil is ok. I use an eye lash brush to clean gears and other fine detail places. There are sites that will tell you how to clean better than I can tell you. Try looking up sewing machine restoration.

Does the machine work??? When I get a "new" machine, I put a drop of oil on anything that moves or is suppose to move. I keep old rags handy. If it doesn't move, keep on oiling. I've had machines I thought were hopeless but just oiling helps a lot. If they are totally frozen, you can use kerosene painted liberally on to the moving parts. Keep a rag on hand - keep it off the decals. If all else fails after a few days of oiling, etc and it doesn't move, I use the hair dryer and get the parts warm. One of the web sites says to just turn the fly wheel real hard - says you can't hurt anything.... There was one I had oiled and oiled, my hubby threw it out of timing by cranking the flywheel HARD. It was the bobbin gears jammed up - I could see rust on the gears. I knew cranking it hard wouldn't work. The top gears turned but the bottom gears did not - scary. When I got home, I got an old belt to grip and tried to turn that bobbin gear from below. Then I tapped on it lightly with a small hammer. Went back to the belt, hammer, belt. Brute force from hubby. Got it eventually. Patience. There are repair manuals you can buy on line.

Yes, Copperhead, the bobbin is long. No letters on the machine, just the numbers. Since I already seached the web with no luck I think I may call the toll free number you suggested.

Jill, I'm afraid to clean it.. LOL.. The baby oil is a good idea. I may get up the guts to try that...

I love old sewing machines too. I purchased this one from an auction for a grand total of $2.00.

Thanks... I'll keep you posted and let you know what I find out...

An old guy at an auction told me to only use baby oil to clean up old machines as it won't take off the decals--that's all I have to offer--except that I love old sewing machines!

It's old... after 1900 they used letters in the serial numbers - there are sites that can tell you when it was made from the serial number - possibly Singer's site or sewalot. There are sites to tell you how to make it work if it doesn't. You might be able to get a manual. There are places to get parts and belts and bobbins. I used to have fits trying to fix things my self. Now I just look it up on line. I love the internet. The thing in the lower pic looks like the shuttle winder for the bobbin. Is the bobbin a real long thing?

"If you have a Singer sewing machine that you would like to find more info on, call Singer toll-free at 1-800-474-6437. If you provide them with the machine's serial number (which is usually stamped on the right side of the machine bed and often begins with one or two letters) they can provide you with the machine's model number and it's date of manufacture. Singer ... has copies of manuals available for $10 each (unfortunately, they are no longer free.)"
